'Steam Train, Dream Train' is another wonderful edition to this captivating series for young readers. The story is intriguing and comforting as the perfect book to read before bed. The characters are adorable, and children who love animals and trains will cherish this book. The colorful illustrations are stunning, and add excitement to the story. I can understand how much a child will adore each fun-filled page until the end. This book will indeed put a smile on a young reader's face, while encouraging them to learn and ask questions. This book is beautifully written and illustrated, inspiring, and delightful. It entertains from beginning to end, with precious characters. A perfect gift for the young reader, and a gem in this series. Highly recommended!

Bought the boardbook version of this book. My kids love goodnight goodnight construction site and I knew they’d love this book too. The story is great, they enjoy reading it BUT if I were to do it again I would order the full size version. The boardbook is nice for traveling and durability but the pictures have so many fun details that are hard to see in the smaller boardbook size. The colors also don’t pop as much - I looked at the full size book in a store and wished I had gotten that version instead. When we read the boardbook I let my kids hold the flashlight on my phone up to the pages so they can really take it all in.

I got this book the same day it was released, which was awesome on Amazon's part. I have twin toddlers (~ 23 months) and they both love books. I chose this book for them because it is something different than what they already have (regular board books) and because the story interested me. I have not read the full version of this book but love this one the way it is (it is a novelty board book, abbreviated version). The book has a side bar with five buttons on it which, when pressed upon, make different sounds (engine's horn sound, monkey laughing, etc.). Here are the cons to the side bar-- The buttons are not raised, so I had to show my toddlers that pressing upon the icons will make sound. One of my toddlers really enjoyed the sound of the monkey laughing and he laughed every time he pressed that button.- The sound is not very clear and the volume is not very loud. I wish it was a little louder and a bit clearer.Back to the book itself, the side bar buttons are incorporated into the story via the use of their symbols. My toddlers are not old enough to really comprehend that, but I think an older child might enjoy pressing the corresponding buttons when the story is read. The story is sweet, short and entertaining. It's about a train that pulls into a station and various things are loaded on to it by various characters, such as monkeys, polar bears, etc. The illustrations are really nice and engaging. The page where the cars are being loaded was of particular interest to one of my toddlers, who kept pointing out the cars. They liked this book so much, I read the story to them multiple times in a short period of time. Given the fact that my toddlers really like this book, I would definitely recommend it to others!

I love to find new books for my little one as I hate reading the same thing every night. We had recently added this to our collection and unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I had to hide it. He loved it! A lot. In fact he insisted I read it over and over again every night for 2 weeks straight until it suddenly went missing. Eventually it'll be "found" again as it was a good story. It's short enough that it's a perfect read for bedtime but long enough that it'll allow for sufficient snuggle time and the pictures are entertaining.

I was on the fence about buying the sound book or the original version. You probably can't go wrong with either. I think the story is very cute and my son loves the book. He also loves pushing the monkey sound repeatedly. :) That can be a little distracting to the flow of the story, but he's 2. If he's happy, I'm happy, and maybe as he gets older he will enjoy ALL of the sounds provided in the order they are dictated it the story. Overall happy with this purchase!

I bought this for my daughter when she was an infant. She is a toddler now and still enjoys reading the book with me. The rhymes are catchy but gentle/calming enough to be a good bedtime book. For a simple board book, she actually learned a lot from it such as colors and animals. When she got older, she pointed out other nouns such as bubbles, book, moon and even verbs like "reading" and "growling" and is even exposed to the different types of train cars. It's a great book for young children. We have the original Steam Train Dream Train book but that book hasn't quite caught her attention because of its length. Great version of Steam Train for infants and toddlers.

Very refreshing to read with a grandchild just before sleep. Worked perfectly on the Kindle. It was fun tapping on the text for it to be enclosed, enlarged, and focused to read, then tapping again to get the full picture of text and the drawing.Really enjoyed. Would imagine a child up to 5 would enjoy having this read to them and then a child 5 to about 8 would like reading it for themselves.

Cute story. Love this author and illustrator. Will be getting the other books they offer. My son loves all of the cute pictures and the rhyming story.

We got this book for kindle and read it for the first time tonight. My five year old's impression:"I liked that the little boy had a toy steam train dream train! [at the end.] I liked the part where the t rex got a bone. I liked learning about the different cars, and the words that said steam train dream train. They called it dream train because the animals are all dreaming and they are sleeping on the train and they got refreshing snacks. I like when the animals got out and were doing their chores."Clearly he was paying attention and many of the parts caught his fancy! I personally like the sleepy palette and the cute animals all working together nicely.

