I have several books on fairies and this is by far the best. It is fun to read and informative.

Elaine Clayton expertly shares with readers the unique qualities of fairies and how they are the delicate link between earthly life (that which is physical matter) and spiritual life (that which is ethereal) and how they are subject to the same laws of nature as our humans. READ THIS BOOK to learn the difference between Angels and Fairies and to discover the many different kinds of fairies who inspire us by play and amusement which appeal to our risk taking and impulsive nature, so we may branch out into life without fear or too much self criticism. A timely look at a topic that is often misunderstood and undervalued by our scientific and spiritual communities. Well Done!

While for the most part, I have loved the “Little Bit of” series, this one gave me mixed feelings.While it does provide some good basic information, it’s what is missing that I am more concerned with. I feel this book portrays fairies as extremely friendly, helpful, benevolent creatures, and that isn’t always true.Even the chapter “Stolen by fairies” is about fairies being helpful. Not about changelings (basically you know – kidnapping) or being trapped in the realm of the fay.What Clayton does cover, she covers well:• Different types of fay such as sweet Williams fairies, imps, changelings, elves, pixies,dryads, gnomes, sylphs, nymphs, selkies, and rock people.• Elemental fairies broke down into earth, wind, water, and fire.• Seasonal with flowers, spring leaf, autumn leaf, and winter leaf fairies.• Crystal fairies.• Dawn fairies.• Twilight fairies.• Fairies of light – broken down by the colors red, blue, and yellow.In each of these categories, she breaks down what the fairy looks like, what they can do for you, and how you can attract them. Not much is provided about the damage or ill effects that can happen from encountering the listed fay.Personally, though my research is limited, I had not heard of fay such as spring leaf or autumn leaf fairies. So, this was new to me.The rest of the book covers topic such as how to travel to fairyland, attracting the fay to your home, and what it means to dream about fairies.I would like to have seen more about the dangers of the fay but this seemed to be skipped over – something that I feel should definitely be included in an introductory style book.Still a pretty book, and it looks great as part of the collection. Just remember there is more to the fay than a happy-go-lucky nature.

Wear reminded Xane that the abovementioned was in play and someone was either trying to facilitate it or stop it from happening.King Ellis wrote a high oh imaginative and creative story. As e and In had a tether of love that could not be broken. He would burn down the world of anyone hurt her. Their love would never die even after death. Neither one of them expected their enemies to be so close to them. But they ended up with their HEA anyway, with them family complete and in tact. I just wished that the story would have explained why Victor, Lucinda's father did what he did.

OMG!!!!! This was freaking AWESOME! I can't wait for book 2. Cin and Xane and Aser were so bad Butt. The words literally jumped off the page. I was hooked from word 1 page 1. I was all the way in when Xane said he would destroy the world for Cin. Damn!!!!! I'm ready for Hina's story. I'm ready to see what the twins become. I'm excited about this series. I haven't been this excited about a series in a long time. The reviews did not do this book justice. The only down side was that it wasn't longer. Please dnt make us wait too long for the next book. I'm all in.

I have to give it to King Ellie this was another great book. Now I can't wait for Asar and Hina story. Then I can't wait until the kids story because that's also going to be a great story. The love a mate has for each other can never be broken by anyone. Even when he was mad he still loved her and knowing that it wasn't her fault to why she left brought them closer together and to find there child. They got the best surprise of them all. Go pick up this book

I have read a lot of books by the author who wrote this and I have a favorite by her and when I tell you this book gave my favorite a run for the money. This book was evolved the author was reborn because I never read a book like this by her. The emotions, feelings, character traits and scene details were all amazing. I felt so much reading this book and I can't wait for what's next.

This was an outstanding read!! King Ellie... you are King!! This short read actually read like a 300 novel. I love this series it was amazing. The characters, this amazing, mysterious supernatural world is absolutely incredible.

