i found this book very disappointing. At the very least, a full 25% of the book is devoted to the index. A large portion of the book provides only very general information such as soil structure, simple water delivery systems, fertilization, growing in raised beds, and California weather. If you live in So CA, you probably already know about June Gloom and the Santa Ana winds. I was hoping for a month to month guide of suggested planting, culture, specific tasks for each month, harvesting, etc. The only hint of this is a two page chart in the back of the book, the same ones I've gotten for free from Burpee ("Planting Guide for Southern CA") or Ferry Morse ("Planting Guide for Southwest"). An example from the month of October: "Continue to succession sow quick-maturing crops for a continuing harvest, but give heat-sensitive plants some afternoon shade and do not let them dry out" Duh. Not very specific. And word for word "Sow and Plant" paragraph from the month before.PROS:-about 25% of the book is devoted to the culture of specific crops, although presented entirely separate from the month to month guide.. This section has some potential, although it is anything but comprehensive. Is it possible that there is no mention of spinach at all? Not even in the two page planting guide. But there is a section on agretti, if that is on your list of must have crops...Additionally, nowhere are there suggested varieties that would perform well here in So CA.

Great for beginner gardeners.

Helpful and informative information for my growing region. Easy to use, tabs are a nice addition.

I took a chance on this one, since the title says it's for southern california, and I live in Tennessee. However, I quickly found out it is great information for any part of the country. This book is everything I've been wanting in a vegetable gardening book. I've needed one that tells me in simple terms what to do BY MONTH in order to get the most out of my garden. I'm one of those people who needs a lot of help, as I'm just getting started in raising my own food, and I was feeling overwhelmed by all the book choices, all the things to know to do and not do. For me, this is just the perfect, go-to book that lays things out simply, but with no shortage of information and help. The woman knows her stuff.. I feel sure this book will be dogeared and underlined into unrecognizable shape in a year or two. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

As expected

this was a gift so I don't know about it

This is such a great reference! Gardening in Los Angeles is so idiosyncratic, we really need our own guide and I refer to mine constantly! Highly recommended!

Truthfully, I was a little taken aback at the beginning, as the ideas seemed so strange at first, I had to tell myself to hold my horses and wait with the judgment to the end. I promised to myself that no matter what I will read this book cover to cover.Firstly, I saw only differences between me and the author - different attitude towards alcohol, different problem, different home situation... I happened to live in UK for many years and I know several people with exactly the same problem as this guy. But not me. I was different. And then, somewhere in the middle of the book, I couldn't lie to myself anymore. I had to admit that alcohol was in fact a poison and that it was a highly addictive one, too. No matter what you do, you get addicted to it eventually. It can take years or decades, but if you persist and regularly consume alcohol, it will be more and more difficult to quit. When faced with those facts, I knew I had no other choice but to quit it, which I did. I followed the steps in the book and haven't touched the alc for 2 months now. But more importantly I do not feel the sense of deprivation at all. Instead, I feel that I have finally given myself the freedom that I always deserved - the freedom to wake up with hangover-free mind. The freedom to feel ok when driving to the parties. The freedom to speak when everyone at the party no longer can and finally the freedom to put into my body what truly nourishes it and not a posion.Do I recommend this book? Sure thing. But it will not be easy to face the facts. One last remark - if you decide to purchase it, I suggest you read it cover to cover, no matter what.Edit: it's now 2019 and I'm still off alcohol. I've managed to continue my social life quite well, don't feel socially excluded at all. In fact I enjoy the parties even more now that I'm conscious all the way through ;)

I came across this book by reading another post regarding a completely different subject. The original post described a woman's life getting back on track after she quit drinking using Craig Beck's method. I don't classify myself as a typical alcoholic, but I was tired of the fact that I was a slave to my 2 glasses of wine a night for the last 8 years. Even though it's not considered a lot of alcohol I was completely unable to stop, therefore an 'alcoholic'. After reading this book I had a complete shift of how I looked at alcohol. I have always considered alcohol as comforting, something I relied on to 'decompress' in the evening. I have since learned by reading this book that alcohol is and was anything but a comfort or reliable. Deep down I always knew what I was doing was not good and it wasn't going to get better with time, but now I am extremely thankful that I have a chance - pure hope - that I can live without alcohol. If you are struggling, read this book and allow this method to permeate your thinking towards drinking. Knowing you have been suckered, and HOW you were suckered, gives you the ability to defend yourself just enough to escape the trap!