Review

“Powerful . . . Brown calls on readers to live their professed ideals rather than simply state them.”—Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"Takes readers on a journey through the racial divide in a way we've truly never seen before. Powerful, haunting, and absolutely impossible to put down, [Brown's] account of what it's like to grow up black, middle-class, and female in modern America is not to be missed."—PopSugar, "Best New Books to Read in May""A deeply personal celebration of blackness that simultaneously sheds new light on racial injustice and inequality while offering hope for a better future."—Shondaland, "12 New Books to Add to Your Reading List This May""Moves the race conversation forward . . . Brown offers a powerful perspective on race with her first-hand account." —WNYC.org"I read Austin Channing Brown’s incredible book in one sitting. This is one that every black woman needs to read to be validated and every white person needs to read to receive some perspective . . . Brown has concisely articulated the burdens, questions, and frustrations that I find myself experiencing daily as a black woman."—Sojourners"What a stunning debut from a seasoned racial justice leader. Austin does double duty by fiercely affirming blackness while simultaneously unveiling and demystifying the subtle effects of white supremacy among Christians. I trust Austin, I listen to Austin and I learn from Austin. I hope you will too."  —Christena Cleveland, professor at Duke University and author of Disunity in Christ   “Austin Channing Brown introduces herself as a master memoirist, delivering a manifesto on racism in America that will live on shelves besides Ta-Nehisi Coates and Michelle Alexander. This book will break open hearts and minds. It’s an example of how one woman can change the world by telling the truth about her life with unflinching, relentless courage.” —Glennon Doyle, bestselling author of Love Warrior and Carry On, Warrior, and president of Together Rising    “I have laughed, I have held back tears, I have reflected with joy, hope, and hurt while reading. Austin captures perfectly the sentiment of many black people in America. She’s not only telling her story, she’s telling our story. Austin is a gift to the body and the culture.” —Lecrae, Grammy award-winning artist and bestselling author of Unashamed   “Austin is one of my most important teachers. I’m Still Here is devastating, beautiful, and haunting and it leaves no room for a tepid reaction. Her crystal clear voice will move you, push you, and break your heart. Prophetic and tender, I plan to put this book in every pair of hands I know and join her in the dismantling of white supremacy. She’s still here and I’m with her.” —Jen Hatmaker, New York Times bestselling author of Of Mess and Moxie and For the Love"The movement toward diversity and forgiveness, [Brown] points out, too often involves white people seeking credit for recognizing the crimes of the past even as they do nothing to fix things today, and black people being required to provide endless absolution and information while calmly enduring dignity-eroding and rage-inducing injustices."—Library Journal (Starred Review)"Brown passionately rejects facile reliance on “hope,” stating that “in order for me to stay in this work, hope must die” and “[t]he death of hope gives way to a sadness that heals, to anger that inspires, to a wisdom that empowers me.” An eloquent argument for meaningful reconciliation focused on racial injustice rather than white feelings."—Booklist

I am a white woman and I needed this book. Let me first start by saying everything the negative reviews say is true. This book makes white people uncomfortable because it makes us confront our own biases and ignorance. The difference between the negative reviews and the positive reviews is how you choose to read that information and what you choose to do with it. It was very unnerving that every time I felt a certain emotion bubble up, Austin Channing Brown told me a few sentences later that I was feeling it and why it's not helpful. A few times throughout the book, I had to swallow my pride, wipe my petulant scowl off my face, and keep reading so I could grow. I highlighted all over this book and have already encouraged friends to read it, so we can have study sessions. It's one of those books that you need to keep around, and keep going back to, talking about it with friends, and getting better in the process. If you read this book with an open mind, you can't help but learn something valuable.

As a white man, I have little access to the experiences of people who have been systematically barred from places of power and privilege in our culture. Thank God for authors like Austin, who - with grace, courage, clarity and wit - invite me to see the world through their eyes. I'M STILL HERE is a powerful look at our world from the perspective of a person excluded by many of the structures and systems that benefit a person like me. This book is challenging, prophetic and beautiful. It's a gift to our word that couldn't have come at a better time.

The impacts of white cultural norms on people of color are invisible to white people. That means in addition to overt racism and white supremacy, there’s also millions of well-meaning white Americans who unknowingly make life more difficult for people of color. This book helps change that. It offers white readers an understanding of what is so often invisible to us, and how our actions impact other people every day.Of course, this book is even more powerful as a work of solidarity for women if color. It names and gives voice to their experices. And, it does so with phenomenal writing.Don’t miss this book.

I read this book as a woman who grew up in Ohio, in a 49% white and 49% black town and even growing up in this bubble... I still recognize after reading this book that not only do 'we need to do more' to show basic human decency and compassion, but individually each of us needs to confront our biases. As Austin eloquently puts, white people don't get a pass for their racism just because they've confessed it to some black person they haven't yet wronged. As after reading this book I don't just want to give a review of her spot on commentary, and indeed I don't think I can ever give a review of someone's memoir because it's their life, but I want to give a review of America. And I have to say I would giev this book all 50 stars on the US flag. And I give America zero stars, until black children no longer need to be taught that they need to keep their hands out of their pockets, until a black adult can sit outside on a porch without fear of being shot, until each individual person can understand the phrase: Black Lives Matter

Austin Channing Brown joins the ranks of vein-opening memoirists, offering her story for anyone who will choose to listen. Well worth the read.