I loved.how the story evolved. Great characters and world building. I absolutely love King Ellie, she is my go to author and never fails to give us characters we're sure to fall in love with

This makes it effortless to transform the story book into a hilarious and cohesive script for a five-character Purimspiel (Purim play). The off-beat diction of "The Queen Who Saved Her People" is endearing to children and adults alike, such as when the King thunders at Haman, "You'll get yours, you crook!", or when Haman's wife orders him to "Build a gallows high", to which Haman responds, "A good idea, my sweetie pie." Embedded within the book's deceptively breezy style lie authentic emotions. This is a cleverly crafted book that truly presents, as Balsley's Esther says, "The whole megillah, what and why."

Using the format of a Purim shpiel (comic dramatization or play), Tlida provides an overview of the biblical story of Esther. The short rhythmic verses flow smoothly while maintaining a comic edge. The text is color coded so that it can be used as a reader’s theater script. The black, green, purple, blue, and red fonts correspond to the narrator, King Ahashuerus, Queen Esther, Mordechai and Haman. This color-coding will also make it easier for an adult to change intonations when reading aloud to children. Some of the dialogue is set off in bubbles and the rest is just part of the text. Ilene’s vibrant illustrations add to the understanding of the printed text.

I bought this book for my nephews but more specifically for my 4 year old nephew who is in a rhyming phase. I love that this book is so clever at the rhyming! I even enjoy reading it. Another fun feature is that each character, including the narrator, has a color, so you can coordinate a play or just have each child read the words of a particular color. This book is very true to story, more than many other kids books out there. There is a page where Haman is building the gallows, so if you find that you wish to keep that from your kids, you may want to reconsider. Otherwise, you could skip the page entirely, as it doesn't show anything at the end of the book. One final note, I love that Haman's hat was drawn to look like a hamantaschen! All in all, my nephews enjoyed this book and I look forward to using it every year leading up to Purim (and other times, too).

Great, fun narrative of purim. Follows the Biblical account pretty well with enough detail that it's not too watered down like most children's Jewish stories.I did have a problem though with the quality of the printing of the book. Perhaps it was that the batch that was printed that I got from the stock when I ordered, but three times I had to send back the book for a new one because the pages had smudged Ink on certain pages and the back cover. It's interesting because all of the copies I got on the same Pages smudged. It was either a printing press issue or perhaps inconsistencies and the illustrators graphics. I liked the story very much but was kind of disappointed with the quality of the printers.

This was great! We had so much fun reading through this and re-enacting the drama as a family! It was told in simple fashion for young children yet held the most significant portions of the story intact. Nice illustrations too! Our grandchildren loved it and we made a fun memory with our costumes as we used this book for our little drama. Highly recommended

I read this instead of Esther...it was awesome! Haman was used plenty of times for the kids to yell and scream and ring the grogers.

What an adorable true story for little girls of today. I love that it teaches being a strong woman for the good is something to aspire to. Hope this little gem of a book gets into a lot of the next generation of girls. Goodness, graciousness, with also sticking up for her and G-d's chosen people!

We used this for a Purim spiel this year. It was so much fun!! All the cast hammed it up real good with props and the "Seuss" style reading was laugh for the audience!

I got this as a Christmas present for my rather profane stepfather. It arrived just on time and is lots of fun to read. The book is smaller than I expected (about the size of a dollar bill, shown in the photo). However, that is not an issue for me; it is now more portable! I spent half an hour looking at all the options, they are hilarious to read, also being informative at times. Whether you're an avid Shakespeare lover or simply someone who swears excessively, this book is great and definitely worth the money.

This is a very interesting little book, as it collects all the colorful insults used in Shakespeare's plays. The book is cleverly constructed so you can selectively flip three different insult categories to form a composite insult in Shakespeare's inimitable style. Many of his colorful insults were used only once in his many plays, so they would be otherwise hard to find. But they are all indexed here for your enjoyment. I admit, the subject of this book is so limited that it will provide only a few minutes of amusement. But it is unique and brings to mind the colorful language of many plays that I have not seen performed for years. So reading a few insults from this book always brings back enjoyable memories of the Bard's plays and makes me smile. That's enough for me. Also, this book rests on a coffee table of my home and announces to one and all that I am a serious follower of the Bard, but still enjoy a laugh at his often creative, outrageous and sometimes memorable quotes.