I would like to give my highest possible recommendation! The book has had a profound effect on my personal relationship with alcohol. I intentionally waited a couple of months to write this recommendation in an effort to validate his approach to quit drinking without using the concept known as will power. After reviewing the book several times, I have been able to generate my own interpretation about this crisis and his methodology. One of the most common questions that Craig receives is, “Do I have a drinking problem”? After considerable thought, I believe this question is completely off target. In my opinion, the term “problem” is much too general and nebulous. In some cases, it’s interpreted as something more extreme in nature. In my opinion, the real question should be, ”Is alcohol negatively affecting the quality of my life in any way”? As one of many possible examples, why do people consider waking up with a hangover and ruining the entire next day not to be negatively affecting the quality of their life? The hangover is a part of any drinkers’ reality whether they have been drinking for one month or thirty years. In summary, this book will definitely provide you with a new way of thinking about this socially acceptable powerful DRUG that has ruined and will continue to ruin millions of lives every single year. I personally believe that alcohol is one of the biggest marketing scams that western society has allowed to be executed over and over again!

I believe that when one is ready to learn a lesson, the "teacher" will appear. This was the book that "flipped the switch" for me with alcohol. I made a decision to stop drinking in April (not for the first time) and found this book soon after. It was a complete mind-shift for me. As I read it I found myself thinking that I would never allow another person to do to me what alcohol has done. This time quitting felt completely different as I now viewed alcohol as my enemy. There was no feeling of deprivation, and no temptation. Yes, it took a few weeks to get the "habit" redirected at the cocktail hour as I learned to do different things during that time span each evening, but there was no white-knuckled resistance involved. Since April I have been around others who drank (including on my own birthday) and it didn't bother me at all. That said, I've given up a lot since I quit drinking: I gave up disrupted sleep, I gave up mood swings, I gave up lethargy, I gave up spending money on alcohol, and I gave up a habit that brought nothing good into my life. Maybe this book will be the one to do it for you, maybe not, but give it a try and good luck to you!UPDATE: It is August 1, 2018 and I am still alcohol free (fifteen months now). The holidays posed no problem and no temptation to drink. I have recommended this book to two other people and they both gave up alcohol after reading it. I am grateful to Mr. Beck.

Benefit:The Kindle version is more portable by far than the printed version. However:After encountering a number of paragraphs that seemed wrong, I began comparing it with my printed version and found a number of typos and mistakes. To give just one example, "...Gothic fleets passed through the undefined Bosphorus...". The correct phrase is "undefended" Bosphorus. This type of mistake is typical of the others. In how many places do you suppose the text is garbled like this?A portable version is worthless if it is not accurate.Update:In the same paragraph Severus is described as having a "just auspicion that...". Suspicion. The word is suspicion. The Kindle version is too corrupt to put any faith in.

The merit of Gibbon's masterpiece needs no defense. Readers are, I assume, looking for remarks about whether this Everyman set is a quality edition. Well, this is it. I looked at the Folio Society edition: lovely, yes; but fragile and grossly overpriced. The Everyman is sturdily bound with solid boards and paper. The typeface is clean. A handy bookmark is bound into each volume. It's nice to hold in the hand. The text is the standard one of 1910, with notes to catch major errors of fact; there are good, more recent introductions (to vols 1 and 4) by the eminent Hugh Trevor-Roper (does that man know everything, or what?). ALL of the original footnotes are here, and readers of Gibbon should consider them as essential. Someone once quipped that Gibbon lived out his sex life in footnotes; there's some truth in that remark.Reading Gibbon is a landmark achievement in a person's life. Spend it with the quality production of this Everyman set.

