The Greek text is accompanied by footnotes providing textual variations and there are also extensive notes from the translator discussing points of interest, including the relationship between the text and known history or conflicts with other contemporary accounts. The books that comprise this volume (18-19) are of particular interest to students of the New Testament. Josephus discusses among other things the various religious groups in Palestine at the time (Essenes, Sadducees, etc.), the machinations of the Herodian family and their interrelationships (it is from Josephus that we learn the name Salome, misapplied throughout history to the daughter who dances for Herod in Mark), and the career of Pilate. Book 18 also contains the so-called Testamentum Flavianum attesting to the historical existence of Christ as well as the equally contentious passage concerning John the Baptist. One cannot help agreeing with the scholars who argue that Luke borrowed from Josephus in constructing his biography of Jesus. When we read Josephus therefore, we may be reading the very same material that the authors of the gospels were inspired by as they wove their narratives. About the Author

Edward Aldwell received his bachelor's and master's degrees from The Juilliard School where he studied piano with Adele Marcus. He studied theory and analysis privately with Carl Schachter and later with Ernst Oster. He has been a member of the Techniques of Music department at Mannes since 1969 and a member of the piano department since 1973. He has taught theory at The Curtis Institute of Music since 1971 and is currently Chairperson of the theory department. He has given recitals and master classes throughout the United States as well as in Israel, England and Germany, many of them devoted to the works of Bach. Recordings include both books of THE WELL-TEMPERED CLAVIER, GOLDBERG VARIATIONS and FRENCH SUITES OF BACH, as well as works of Hindemith and Faure.

A very good book on tonal harmony. Enphasis is made upon voice leading - title says- and the chords that can support a soprano line or movement; also in the bass. In my opinion a very interesting point of view, making the sequences of chords understandable. I give it 4 stars, because the ordering of the topics is rather mixed sometimes, anyway a very good book !

These cd's made it possible to study the examples with out my Piano with me. Summer classes went better because of these cd's!

A very valuable book in the study of Harmony and Voice Leading. Along with the workbooks, this is highly recommended.

When I was a student at the University of Michigan School of Music in the late seventies and early eighties, we used the then brand new first edition of this book. I thought it was quite good then, and I believe this third edition to be an even better book. It treats the subjects of tonal harmony and voice leading quite well. There have been some solid improvements in the way a few things are explained and some changes in the musical examples. However, it is still fundamentally the same sound course for undergraduate music theory it has been since 1978. However, it now comes in one volume instead of the two volumes of the first edition.The text begins with a quick review of the basics of musical grammar, a brief introduction of the rudiments of musical notation, intervals, rhythm (and meter), chords, and four-part harmony. Part II talks about the powerful relationship between the tonic and dominant chords, chord progressions elaborating that relationship, and even the dominant as a key area (whether you call it tonicization or modulation is up to you). Part III discusses the implications of root position, first inversion, and second inversion chords in elaborating harmonies and in sequences. Part IV is actually about contrapuntal issues, but is framed in a discussion of melodic figuration. Part V introduces chromaticism, modal mixture, and extends the discussion on uses of seventh chords. Part VI extends the discussion of chromaticism and includes ninth and eleventh chords, Phrygian II (Neapolitan chords), augmented sixths, and more types of mixture. There is also important discussion of the implications all this has for voice leading and modulation to other key areas.Some might wish that it contained some treatments of graphical (Schenkerian notation), and I am one of them, but that is a quibble compared to this book's many strengths. The counter argument is that until the students really have a handle on the basics of harmony and how voice leading is handled through the music of the early twentieth century, there really isn't a way for them to grasp the meaning of the larger structures Schenker's graphical notation was created to represent. I think that is a fair point, but still think there are some basics in notation that could be introduced early in the process when talking about the basic structure of melodies and supporting harmonies and candential formulas.The explanations are clear and the musical examples apt. In fact, someone could actually work through this book on his own and grasp what is being presented. Of course, an instructor is helpful to check work and explain things that remain unclear in the student's mind, but that is really true for any book on any subject.There are some wonderful materials to supplement this text. The most important are the two work books (WB I - ISBN 0-15-506226-3 / WB II - ISBN 0-15-506234-4. They are useful exercises that help the student learn the material by actively working through the application of the materials discussed.Another resource that should not be overlooked is the two-CD set (ISBN 0-534-52216-5) that contains performances of the hundreds of musical examples in the textbook (not the workbooks). It can really help a student to listen to examples that are unclear. If a student can play them herself or hear them in his head, so much the better, but these discs can enrich reading through the textbook and making sure that you understand what is being presented to you.Kudos to Professors Aldwell and Schachter for this wonderful text and supporting materials.

