I originally purchased this book for a business law class I took, but the information I learned from it helped me from preventing my employer at the time to get one over on me. Everybody should know the basics of business law, especially contract law, and this book provides that kind of valuable information in a way easy to retain.1. It's literally saved me from being screwed out of over $1000 dollars.2. It's slightly bigger than the average sized mouse-pad, so you can use it as a mouse-pad stand while surfing the internet from your couch.A saving grace from scumbag businessmen and a convenient mouse-pad stand, it should be in every single house.

Better than Expected!I am an attorney that had to take this class as part of a certificate in Finance. I was tested in areas that I have not studied in years or am not exposed to, e.g. HR, patents and trademarks, etc. Some areas are more detailed for a law student.This is an interesting book with plenty of examples, well organized, and I gave it 4 stars because it is probably more detailed than a general business student will need in the future.

Great quality book, and definitely the best price I could find. I was concerned that this textbook would be very dry and hard to understand, but they do a god job of explaining things to make them understandable, and then gradually building your knowledge of law. While this is not my favorite class subject, this book has prepared me well for my class and helped me earn a better grade.

I got the Kindle version after I already had a hardback version for a Business Law class. The hardback version was fine, but what I found in the Kindle version was that the number of missing passages, typos, and errors was very high.In one situation, one of the cases was actually missing! I was asked to read in class by my instructor, and had to borrow a book after a few minutes of struggling to understand what case he was talking about. I believe that was in chapter 9, but can't remember.In other cases the formatting is rendered useless, and if things are in an ordered numbered list, they are just jumbled together poorly.I just found in Chapter 10, several sentences that were cut off, and mashed together so incomprehensibly that I had to refer back to the paper version. I am sincerely grateful I have the paper version because there is no way I could have answered that take home test question with that passage because it doesn't make sense at all.It is still useful, for the most part, to take to class, but I would not rely on it for tests. The information is just all to often missing, or has typos that render it hard to understand.I'm actually very disappointed in this because I was going to buy all my textbooks in Kindle format if I could next quarter, but now I'm not so sure I should.

This book is great for people who have never taken any business law courses. This book is very informative and it helped me learn a lot about US business policies and legal issues. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to get knowledgeable about the law.

Great textbook, satisfied with purchase. I got this book for my Business Law college course. Thick textbook, 400+ pages. Content is solid and should go well with Business Law courses. It comes with many court cases and sample follow-up questions (answers in back) which are very helpful. The book also has a great index and separate legal definitions sections, which were great as well. Very satisfied with purchase.

Succinct but sloppy. Some mistakes; weird presentation of facts at times (probably doesn't want to get sued by another textbook that had a straightforward explanation, maybe.) I did not find it as helpful for women religious, nor was it a "workbook" type of text. All in all, the book is well written and documented with appropriate sources, but formation personnel in women's religious institutes might want to combine a study of this text with other articles on celibacy written primarily for women and/or by women religious.