I will append a single proviso to my five-star rating: to enjoy this book, you will need a somewhat decent command of the English language and the capacity to unpack dense meaning. Gibbon's prose, to my mind, is almost without par; however, it is very much written in the Enlightenment style, which was more complex than what we accustomed to from today's workman-like scribblers. Therefore, if you dislike long, complicated sentences, it's probable that you won't enjoy this work. Also if you're a teenager, I might suggest you perhaps start with someone like Will Durant, who has a nice style of his own, but is much easier for the youngsters to comprehend. Unless you're a whizz kid, then by all means jump on this immediately.Perhaps a representative passage will get my point across:"Of the various forms of government which have prevailed in the world, an hereditary monarchy presents the fairest scope for ridicule. Is it possible to relate without an indignant smile, that, on the father’s decease, the property of a nation, like that of a drove of oxen, descends to his infant son, as yet unknown to mankind and to himself, and that the bravest warriors and the wisest statesmen, relinquishing their natural right to empire, approach the royal cradle with bended knees and protestations of inviolable fidelity? Satire and declamation may paint these obvious topics in the most dazzling colours, but our more serious thoughts will respect a useful prejudice, that establishes a rule of succession, independent of the passions of mankind; and we shall cheerfully acquiesce in any expedient which deprives the multitude of the dangerous, and indeed the ideal, power of giving themselves a master. In the cool shade of retirement, we may easily devise imaginary forms of government, in which the sceptre shall be constantly bestowed on the most worthy by the free and incorrupt suffrage of the whole community. Experience overturns these airy fabrics, and teaches us that in a large society the election of a monarch can never devolve to the wisest or to the most numerous part of the people. The army is the only order of men sufficiently united to concur in the same sentiments, and powerful enough to impose them on the rest of their fellow-citizens; but the temper of soldiers, habituated at once to violence and to slavery, renders them very unfit guardians of a legal or even a civil constitution. Justice, humanity, or political wisdom, are qualities they are too little acquainted with in themselves to appreciate them in others. Valour will acquire their esteem, and liberality will purchase their suffrage; but the first of these merits is often lodged in the most savage breasts; the latter can only exert itself at the expense of the public; and both may be turned against the possessor of the throne by the ambition of a rival. The superior prerogative of birth, when it has obtained the sanction of time and popular opinion, is the plainest and least invidious of all distinctions among mankind. The acknowledged right extinguishes the hopes of faction, and the conscious security disarms the cruelty of the monarch."If you were able to read those three paragraphs without much trouble, and understood exactly what he was saying, then you should be to digest this work. Pay attention to the style, too. Do you like those long sentences, the vivid imagery of the wordplay? Some people do not. If you are one of those people, you will not make it through this work (it is almost 4,000 pages). Some people call it florid. I don't agree. I love Gibbon's style, and was disappointed after finishing the sixth volume that I had no more to read. Not to worry, though, as it holds up exceedingly well to repeat reading (usually I just return to read a chapter here, or there, on whatever topic I am interested in at the moment). Also pay attention to not just the style of the above three paragraphs, but the viewpoint Gibbon was expressing. Keep in mind, Gibbon wrote in the 1700s. His viewpoint is hardly postmodern, and he is a particularly stern judge in almost all respects: of history, of character, of society. That said, his book remains remarkably (but not entirely) free of racial bigotry. You only need to look up some of Immanuel Kant's quotes to realise that how exceptional this is for the period when Gibbon wrote. Be assured, however, that you may not agree with many of Gibbon's opinions. If you can't suspend your judgement when you read, if you only like to read authors whose you sociopolitical views you share, then you may not be able to stick this one out. My suggestion would be to try, however. On to the actual material Gibbon covers. If you're looking for any material on Rome under the Kings, Republican Rome, or the early Empire, then you've come to the wrong place. Gibbon does provide us with a brief, single-chapter account of the Empire and its Emperors from Augustus to Domitian, and two opening chapters on the age of the Antonines (which Gibbon and most scholars consider to have been the peak of the Empire in almost every respect). The real narrative, however, picks up with the death of Marcus Aurelius and the accession to sole rule of his son, Commodus, in 180AD. If you don't know much Roman history, and these names are still familiar to you, perhaps you've seen Gladiator? Marcus Aurelius is the old Emperor whom Russell Crowe serves at the beginning. Commodus is the Joaquin Phoenix character. That film wasn't really based on any true story, but these definitely were father and son in real life, and incidentally Commodus really did things like fight as a gladiator. Some of the stories Gibbon tells are quite amusing. We hear that Commodus had special arrows made, whose tips were shaped like crescent moons. He could, apparently, decapitate a sprinting ostrich by firing one of these from his bow. Commodus thought nothing of killing a lion in single combat. An elephant too. All in the arena, as his subjects watched. Some stories about other Emperors are clearly far-fetched:we are told the Emperor Maximin (known to us as Maximinus Thrax) was over 8 feet tall, could drink 7 gallons of wine and eat between 30-40 pounds of meat in a day, could break a horse's leg with a punch, and crumble stones in his fists. However, Gibbon is a sober historian. He never falls for a tall tale. If he tells one, it is for amusement or colour. He always provides his sources, and he is an astute judge of a source's quality. Gibbon always, if possible, practices what he calls "ascending to the font," by which he means never settling for a secondary source if a primary source is available. All these traits made him remarkable as a historian for his period.Volume I takes the reader until the triumph of Constantine the Great over his rivals in the early 4th Century AD. It then concludes with the first of what were considered the most controversial chapters of the book. Volume II begins with the second. These "controversial" chapters (15 & 16) dealt with the origin of Christianity, and its character and evolution in the roughly three centuries until Constantine founded Constantinople as a new, Christian Rome (Constantine actually called it Nova Roma, but the people were having none of that). Now chapters 15 & 16 caused quite the stir in Gibbon's day. You can go and read on Wikipedia about the accusations made against Gibbon because of what the chapters contained. Honestly, though, for the twenty-first century, they are extremely tame. It is to Gibbon's credit, however, that throughout the book when he does dedicate chapters entirely to religion, he at least in most cases avoids inflicting terminal boredom on the reader.Volume II takes the reader until the first part of Theodosius the Great's career. Volume III shoots just past the end of the Empire in the West, ending with a chapter on some of the barbarians who came to exercise sovereignty in the former Imperial lands. Volume IV covers Justinian and his immediate successors, still ruling as the Roman Empire in the East, and in the West continues covering the Barbarian successor kingdoms. The scheme of the work changes a little when the reader arrives at Volumes V and VI. Gibbon did not put much stock in the so-called Byzantine empire. In the final chapter of Volume IV he in fact covers 800 years of Byzantine empires, whereas he had just spent four volumes covering about half that amount of time. So if you were hoping for an extremely in-depth coverage of the Byzantine Empire, you'll be sorely disappointed, as I initially was (if this is the case, I suggest you look to the excellent works of John Julius Norwich). Instead, in Volumes V and VI, Gibbon covers the histories of the nations erected on the ruins of the West Roman Empire, along with those territories lost to enemies in the East. This takes the reader through a varied journey: the Caliphates; the Turkish Sultanates; the Crusades and Crusader Kingdoms; the exploits of the Normans in France, Italy, and elsewhere; the Bulgarians; the Hungarians; Russia; the Papacy; the Italian states; and more. All said and done, the complete work took me about 15 months to read. I took my time, reading about half an hour per day. Some days I'd read an hour, some days only ten minutes. I made sure to read it every day, however. Take your time. Get into a habit of reading this, one bite-sized chunk at a time. You'll be glad you did.