This is a very funny book. And if you'd like to discourage your teen (or older child) from overusing the unimaginative F-word, perhaps this little tome is just the ticket. I think if teachers were allowed to use it in English class for one or two days while teaching Shakespeare, they might get their students to pay more attention. I can see a lesson dedicated to inventing even more insults worthy of the bard using modern language. Failing in that, the book is good for a few laughs at parties and social gatherings. Just put it out on the coffee table and see what happens.

This book is a gimmick, but it is a cute gimmick. There are a total of 162 words of insult, all taken from Shakespeare's writings (mostly his plays). They are divided into three sets of 54. The top two sets are adjectives and the bottom is nouns. So you can flip through to get a "Goatish Fat-Kidneyed Costermonger" or a "Thrasonical Nook-Shotten Arch-Villain."This last brings up another point. I had heard that Shakespeare had invented words and phrases we find commonplace now, and it turns out that his wordy inventions include insults. "Arch-Villain" was first used in print in a Shakespeare play, so there's a good chance he invented the phrase. As you're flipping through the words, if the back of a word card has a feather, it means that the word first appeared in Shakespeare.The back of each card has a brief definition of what the word meant in Shakespeare's day, that's 1564-1616. These can be useful because I may never have guessed that "Nook-Shotten" meant "full of nooks and angles, confusing and deceptive." Just as important, a word's meaning may have changed. The Elizabethan definition of "Incontinent" is "indulging lust without restraint", a bit of a change.I liked reading the book's introduction as much as anything. It certainly explains why you need this book:"You will discover the brave new invective-inventive world of Shakespeare's scurrility.And a welcome world it is when compared with the single syllable insult exchanges produced by some contemporary playwrights who believe the F-word is a superior insult. The usage of the F-word, however, is more akin to the pre-linguistic banality of dogs barking at one another than it is to any inventiveness of human wordsmithery."Very well put-together in a classy package. The card-stock used for the words is thicker than regular paper, so the cards can better handle flipping them back & forth. And everything is held with a large spiral binding. My 2 nieces, ages 11 and 13, grabbed this book from the gift wrap and spent the whole afternoon insulting each other while learning Shakespeare's barbs at the same time. It was a gift for them after they'd starred in a youth Shakespeare play. This was their favorite gift of the pile!

I recently bought this as a secret santa gift for my roommate because what's better than throwing Shakespeare insults at each other during finals week? As soon as I got the package, I immediately flipped through the pages and sent some of the insults I made to my brother. I almost don't want to give it out as a gift and keep it for myself to make family Christmas parties more interesting. Overall, I think it's a great, funny gift for anybody, children and adults. And for the price, I might end up buying another one for my brothers.

I have to keep it to four stars because of the few words like Bull's Pi... (hint: sounds like something Snoop Dog would say) that my 8-year-old has gravitated towards, but it's a load of fun for making more of a joke of insults at home rather than resorting to the repetitive cruel ones that spring up like "fat" or "stupid". Yes, of course we're trying to raise them right, but they'll always have words to say in frustration, and it's better to be focused on creativity and intelligence--which quickly dissipates a lot of the anger or disappointment anyhow--over ignorant harsh words. Needless to say, this book follows many of us around the house :-)

This is a hilarious book! I took it was a white elephant gift to a family party this Christmas and everyone was fighting over it and yelling Shakespearean insults at those who "took" it from them during the game play. It's tons of fun!