Without apparent bias, this book emphasizes the practicalities of a celibate life, with guidance for those who choose it. While the focus is on religious celibates who have openly vowed to remain celibate, secular people who practice celibacy are mentioned in many of the discussions. The author argues persuasively that seminary education inadequately prepares priests for the challenges of celibate life; this argument could apply to secular education as well. That's a core distinction and serious problem featured in this book.The plot line in "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" is constructed on the stories of two black men of the "lower classes" in rural Mississippi. Lest the reader think that the judicial and law enforcement rush to judgement (one based on prejudice, racism, convenience, and expediency - all buttressed with bogus claims on the uniqueness of bite marks and assembly line quality, dry-lab, slipshod, negligent autopsies proffered by avaricious, egomaniacal snake oil salesmen, Drs. West and Hayne) is confined to benighted rural pockets of the Deep South, consider the famous case of Steven Avery, a white man from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Avery served 18 years in prison on a wrongful conviction for sexual assault and attempted murder. He was fully exonerated by DNA evidence, as was also (eventually) the case for the men featured in this book. Seeking restitution (if that's even possible), Avery took legal action against the county. Not to be outdone, law enforcement pulled a Trump and counter-attacked: in 2005, Avery was arrested on charges of murdering a local photographer and was convicted in 2007. It was a frame-up relying in large part on pseudo-scienc, just like the multiple false convictions in Mississippi and elsewhere. Take it as a given that the Great Panjandrum propelling the cases in "Cadaver King" (the distinguished Mr. Hood) has yet to acknowledge either his own perfidy and his manifest and deliberate ignorance of his responsibilities as an attorney general (and he's a Democrat!)What Balko/Carrington and Ricciardi/Demos and many, many others convincingly convey is that this is a "world gone wrong". The fact that no meaningful changes have occurred despite intense publicity conveys the fact that those who write the laws and those that enforce them don't care about the perversions of justice they perpetuate, nor do they seemingly grasp that the two-tiered judicial system (you get the best justice your money can buy) is untenable. That conclusion is made explicit in the book and in Balko's many columns in "The Washington Post". He and other investigative journalists, concerned lawyers (there are a few) and a few "folks" are fighting a quixotic battle against "people bending broken rules" (Bob Dylan's phrase). Even the recent involvement of the formidable Koch organization in sentencing reform has hit the impenetrable Van Allen Belt of highly energized, reactionary, corporatist and fear-fueled populist opposition.The Balko/Carrington book is very well written and comprehensively referenced, especially as the Charlatan Kings are extremely litigious. So, every claim must be (and has been) carefully researched and referenced. The glaring problem with the book is the absence of an index. A bit more could be offered on the dubious legal background (e.g., the Frye decision) that allows introduction of non-science nonsense as alleged fact. As noted by the authors, leaving this decision to the judicial system (current practice) begs for the type of abuse detailed in this book and assures its continuation into the indefinite future. In other words, many more innocents will be incarcerated and many more "game over" decisions will be made by the ossified and self-important judicial mandarin "deciders". In short, many falsely convicted citizens will rot in jail because that's the system.As it happens, the constellation of forces favoring swift, "certain", retributive punishment is in ascendance. Efforts by Balko and company appeal to the converted: can you imagine enough open minded legislators and members of the legal/judicial/enforcment professions taking on a system that so many of them profit from? Unlike the legions of falsely convicted and later redeemed heroes of 19th century novels, swashbuckling crusaders for justice aren't on the near horizon. It will take a case of a truly monstrous nature suffered by a popular "People Magazine" cover star (Jay-Z?) to focus public attention on the problem. This book was mentioned by a long time friend and mentor over the course of a meeting. Right there, I pulled out my iPhone and launched my Amazon app and ordered it. It arrived the next day at about 11:00am. I couldn't put it down... once the day interruptions subsided, I finish it by 2:00am... then I couldn't sleep... I was as excited as a kid in a candy store.If you love the Thousand and One Night, and stories of ancient Arabia and their famous mathematicians, this gem will transport you back to those times.HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

I read this book as a kid, maybe a teenager, growing up in Brazil. I'm 47 now and I never forgot this book. I have fond memories of it. This is not just an amazing book to read just for fun, but it really shows you the beauty of math. I was always a bad math student, but this book made me at least be fascinated by it. None of my teachers at the time were able to show me the value and magic of mathematics. I think this book deserves to be included in elementary and middle school curriculums, not only in math but also in literature. It is a delight to read and a most valuable contribution to making math something fun, alive, deeply human, and important (not in a scary and forceful way) to everyone's life. If you have kids in school, I highly recommend this book. If you like math also, you should read it just for fun. I haven't yet read the English version, but I'm sure it is just as good. I just bought this book for my kids, one of which is in 3rd grade. The other is still a preschooler, but he'll enjoy it too one day. If your kid can't see the point of studying math, you MUST get this book and convince him/her to read it!

I purchased this little marvel years ago. since then Amazon has served me well and often -- but never better than with this outstanding book. if you have children or grandchildren of age nine up -- or if you yourself are not too old to be charmed by brilliant adventures in (seemingly!) simple arithmetic, please do give The Man Who Counted a chance.

I would say this book is for a adults or older kids already really "into" math. I was looking for a way to make math interesting (and my kid loves reading). It was hard to follow and very dense with terminology. For the right person the book is most likely deserving of the numerous 4 or 5 star ratings. Think twice before buying it for a kid who does not love and understand the subject already.

This book was extremely important to me growing up in Brazil. It was my introduction to the fascinations of Mathematics and also, believe it or not, the beauty of Islamic culture. I was glad to see that it exists in English, though disappointed that they haven't translated the footnotes or appendixes. The quality of the translation is uneven, but readable. I'm sorry, but you will have to learn Portuguese to read it in all its glory. For now, this will do.

This is a wonderful book in many ways, but I am sorry to have to report that it is NOT a translation of the complete Portuguese original. It lack both the entire "Preface" that appears in Portuguese and a number of footnotes by the pseudonymous author that deepen, enrich, and render more complex and beautiful this collection of tales. The translation mentions that Malba Tahan is a fictional author and that the true author is a Brazilian mathematician, but it does NOT identify the Brazilian mathematician who is the true author.

This is Arabian Nights with mathematics. It's a beautiful story, beautifully written. Lots of mathematics embedded in an interesting way. This story is great bedtime reading for my son, yet it's instructive (though not as instructive as the Number Devil).It's interesting to contrast this with Fractals, Googols and other Mathematical Tales by Pappas. which I bought at the same time. It's got more information in it, but not written well and therefore is not compelling.It's amazing that this book, which feels so in tune with the Islamic world, was actually written by a Brazillian mathematician!