I had the wonderful opportunity to live in both Georgia and Azerbaijan during the late-1990's-early 2000's. Reading Stephen Powell's book brought back all the good memories of my time and the special citizens I met in these countries.

I don’t read much non-fiction, and haven’t read many travel memoirs, but now that I am working in Travel Medicine, feel that I should, especially to learn about the parts of the world I haven’t visited myself. We are starting to see more intrepid travellers visiting Central Asia, but even so, the Southern Caucasus is not a common destination. This account of a retired Welsh journalist’s exploration of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia in 2015-2016 was an enjoyable introduction to a part of the world that I really don’t know enough about.Around the time of the 2011 rugby World Cup in New Zealand , I remember watching coverage of passionate Georgian supporters and googling the country, and being amazed at how beautiful it looked, and how much history it had. Georgia is the author’s first destination, and he describes both the cities and his hiking expeditions with great affection. He then visits Azerbaijan, which sounded like harder work, and finally Armenia, covering a lot more of the tragic history and geo-politics. I confess I had never heard of the 1915 genocide, where at least 600 000 Armenians were murdered in Turkey. He explains that it is still not recognised as official genocide by several countries, and that this is one of the reasons that Turkey has not been accepted into the EU.Finally he travels to Abkhazia, a generally unrecognised state within Georgia that is a popular destination for Russian tourists but has hardly any Western visitors.I liked the balance here of physical descriptions of places, encounters with local people, brief summaries of the history of each place, mouthwatering accounts of the food and wine of the region, and interviews with both native academics and passionate newcomers. There are towns that are dying, and others that are thriving, and Powell writes about both with compassion and optimism. There are some funny anecdotes, but he doesn’t let his own personality take over the narrative. I read this on the Kindle for iPad app, which meant I could easily see photos on Google images, and maps when I got lost. It all looks pretty stunning. It sounds like it is certainly not an easy holiday destination if you don’t speak Russian, but Georgia at least is on my travel bucket list now.My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.

If you plan to visit the South Caucasus, or merely hold an interest in a somewhat overlooked region, this is the book for you. It's true the world is starting to beat a path to Georgia, but how many people visit Armenia or Azerbaijan, let alone Nagorno-Karabakh - a territory that doesn't officially exist in the eyes of most of the world and yet for which people have died as recently as the last couple of years? Powell, 27 years a Reuters journalist, travelled through all these places in 2015 and 2016 by road, rail, on horseback and on foot. What we have here is no Michael Portillo travelogue, but an account that delves into the soul of a staggeringly beautiful region. Apart from vividly describing the mighty scenery, Powell takes us through Caucasian history from the early Christian period - Armenia says it became the first nation to adopt the religion officially in 301 - to the brutality of Stalin, a Georgian, and the chaos that followed the Soviet collapse. "The First Toast is to Peace" also examines the rich cultures and cuisines of the three South Caucasian nations - the title refers to the Georgian tradition of convivial but exhausting banquets presided over by a "tamada" or toastmaster. Much of the tale is told through the people Powell meets along the way and this turns up some surprises. For instance, Armenians apparently rather like Bashar al-Assad. The reason? Syrians were the first people to offer sanctuary to Armenians fleeing the Ottoman massacres of a century ago, according to Davit, a millennial Powell meets in Yerevan. Weakened by emigration and depopulation, Armenia has thrown its lot in with Russia. Georgia, by contrast, lost a war with Russia in 2008 and a fifth of its territory is controlled by pro-Moscow rebels. That includes another largely unrecognised place, Abkhazia, where Powell encountered not one visitor from west of St Petersburg during a 16-day stay. Powell insists he doesn't want to overanalyse his love for the region but is nevertheless at his best in the final chapter when he examines how Russia remains "the bear in the room". So whether you wish to make your first toast to peace or to God - the custom in some parts of Georgia - Powell's work is hugely enjoyable and enlightening. A great reference sheet for One Note. It is laminated and has held up very well so far. I refer to it now and thenand almost always remember what I did so I do not have to refer to it for the same thing again. It is well done