About the Author

Kazuo Koike is a prolific Japanese manga writer, novelist and entrepreneur. Early in Koike's career, he studied under Golgo 13 creator Takao Saito and served as a writer on the series. My decision this fall to start reading the manga epic Lone Wolf & Cub, one episode a night before going to bed, appears to be a masterstroke of timing since the 28th and final volume of the series was due out this week. Volume 21, "Fragrance of Death" continues the novel-within-the-novel that began with the previous volume, "A Taste of Poison." The Shogun, tired of the pathetic attempts of Retsudo Yagyu and his retainers to kill Ogami Itto allows the head of the Yagyu clan to use the services of Abe-no-Kaii, the head of the Kuchiyaku, the "official mouths" of the Shougn who taste his food for poisons. Abe-no-Kaii is a master of poisons, but by this point in the story he has failed several times to kill his prime target, Daigoro, or the boy's father. But the attempts continue in his own quest to control the power of the Shogunate in the five stories collected in this volume:(103) "Poison Currents" is the story that will convince you once and for all that Ogami Itto really is a demon; or, at least, is beyond being a mere human. Abe-no-Kaii actually poisons himself to help set the trap that finally succeeds in rending Ogami Itto helpless. Or does it?(104) "Flood of Fire" finds the desperate master poisoner making an attempt on the life of Retsudo Yagyu and risking everything he had done on this desperate ploy.(105) "Fire, Water and Poison" tells of Abe-no-Kaii fleeing the wrath of the Yagyu clan, but still trying to come up with a plan to save his life by being the one to kill Ogami Itto.(106) "Fragrance of Death" finally answers the question as to what Ogami Itto did with all the gold he has been receiving for the many assassinations he has accomplished along the Assassin's Road. But at the same time, father and son require the cutting of some habutae, the unbleached white silk funeral clothes of Japanese tradition. Along with the recovery of his gold, this can only portend that we are coming to another significant moment in this epic quest for vengeance and restored honor.(107) "Kaii's Lullaby" tells of Abe-no-Kaii's final gambit to poision Lone Wolf and Cub, as well as the story of how he came to be the master taster for the Shogun. It is not surprising that Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima are able to invest even a wretched monster like Abe-no-Kaii with some small aspect of sympathy. Of course, this all just ups the ante for the payoff in what may well prove to be the last major skirmish before the final battle is joined.The ebb and flow of this story has been most impressive, especially since it is not until these recent volumes that Koike and Kojima have ketp such a tight narrative focus for so long. But clearly things have changed significantly now that Ogami Itto and Daigoro have entered Edo. The only problem is, I do not think I want this story to end.

I've fallen out of reading manga as I've gotten older, I just can't get into series like I could from years back. However this series I'm in it to the end. And Vagabond LOL. I just enjoy seeing the wisdom and internal strength that Ogami Itto displays rather than be a fight first type of character. There is a deep strength within this character and innocence within his child that I want to see how this story plays out. So I will continue to read this story till the end as I find it to be very well written and drawn.

Moving towards a final climactic showdown with the Yagyu. But Lone Wolf has to deal with a master of poisons first.

I also bought The Emotional Life of Your Brain...by Richard Davidson, Ph.D. and Sharon Begley. The two books are very complementary. A must read for those interested in the intersection of science and the Eastern Wisdom tradition of Buddhism.

This book does not focus on religious beliefs, but does show how religion can view and use meditation techniques to improve their teaching and belief structure. Mostly it encompasses the scientific findings and continuing research which has brought about amazing results that solidify the benefits of meditation, and show the value in continued research and practice. This book is a validation in scientific terms of meditation as a medical treatment.

I have had the pleasure of hearing live, both Jon Kabat-Zinn and Richard Davidson, so was very interested in this work. As I work my way through the book, it is like "being there" and listening to this very powerful dialogue. I find myself re-reading pages, and then turning back to the index, and looking for links and connections that add to my understanding. This is going to be on my must read list for individuals in my meditation and mindfulness experiences from cancer survivors to employees. Enjoy and grow!

While I found it desirable to reread some material, I gained a better understanding as a result. It is a very helpful book that expands the applications of Buddhist philosophy in everyday life.

These top dogs in meditation enlighten you with personal accounts that will at once, open your mind yet quiet it, too. Having heard renown researcher Richie Davidson and the Honorable Dalai Lama speak in Madison, WI, this book captures their amazing essences. You will delight in this book. Lovely and fascinatingly engaging.

Mental training/ mind training should be a required activity in schools and this method seemscreditable to me. Those of us in the western tradition are far too "external" in our way of thinking andliving. It's no wonder we have so many physical and mental problems.