this is the second time I have read this amazing history. This time, however, I have read it in tandem with the Cambridge Medieval History and lots of Wikipedia links. The thing that impresses me is how accurate Gibbon was 200 years ago and Bury, even with his updates, 100 years ago. If you want to understand the basis of much of our Constitution (freedom of religion, right to bear arms, right to a speedy trial, etc etc) these are good for thought. Both books also give a longterm perspective that one might otherwise not have regarding governments, and the reasons civilizations collapse, and how we all got to where we are today. Not easy reading, but important for people who really want to know "stuff."

Bought this with Federal Law by Nolo books - very redundant and now I can't return - apparently not returnable, which I didn't know. If you are thinking of buying the two books I would recommend the Federal Law one over this and save yourself some money by not buying two of them.

Good information. I learned alot about the law that helped me get what I needed for my case. Great read

Good desk reference book

I ordered this book as reference for my managers and it is a handy tool when you need to find the right language for the right scenario. Reasonable cost and easy to table of contents.

Could be written better. References to regulations and laws are not as clearly defined as I hoped.

Helps

Employment Law makes no claims it cannot fulfill, it says on the cover it's a "desk reference" and that's exactly what it is. It's meant to be used as a reference not to replace general counsel. The book is arranged like an encyclopedia in alpha order by the term. Once you find your term then the book offers a definition, case study in some cases and cross reference of related terms.Nolo has always been a name I trust when it comes to legal issues. Even their website has helped me with personal issues where clarity was needed. When I first saw the book on Amazon; I made the mistake of overlooking the phrase "Desk Reference". I didn't expect the book to list HR terms and give definitions, but that is exactly what it is nothing more.As an HR professional I think this book is great for the novice, as well as the seasoned HR professional in need of a quick definition or an explanation of terms. Knowing the terms are great but to use them correctly along with company policies and procedure is needed as well. I respect the fact that under the more complicated terms there's footnotes which offer the reader a tad bit more detail.Whether you're trying to understand COBRA or what is meant by a "class action suit" it's here. My personal disclaimer is I think this book should be used for what it was intended; a desk reference and not to replace or even be used until your internal counsel arrives.A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Amazon Vine for the purpose of this review.MissyReaders Paradise3 book marks

I've used several NOLO books and have found them to be consistently useful, informative and well researched. Generally, these NOLO resource books are helpful both to laypersons and lawyers. The Employment Law: The Essential HR Desk Reference seems to target HR professionals more than lawyers. The Desk Reference isn't arranged according to topic but instead covers main concepts and terms in alphabetical order. The terms are covered carefully and with some of the most recent case law to give the reader/user a fuller understanding of each topic. But the HR Desk Reference should be used for a better understanding of the concepts and recent jurisprudence and should be relied upon hand in hand with specific advice from a lawyer.I'm not a HR Professional and requested the book in order to get a better understanding of the concepts in employment law and HR - from an employee and small business owner's point of view. I found the book helpful for my purposes. Considering that Employment Law: The Essential HR Desk Reference is sold for $49.99, while it is useful, I feel that the other NOLO publications that I've read and used offer better value.