I've been using Microsoft Word for many years, but thought there might be a few tips I could pick up from this reference guide. However, that is not the case. I'll be passing it on to a friend who is more advanced than I. It's not really fair to downgrade the product because I can't use it, but I'd also like to save someone from making the same mistake.This reference guide covers Using Styles, Restricting Formatting, Creating a Table of Contents, Creating an Index, Inserting Excel Spread Sheets, Outlining, etc.I like the concept, and I'm sure my friend will be happy with it.

I wanted something that would be a quick and easy to use Excel 2010. I didn't want to have to thumb through a manual looking for what I wanted to know. This chart may not tell you everything, but it will tell you enough without using Power Point's help menu or a manual.

I finally moved from Windows XP to Windows 7 and Office 10, but with great trepidation. Much in the interface for Excel has changed; it seemed confusing and a step backwards. However, The Quick Reference Guide has been a huge help in my transition.

There's a lot of info packed onto a tiny sheet here. I learned a few new things and, I think once I get used to looking at it for information when I need it, it may be useful. I think these references are great for beginning users of a program, but I assume once I know it pretty well, these shortcuts, etc., will become second nature, and I won't need the reference so much. I use OneNote pretty often, in work and at home, and would really like to get better and better at it, so I'm finding this to be quite helpful!

Let's face it, Outlook is a complicated program with so many different facets that it's hard to learn, and even harder to remember. This quick reference guide was purchased for my wife who uses E-mail, Contacts, and the Calendar in a personal way (not for business). It is helpful as a crib sheet, and saves the time it would take to find the answer using MS's help system. I find myself referring to it occasionally even though I've been using Outlook since Microsoft brought it to market. Try it - You'll like it. The price is certainly right!

easy to use, not much fluff at all. The infromation is presented clear and concise and the best thing is that you can place it on your office desk and it will withstand coffee spills, stains and the occasional danish pastry crumb. Once you clean it off, it will look like you respect your office enough not to spill coffee and danish all over your materials. And all the while, you will have a great reference for when you forget how to properly set up that VLOOKUP function.

I got this "cheat sheet" for the 2010 version of Microsoft's OneNote program for my wife as a quick reference. It does include a number of the most basic features of the program, but I was not impressed overall. Quite of few of the features are not included on the sheet, and so it does not do the job of providing a quick reference to all of the capabilities of OneNote. The sheet itself is of nice quality; firm plastic laminate and quite legible. The OneNote program is a great tool for organizing a variety of subjects and both my wife and I both really enjoyed using the 2007 version of MS OneNote. The 2010 version is a substantial upgrade in capability as well as some changes in format, so I was hoping that a good quick reference guide would help ease my wife into the new version. Alas, the Intro Quick Reference Guide being reviewed is just too basic to be of much value.