I believe in the power of our mind. Healing is an essential part of that in so many ways. Not only in a physical realm, but in a deeper mental state. This book is nothing we haven't heard in our lives, but reminds us that it is up to us to make the changes and anything is possible if we believe in ourselves. We start within us and it will start to extend like tendrils to other. Namaste.

I have followed the Mind and Life Institute for many years now and after reading this book on my Kindle I purchased it and re-read it. So bought this copy as a gift for my Neurosurgeon for Christmas - - he now wants to do more research on my brain :):) Highly recommend this to anyone! This study guide was decent, but some of the answers are incorrect. It only included half of the solutions, which were not very well analyzed. I was helpful when I was taking the class, but it could be better.

There was very little writing in it, so I was very pleased with the result. It helped a lot with understanding the materials since it offered a step by step explanation and descripiton most of the time. Definitely a good guide to use for assistance in problems, especially because of the explaining in the manual.The shipping was also done in a timely manner, so it was great for me since I didn't know there was a solutions manual and no answers to the problems in the back of the actual book and it was in the middle of the semester I realized I really needed it.

This was a great solutions manual to accompany my Organic Chemistry book. Unlike other books, the textbook did not have the odd answers in the back, so the solutions manual was necessary. There were also helpful study guides with consolidated information from the chapter.

I loved it

This is a great manual. It irks me that they charge you another $100+ just to get the answers to questions you've already paid for. However, this guide does a good job of explaining answers, which is a HUGE help, and something many other guides gloss over.

It is the study guide and solutions manual to the organic chemistry book we are using. It is easy to use with very few mistakes. It was an excellent purchase.

I'm still working my way through the book, but since there are no other reviews, I'll share my thoughts so far...This book is a great starting point for getting your online business going. Consider it a basic outline for all the factors you're going to have to consider when starting your business. You won't find all the answers you need here, but this book will get you pointed in the right direction. As far as I can tell, the information is very up-to-date, which I imagine is a big challenge for a printed book about operating on the web.Many of the most popular books about online business creation are more inspirational. This book is practical. I think a good mix of the two is in order. So if you're looking for a practical guide, this is a nice option to consider.My only (minor) complaint is the silly "11 books in 1" tagline. No, it's not 11 books. It's one book with 11 sections. Just because the editors didn't bother to tie all the 11 sections in together, doesn't mean you get 11 books. But that's ok. I didn't want 11 books (who would?).

This book has definitely helped me start building my company. It has all the basics to hep you build your company, market it, and help with the build of your website. I found my website builder didn't offer much, especially when it comes to putting policies on the site, and this book helped me make great suggestions for other future companies using their website building platform.

I got this book for a college class, and it was pretty intimidating at first with its 800+ pages.But it's a really really good book on the subject and worth the read!!Part of it are a little dry, but most of the sections are kept brief and to the point, so even if you're not overly enjoying the topic, you're getting what you need to know from it, and it's information that will help your business that you might not have considered otherwise.The sections are nicely split up so that, although as a previous reviewer mentions, it's not 11 books in one, you can still kind of pretend it is, and tackle the pages by subject area. That way you can concentrate on learning one thing at the time and don't feel you have to rush through 800 pages, but instead can split it into chunks of around 200 pages at a time while still getting complete information.Really surprised by this book, considering it's in the for Dummies series, and only costs around 30. Well worth it if you're considering starting an online business, or an offline business with online aspects, such as a website or an online store.I borrowed a digital version of this book initially, but found it hard to follow or jump to sections that way. I much preferred the big heavy print version, maybe also because it fed my ego looking at how many pages I'd gotten through as I worked through the course and book.

I am still reading the book. Data is extremely helpful especially in the area of legal requirements for a business. Thank you to the authors for assembling this work as it makes it much easier to create a plan on creating my own business.