The Man Who Counted is a worthy peer, with its series of mathematical dramas and engaging story of Beremiz's journey to Baghdad. Along the way, we see Beremiz do far more than merely count, as he settles disputes and makes brilliant observations, all by applying classical mathematical concepts. Beremiz is a wonderful man, not simply because of his math skills, but also because of his true character, and the book finishes with a very pleasing ending as Beremiz receives a just reward for his good works.

After watching the series Ice Road Trucking I didnt like Hugh that much. I did not like his attitude he carries on the show. And being a truck driver myself I understand the industry, so I thought.After reading the way Hugh was raised and the work attitude that his dad taught him, I have come away with a different opinion of Hugh. When I look at the world today as a whole, I see that the young adults have not been taught to WORK. They fell the government owes them everything. But under Hugh rough character he tells stories that helped to make him a man. How he learned at a very young age how to make money and work with his own hands.I liked reading this book. I learned many things about trucking in Northern Canada and how if I was to truck up there I would have a hard time because I dont know what to do or how to survive the bitter cold. The people are amazing up there.I would recommend it to anyone if they are looking for something different to read.

It was a quick read I read it in 3 days.different from Alex debogorski's book.a good read,fleshed out the story further.from just what was seen on ice road truckers t.v. show.mainly was about his work.which is his life & livelihood.if you was a fan of the show.I believe it's worth a read.

OH WOW!! This book is amazing. An absolutely wonderful informative story about the ice roads in NW Canada and the Ice Road Truckers. I have to admit I did not particularly like Polar Bear on the show, but I now have a new respect and love for him. It takes very special people to do their work in cruel climates. They are real men. Also, an entirely interesting documentary could be made on the building of the ice roads. I have to mention that my primary physicians brother, who is from India, works on the new bridge crossing the MacKenzie River. I live in Maryland on the east coast of the U.S. And I do not believe that the Ice Roads will ever be forgotten. I feel like it is a part of history for the entire world. Thank you Hugh!!!

This book is not what you might expect, i.e., endless folksy yarns of life on the road. It is actually very informative and thoughtful, and presents both a life and philosophy quite different from the norm. Hugh Rowland is an unapologetic hard worker who came from nothing, overcame many obstacles, successfully raised three daughters and stayed faithfully married to a high school sweetheart for over 30 years. He's partly the tough son of a bitch shown on IRT, but also very intelligent and cautious. He saves time and makes money by attention to details and thinking ahead. Those that don't, he observes, either fail and quit, or die on the ice road.The book is thoroughly entertaining. I read it almost at one sitting.

Ride with the Polar Bear, Hugh Roland as he tell his story about the ice roads. Hugh tells how he grew up learning to drive trucks, cats and other equipment in Canada. He talks about the dangers of making a trail where there are no trails, breaking ground and forging through the brush to make iceroads where there are none. He talks about fights and the rough and tumble men of the diamond mines, the long hours in the sub zero tempuratures, and the dangers of riding on thin ice.

Purchased for a school library grades 7-12. Strong interest for the boys who drive, or want to drive, trucks. Comfortable reading for anyone, each chapter has exciting problems, writer is an honorable family man, a piece of history which is vanishing due to the climate warming, written after the television show produced and has some notes about the difficult filming process. You feel like you are riding along with the writer over the years he has driven the ice roads.

If you know Hugh this book just expands what you already knew. It's an interesting read I felt.

This book gives a different view of life on the ice road. It is very informative. I was quite amazed at the requirements before you can drive on the ice road. It also gives a different view of Hugh Rowland to the man we see on television.

About the Author

Robin West is Frederick Haas Professor of Law and Philosophy at the Georgetown University Law Center and Faculty Director of the Georgetown Center for Law and Humanities, where she has taught since 1986. She previously taught at the University of Maryland School of Law from 1986-1991 and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law from 1982-1985, and served as Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School and Chicago Law School. She has written extensively on gender issues and feminist legal theory, constitutional law and theory, jurisprudence, legal philosophy, and law and humanities. Justin Murray is an appellate attorney at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. After receiving his J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as president of the pro-life student group Progressive Alliance for Life, he worked as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. District Court of Maryland. He has written articles on the constitutional status of the right to abortion, the intersection of legal ethics and racial justice, and criminal procedure. Meredith Esser is a litigation associate at Arnold & Porter LLP. She received her J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center, where she served as president of Law Students for Reproductive Justice and represented indigent clients in the District of Columbia as part of the Law Students in Court Legal Clinic. Upon graduation, she clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