Clear, succinct, and poignant. This book isn’t really for white people, but every white person should read it. Austin Channing Brown just tells the truth with conviction and feeling. I have been reading books about race for a few years and this is the first I’ve seen in a white, upper-middle class, and specifically ministry context. She discusses racism in places that are supposed to be above it, white guilt in a way that I have never heard so clearly defined and contended with, and the fear and glory of her own black body. I wish everyone would read it.

Read this book again and again. Share it with everyone you know. Open your heart and your mind. Set aside your ego and really think about the book’s message. It is thought-provoking, inspiring, and painful. It challenges the reader to self reflect and to look at things through a different lense.I rarely find myself at a loss for words, but I am struggling to write more than I have already written. I need time to consider the book’s message. No doubt, I will be reading it again soon. For now, I’ll close my review with a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Channing Brown for writing this book.

A few chapters in to this book, I finally let my defenses down enough to let Austin's story come through. A quick but engaging read, "I'm Still Here" is a memoir that everyone should read. It's a book to revisit too. The way she fuses personal and family stories with current events and deeper reflection on our (post)modern American political situation creates just the right fusion for a great auto biographical account that does provoke questions and challenges but is simply beautiful in its own right

The unflattering review is not for Seneca or his letters but for the false advertising.Amazon indicates that the Kindle version is the Penguin edition with the Campbell translation. Not so.I returned my e-copy for a refund.

These letters of Roman philosopher Seneca are a treasure chest for anybody wishing to incorporate philosophic wisdom into their day-to-day living. By way of example, below are a few Seneca gems along with my brief comments:"Each day acquire something which will help you to face poverty, or death, and other ills as well. After running over a lot of different thoughts, pick out one to be digested throughout the day." --------- I'm completely with Seneca on this point. I approach the study of philosophy primarily for self-transformation. There is no let-up in the various challenges life throws at us - what we can change is the level of wisdom we bring to facing our challenges."It is not the man who has too little who is poor, but the one who hankers after more." ---------- This is the perennial philosophy from Aristotle to Epicurus to Epictetus to Buddha: we have to face up to our predicament as humans; we are in the realm of desire. The goal of living as a philosopher is to deal with our desires in such a way that we can maintain our tranquility and joy."But if you are looking on anyone as a friend when you do not trust him (or her) as you trust yourself, you are making a grave mistake, and have failed to grasp sufficiently the full force of true friendship." --------- Friendship was one key idea in the ancient world that modern philosophy seems to have forgotten. Seneca outlines how we must first test and judge people we consider as possible friends, but once we become friends with someone, then an abiding and complete trust is required."The very name of philosophy however modest the manner in which it is pursued, is unpopular enough as it is: imagine what the reaction would be if we started dissociating ourselves from the conventions of society. Inwardly everything should be different but our outward face should conform with the crowd. Our clothes should not be gaudy, yet they should now be dowdy either. . . . Let our aim be a way of life not diametrically opposed to, but better than that of the mob.". ---------- The call of true philosophy isn't an outward display but an internal attitude. There is a long, noble tradition of living the life of a philosopher going back to ancient Greece and Rome, that has, unfortunately, been mostly lost to us in the West. It is time to reclaim our true heritage."You may be banished to the end of the earth, and yet in whatever outlandish corner of the world you may find yourself stationed, you will find that place, whatever it may be like, a hospitable home. Where you arrive does not matter so much as what sort of person you are when you arrive there." -------- This is the ultimate Stoic worldview: our strength of character is more important that the particular life situation we find ourselves in. Very applicable in our modern world; although, chances are we will not be banished to another country, many of us will one day be banished to a nursing home."This rapidity of utterance recalls a person running down a slope and unable to stop where he meant to, being carried on instead a lot farther than he intended, at the mercy of his body's momentum; it is out of control, and unbecoming to philosophy, which should be placing her words, not throwing them around." --------- The ancient world had many people who talked a mile a minute, an unending gush of chatter. The Greco-Roman philosophers such as Seneca and Plutarch warn against garrulousness. Rather, we should mark our words well. From my own experience, when I hear long-winded pontifications, I feel like running away."The next thing I knew the book itself had charmed me into a deeper reading of it there and then. . . . It was so enjoyable that I found myself held and drawn on until I ended up having read it right through to the end without a break. All the time the sunshine was inviting me out, hunger prompting me to eat, the weather threatening to break, but I gulped it all down in one sitting." --------- Ah, the experience of being pulled into a good book! When we come upon such a book, go with it!