The book arrived in less than 72 hours after I purchased it. And let me say this book is a wealth of knowledge. I have read it cover to cover and have many page markers. It's written in easy to understand lingo and points out many things most people might over look. It's a large book but worth every word. I highly suggest purchasing this if your even considering starting a business. easy read, very detailed, great price, up to date , a must read. I would recommend this to friends and family. One of the better purchases I have made thus far in creating my online business. no regrets.

I don't like to post a review until I've finished a book but this one is obviously the one a person needs to get started in an e-business. As outlined in other posts it doesn't have advanced, minute details but it does bring up every subject one needs to know about in starting a business including a business plan, taxes, home office, internet security, etc. So far I've only finished about a third of the book and find that it's well written. It doesn't just have lots of information in it the book is easy to read and interesting. The part about taxes is not as interesting as the part about profit but that's life.

I love this book it really is an amazing book. This book really goes through all the steps you need to know to open an online business. Very detailed, easy to understand and I highly recommend it.

As a tradesman with some college, this book was invaluable to me and my current success as I spent the last few months setting up my website and now I am not only selling playsets on a regular basis, but I am installing and servicing them and have had to hire help to answer the phones , work in the field, and had to get an accountant to help with all of the money that is coming in and to aid me in my taxes. Civilian Warriors is a easy to read book that takes you inside the life of Erik Prince. While it is very informative and gives the reader an inside look at the life of Blackwater, and gives you a look at the what the political machine has become. I could feel the bitterness that Mr. Prince has towards certain government agencies, and individuals within those agencies. However, I cannot say that I blame him.If you're looking for a different perspective of how the world of private contractors works, the challenges they face, and the type of work they do, this is a great book to read.

If one were to have an informed opinion/point-of-view on contractors use in war zone and specifically on Blackwater then this is required reading.Erik Prince gives an honest take from his position on the company he built and that America needed while also, in my opinion, blowing the lid off of the negative press his company received all these years. I read this book after reading other military books [The Way of the knife, The Red Circle, Honor and Betrayal] and it offered me a completely different look on how far the Government is willing to go to seek (political) cover and hang folks to dry. Overall, Erik Prince does a fine job explaining and offering historical context, very personal accounts and admitting flaws, and perspective...it's really up to the reader to decide to either absorb or ignore after 'hearing' from the other side - the proverbial horse's mouth.I would recommend reading The Way of the Knife as a companion to give a reader an idea of the other half that Erik Prince alludes to but cannot explicitly mention, namely the CIA assassination program via surrogates like Blackwater. In retrospect, the fact remains that despite how divisive contractors are in the war on terror with people, politicians, POTUS...they are still being employed and contracts renewed, even Blackwater or Academi as it is now known. That in itself speaks for itself.

A fascinating account of Eric Prince's creation of Black Water and the evolution of the the company during the war on terror. Eric Prince comes off as extremely sincere and the book does wonders to rehabilitate the image of Black Water as a company of mercenaries who sole goal is to profit from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Instead Prince convincingly creates the image of a company full of dedicated men and women who were no less professional or patriotic than their counterparts in the Armed Services. Pivotal moments in the company's history covered including the killing of 4 contractors in Fallujah and the 2007 killing of Iraqi civilians in Nisour Square. Of particular interest is Blackwater's relationship with the CIA which is covered in a separate chapter by a different author, because Prince to cannot comment on the relationship for confidentiality reasons. The account is much superior to Jeremy Scahill's account of Black Water. Although I respect Scahill and greatly enjoyed Dirty Wars, I feel his own account may have been a tad bit zealous in his attacks on Prince in calling him a modern day conservative Crusader. Prince also freely admits his faults including his infidelity with his wife, and he clearly doesn't try to portray himself as a 'saint'. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the private security industry and their evolution in the war on terror.

The contents of this book fully demonstrates the idea that, with "things" historical, accuracy increases with distance. I think it important to hear the other side in this, up until now, largely one-sided discussion over the role of PMCs in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prince lays out a solid defense of and argument for the existance of PMC and that these contracted forces, rightly used, provide a necessary service for the United States; providing logistical and manpower support that the current American force structure is unable to provide.The author opens for the reader a window through which one can catch a glimpse of the bzyentime path through which both the Department of State and the Pentagon make decisions and develop guidelines through which contractors must operate (State's guidelines to PMC's included the brand of sunglasses individual contractors were to wear!).I came away from this book with a more complete perspective on the role of PMC's and an informed appreciation of the individual dedication and sacrifice of the men and women who ably served this country as private citizens in the war on terror.