I use these laminated sheets more as a quick reference guide than as a way to learn Excel. Nevertheless, I did learn a few new thing from it. There are two sheets with four sides of Excel information provided

What a phenomenal read. Stunning and absolutely brilliant read.I truly have never had a book that I resonated with more than The Idea of You. Robinne Lee was so on point with womanhood and relationships from a woman's point of view, from society's view, a mother's point of view. From a 40 year old woman's view. It was not viewed from rose coloured glasses nor was it cynical or jaded. Experience, intelligence, independence, and human nature framed this story.I was absolutely awed by Lee's writing. Poignant, simple, beautiful and real. Matter of fact even when matters of the heart are not such.The characters juxtaposed with a simplicity and normalcy that made the reader relate on a level parallel to our own lives alongside layers of intricacy that provided an intimate and almost complicit view into their lives... lives that most of us 'regular' folk could never fathom.This story had such balance with moments of reckless abandon and dire restraint. With snippets of political views and personal tastes. Interlaced with passion... not only passion for love and commitment but for life, for respect, for womanhood, for need and want.While this story was fictional and quite possibly fanfic, the author's words were never more real, raw, emotional and never rang truer to a woman's life than if I had read a biography or anecdotal memoirs.The Idea of You will forever be one of my top reads.D 5+++/5

4.5-5 stars. I could relate a lot to the heroine, Solene Marchand, in her current life chapter, even if there were times when I had difficulty warming up to her. She is recently divorced with a 12 year old daughter, Isabelle, and is co-owner of an art gallery in LA. She takes Isabelle to an August Moon concert in Las Vegas and meets the lead singer, Hayes Campbell, there. And whoa, Hayes is rather charming and attractive right from the get go. Being British only adds to his hotness and gentlemanly manners. He is also rather persistent and makes no apology for wooing Solene even though she's well aware of their obvious age gap. I loved the dialogue between them and it's obvious that Hayes knows how to navigate around the social arena in order to be the success that he is today, but he certainly isn't the typical celebrity musician, he has a very mature quality about him that is beyond his years to align well with Solene. And yet there's still this youthful quality to him that is a little bit oblivious compared to Solene's life experiences that come with time and age. What made this such a compelling read was how they embarked on this relationship, which started out as a fun attraction, and all of the obstacles that come with it because it's not glamorous at all. The author also injects other sociological arguments and attitudes regarding sexism and ageism that is still prevalent today. Watching Hayes and Solene enjoy the comfort and company they provide one another in bits and pieces while living everyday life is such a wake up call as to how a relationship like this is not easy to maintain, especially when it impacts other people, too. I could appreciate the realistic issues and storyline so when I reached the end, I had a lot of different topics to reflect on afterwards and will still be thinking about it in the days to come.

How do you write a review for a book that you've read back to back because you just couldn't stop thinking about these characters?I honestly don't think any words I can write will tell you the feelings these characters evoked in me. Honestly. And I've read the book twice now and thumbed through it a third time to relish in all the banter that was so perfect.Hayes and Solene. Solene and Hayes. A combination that I really didn't think could or would work, was a love story that was beyond. How can a nearly 20 year age difference and boy bander romance a successful divorcee and be GOOD at it??"This is insane. You realize that, right?" "Only if someone gets hurt." "Someone always gets hurt, Hayes."That should've been a clue as to the beauty and heartbreak of the story I was about to go on. I went into the story pretty blind and didn't know what to expect. But this behind the scenes into the world of the famous and the way we see ourselves as we grow older and how we are accepted through the media was just as big of a character as Hayes and Solene were. It is a constant in the background of their relationship.BUT what I loved and what I loved to go back and read again and again was the way they connected and listened to one another. Age did not matter. They just were and they just connected on a level that I didn't think was possible. Sure, their chemistry and intimate times were off the chart, but what made it that much better was the way they could talk to each other and want to know more and more about what made one another click. The witty banter and their obvious feelings you can grasp right through the pages was pure perfection and what I would want in a partner."You." "Me?" "You like me." he paused for a m moment upsetting our usual back and forth. "I love you," he said. without qualifiers, without conditions. He allowed it to sit there and wash over me.I'm still thinking about them and it's been nearly a month. And I still can't write a dang review that will tell you..YOU MUST READ this! You will feel all the feels. Your heart will beat again and your heart will break. You will laugh. You will smile and you will understand the reasoning behind all their actions. A very special love story that is not a traditional romance by any means. But it is a story of beauty and one I think everyone should read and experience. I could see this on the big screen for sure. The connection these two have is palpable and I want more of them. The writing is wonderful and the conversation between all the characters is flawless and believable. There is definitely more to write about with all these characters and I will be waiting for Robinne to write more of them. In the mean time, I will wait for the audio."Love, she said, was not always perfect, and not exactly how you expected it to be. But when it descended upon you, there was no controlling it."