Simple practical wisdom to help you navigate chaotic life. There are so many jewels in this book that I've probably highland more things than I have not. I simply cannot recall the last work of literature that turned on as many lightbulbs for me except perhaps the bible when I first read it. This wisdom though transcends religion in my humble opinion. A must read, but I warn you; the wisdom and enlightenment you gain from reading Seneca's letters will only further estrange you form your dumb friends. They won't get it or your interest in it, and as they continue to fumble about in the dark, the sweetness of your metaphysical ascension will mingle with some bitterness for their blindness.

As I progress on my quest for wisdom from the classical periods I recently read Cicero's "Selected Works" and Lurcreius' "On the Nature of Things" both of which I thought lacked in any deep knowledge and found them both to be greatly disappointing. So it was to my great delight that I stumbled on Seneca's "Letters From a Stoic" which I highly recommend. Some of my favorite passages loosely organized around a theme are as follows:On One's Relationship to the Material World:*It is not the man who has too little who is poor, but the one who hankers after more.*You ask what is the proper limit to a person's wealth? First, having what is essential, and second having what is enough.*Although the wise man does not hanker after what he has lost, he does prefer not lose them.*The qualities of a just, a good and an enlightened character does not regard as valuable anything that can be taken away.*I am not against possessing riches but I want to ensure that you possess them without tremors. On One's Relationship to Society:*Inwardly everything should be different but our outward face should conform to the crowd.*The road is long if one poceeds by way of precepts but short and effectual if by way of personal example.*You ask me to say what you should consider it particularly important to avoid. My answer is this: a mass crowd.*Associating with people in large numbers is actually harmful.*Retire into yourself as much as you can. Associate with people who are likely to improve you.*Avoid whatever is approved of by the mob.*If you shape your life according to nature, you will never be poor; if according to people's opinions you will never be rich.On One's Relationship to the Body:*Pick (any exercise) for ease and straightforwardness...but whatever you do, return from body to mind very soon.*Where you arrive does not matter so much as what sort of person you are when you arrive there.*A way of speaking which is restrained, not bold, suits a wise man in the same way as an unassuming sort of walk does.*Refusal to be influenced by one's body assure one's freedom.*People who know no self-restraint lead stormy and disordered lives. On Death:*Every day, therefore, should be regulated as if it were the one that brings up the rear, the one that rounds out and completes our lives.*If God adds the morrow we should accept it joyfully.*The man you should admire and imitate is the one who finds it a joy to live and in spite of that is not reluctant to die.*You will go the way that all things go...This is the law to which you were born.*You will die not because you are sick but because you are alive...In getting well again you may be escaping some ill health but not death.*We are born unequal, we die equal. On the Value of Philosophy/Stoicism:*It molds and builds the personality, orders one's life, regulates one's conduct, shows one what one should do and what should leave undone, sits at the helm and keeps one on the course as one is tossed about in perilous seas.*Only philosophy will wake us; only philosophy will shake us out of that heavy sleep. Devote yourself entirely to her.*For the only safe harbor in this life's tossing, troubled sea is to refuse to be bothered about what the future will bring and to stand ready and confident, squaring the breast to take without skulking or flinching whatever fortune hurls at us.*It is in not man's power to have whatever he wants; but he has it in his power not to wish for what he hasn't got.*Part of the blame lies on the teachers of philosophy, who today teach us how to argue instead of how to live...The result has been the transformation of philosophy, the study of wisdom, into philology, the study of words.*No man is good by accident, virtue has to be learned.By the way, before renouncing all worldly possessions keep in mind that Seneca did not practice what he preached, was intimately attached to the material world, and readers interested in an excellent biography of Seneca's life and role during Nero's reign should consider reading James Romm's "Dying Every Day: Seneca at the Court of Nero."

This is a book that I keep next to my bed, and when I take trips it goes in my suitcase. I've given this book away several times and plan to give it away more, but I always buy a new one. Sometimes it's like looking into the mirror of western civilization, others it's like looking at our cultural family tree, but most of the time it's a book that consoles me and offers new perspectives no matter what I'm dealing with in life.On my shelf this book is next to the Bible, the Tao Te Ching, and Stephen King. It's also a book I've read passages aloud to my younger siblings during a day in the park -- that was no easy task -- but they were held captive by the introspection this book helps to trigger.

So many places I had never heard about! You really must try a visit to the Polka escalator and Northern Chocolate Company! Loved that it had a variety of choices so we could find something for my group of friends and also my family. I liked the useful lists at the back of the book that show neighborhood destinations and gave ideas for free places to go.

Awesome! Includes many unusual, out of the way ideas for a really fun time. Catagorized and quick reading. On our way to WI now and will use the list often. Love this book!

My mother-in-law loved this book! Fast shipping!