I think this should be mandatory reading for anyone looking to start a company. Great read, I'd highly recommend it.

If you’re going to be someone in charge of anything in any kind of a company, read this book.If all you want are the big ideas, or Horowitz’ philosophy, you can get them from his blog and articles. You don’t need to buy this book. But if you want a handy advisor for that 3 AM moment when you’re thinking about firing someone you like, buy the book. Keep it handy. I’ve had those moments and I wish I’d had it.The Hard Thing About Hard Things has a whole lot of information packed inside it. You can read it from cover to cover and get a lot of value. Or, you can think of it as a series of conversations with bosses and mentors. Horowitz had a lot of those. And his mentors included people like Andy Grove and Jim Barksdale.The wisdom that he shares and credits to them, reminds me of the wisdom that I received from bosses and mentors and which I later shared with protégés. This is a book for CEOs of venture capital backed or public companies with 10+ employees. Unless this you are this CEO, this book will not be useful nor give you good advice; it will merely be interesting or a “what if” book.It is probably even more narrow: CEOs of venture capital or public TECH companies IN THE SILICON VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA. The advice is very specific to Silicon Valley culture and a specific job in that culture. I’ve worked in Silicon Valley for 20+ years as an engineer and founded my own tech startup 2 years ago, yet this book still does not apply to me because I do not have the exact job described in this book.That being said, the book made a lot sense, seemed to cover new ground (especially CEO psychology and emotions) and was a quick read. It’s a must-read for the 500 CEOs or so that it’s intended for. My one doubt is that “Is It Okay To Hire From Your Friend’s Company?” is probably illegal in California.I got this book on the recommendation from Jumpcut Viral Academy and they should not have recommended it nor do I recommend that others read it. It’s simply not applicable nor useful to non-CEOs. But it’s easy to be star-struck by the author and inappropriately recommend this book as something that it is not. It’s an “already CEO” guide, not about self motivation, not about how to get promoted to CEO, not how to help your CEO, not how to be a VP, not how to network, not how to get funding, not how to start a business and on and on.

“Every time I read a management or self-help book, I find myself saying, “That’s fine, but that wasn’t really the hard thing about the situation.” The hard thing isn’t setting a big, hairy, audacious goal. The hard thing is laying people off when you miss the big goal. The hard thing isn’t hiring great people. The hard thing is when those “great people” develop a sense of entitlement and start demanding unreasonable things. The hard thing isn’t setting up an organizational chart. The hard thing is getting people to communicate within the organization that you just designed. The hard thing isn’t dreaming big. The hard thing is waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat when the dream turns into a nightmare. The problem with these books is that they attempt to provide a recipe for challenges that have no recipes. There’s no recipe for really complicated, dynamic situations. There’s no recipe for building a high-tech company; there’s no recipe for making a series of hit songs; there’s no recipe for playing NFL quarterback; there’s no recipe for running for president; and there’s no recipe for motivating teams when your business has gone to crap. It works.”I began my review by quoting the first page. I will quote here with his final page: “Hard things are hard because there are no easy answers or recipes. They are hard because your emotions are at odds with your logic. They are hard because you don’t know the answer and you cannot ask for help without showing weakness. When I first became a CEO, I genuinely thought that I was the only one struggling. Whenever I spoke to other CEOs, they all seemed like they had everything under control. Their businesses were always going “fantastic” and their experience was inevitably “amazing”. But as I watched my peers’ fantastic, amazing businesses go bankrupt and sell for cheap, I realized I was probably not the only one struggling.” […] “Embrace your weirdness, your background, your instinct. If the keys are not there, they do not exist.”The book is not an easy read. So you may not enjoy the book if you do not need to apply it now. Still it is a great book.