Rating restaurants (and hotels) is a notoriously difficult business. No matter what you do, there will be some very valid criticisms. It is therefore truly remarkable how consistent and deservedly well-respected Michelin guides in Europe are. While nobody could agree with every rating, there is really nothing better, and hasn't been for a very long time.Unfortunately, the quality of the Guides decrease the further from Paris you go. The American ones are still quite usable, but are not as good as the competition. The Guides in Asia are hardly worth opening.The reviewers in Hong Kong and Macau were clearly not the best European reviewers period, but they were also still European, and so had difficulty reviewing any kind of Chinese cuisine. At the end of the day, Michelin simply ranked the places with established names high, and less famous ones low. Tastes may differ, but it is impossible to imagine that there exists a single person in the food-eating world that would give three stars to Robuchon in Macau while giving less to the ones in New York and Paris. And I don't think there is a single person who lived in Hong Kong for more than a year that would place Lung King Heen (a decent but very white-tourist-oriented restaurant in Four Seasons) as the top Cantonese restaurant in the city.This said, the guide follows famous touristy places rather well. If you are visiting Hong Kong for the first time, and have nowhere to turn for advice, this guide is probably better than nothing. You might end up spending more money, and eating much less well than you could, but at least you won't be completely lost. Which is the only reason I give this guide two stars rather than one.

Wasting food makes me feel like a garbage person. This book makes me feel like a food-saving SUPERSTAR. One of the best parts about this book is how Lightner goes into such detailed explanation about techniques for using every bit of produce, how to really make your groceries stretch and last, and how expiration dates actually work. Plus, the recipes are DELICIOUS. You have to make the shakshuka immediately.Before I read this book, I felt defeated by how much food my family wasted; we always had good intentions but so many times we just couldn't get it together. Lightner has helped me change the way I look at our groceries and meal-planning, plus how good waste impacts the world. I'm actually excited by the challenge of using every bit of what we buy. It's a small miracle.Buy this book for anyone in your life who values the environment, saving money, or even just cooking a delicious meal. They will LOVE this entire book.

This book has some great information on how to reduce food waste, if your goal is just reducing your waste output. I was hoping for more ways to use some of the scraps that are normally thrown away -- there are some, but I was looking for things I could use for our local food bank, not things that upper middle class families would use. This is not a "how to save money by using food scraps" book. And I don't really have a food waste problem, since I have dogs and chickens. So while this book would be great for some people, it wasn't a good match for me.

I just bought a second copy of this for a friend because I am so impressed with this book. Very well organized and comprehensive, this book is loaded with helpful hints from how to make apple juice without a juicer to tricks for freezing egg whites. There's a sensible discussion on when you can safely ignore pull-dates. Numerous delicious recipes including one of the most delicious shakshuka renditions I've ever tasted. Besides all of this, you can learn how to plant a garden from vegetable scraps. Highly recommended.

I'm guilty of overbuying food for my family all the time. I end up composting a lot, but would so much rather use some of the scraps/food waste towards making ... other food! Brilliant! The book is easy to understand, and the recipes are simple enough that I make some of them in a pinch, usually with other ingredients I already have. Love the quick tips too!
