From the Inside Flap

Ian McEwan's symphonic novel of love and war, childhood and class, guilt and forgiveness provides all the satisfaction of a brilliant narrative and the provocation we have come to expect from this master of English prose. On a hot summer day in 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a moment's flirtation between her older sister, Cecilia, and Robbie Turner, the son of a servant and Cecilia's childhood friend. But Briony's incomplete grasp of adult motives-together with her precocious literary gifts-brings about a crime that will change all their lives. As it follows that crime's repercussions through the chaos and carnage of World War II and into the close of the twentieth century, Atonement engages the reader on every conceivable level, with an ease and authority that mark it as a genuine masterpiece.

I received this book in the mail weeks ago. I had watched the movie first, had a range of emotions at the end that entailed shock, sadness, anger, resentment, and eventually acceptance...Thought I would order the book because books can lend so much more detail and backstory that a movie simply cannot.I love reading. I have read many different genres, and have even slugged away through Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series... and I thought Robert Jordan enjoyed his descriptions! But Robert Jordan's world was such that even though many passages and even in one case, an entire book were laborious to get through, I still re-read those books and have every single one of them.I have to say that usually when I get a new book, I finish it within a week, no matter how long it is. If it is really good, I will devour it in a few days.Well, it has been weeks that I have had this book and I haven't yet made it past part one. The part of the book I am currently on is where everyone has just gone out to search for the twins.I enjoy descriptions and feeling as though I am a part of the world the reader is trying to describe, but this novel is TOO wordy. So many adjectives and my eyes glaze over. Especially since I don't feel emotionally invested in really any of the characters because there is too much about everything else! When I read two pages about the sunset, all of it's colors, then in turn all of the colors it is turning the trees, leaves, and the surrounding areas and how if the character had just stood up and contorted their body in just the right way, then they would see these things that have just been described to me in full detail, I have a hard time really getting into the book. When there is so much description about the surroundings that several pages later the plot has not progressed, I start to think of other things I should or could be doing. And this is hard for me to admit, because I love reading.Reading should be an escape to another world where you don't have the voice in the back of your mind telling you about mundane household chores you should be doing!Sadly, though I want to like this book so rich in detail, it has too much detail. I will finish it, as I don't like to leave any book unfinished, but it will likely take quite some time, as I will read other books to take my mind off of the odious task of finishing Atonement.I will not be checking out anything else from this author.

I was completely absorbed by this book. The first part draws you into a confined setting, a very hot day in a country house and the preparations for welcoming the son of the house who is about to arrive with a friend. It lets you see the scene from the perspectives of the different characters in the house. Although McEwan focuses more on the internal lives of the characters than on external events, and devotes most of the attention to their impressions and reflections on what takes place around them, you feel the tension building steadily towards what certainly must become a disaster. The second part describes the dire consequences of these events, which grow out of the lively imagination of a young girl who half sees and half imagines what is happening in the house and tries, with good intentions, to put things right. McEwan ties everything together beautifully and elegantly in the last part where the young girl has grown old and has spent all the intervening years trying to reconcile herself with what she did as a child. I don't want to spoil anyone's reading experience by giving details. The book was rather different from what I had expected based on the descriptions, but it is certainly one of the better books that I have read. It is warmly recommended.

I found parts of the book heartbreaking, truly difficult to read. I enjoyed the author's lyrical writing very much. The words often were those I imagine Briony would have used. The book also taught life lessons, the least of which is to not speak about things you don't know or understand.

This was one of those novels I found brilliantly written, but incredibly boring.I had, probably, expectations way to high, so I was very disappointed with the book. It drags for an insufferable amount of time and when it comes to the big revelation it amounted to nothing. It works better in the movie, but even then, it had no impact in me.There are, of course, things that I liked and left me torn regarding the rating I would give this book. I loved the use that Ian McEwan makes of language. The way he masters long sentences, which is not very common in English language. I liked the idea of the different views of the same fact by the different characters and the way that propels the narrative, but I also thought that, in general, the book ended up being quite boring and excessively descriptive.

I've seen the movie a half dozen times and in between read the book twice. The movie experience has increased in emotional impact with each viewing. I first read the book a couple of years ago in paperback. I've just finished reading it a second time on Kindle. The Kindle reading was much better, taking notes, ranting about this and that was a pleasure missing in the book reading. The second reading completely overwhelmed me emotionally, it's difficult for me to say anything definitive. In the back of my mind lurked Rashoman, King Lear, Oedipus, Romeo and Juliet. And always there was opacity, a lack of clarity that added to the grief, compounded the tragedy. The novel within a novel only made things more horrific. It's all so thin, standing over the grave imploring the power of the almighty, so, so thin. But it's all we have, all Briony had.

I became aware of Ian McEwan through You Tube. He delivered the commencement address at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. His address was on free speech and impressed me. So, I decided to read one of his books, and chose Atonement. It was a good choice. The story took awhile to gain traction for me. However, I am an experienced enough reader to know a slow starter can turn out to be worth being patient which proved to be the case. Atonement is perfectly in step with the rich British literary tradition.

The Mystic Mandrake, by C.J.S. Thompson, 1968Written, I think, in the 1930's, but not published until 1968, this is likely the only book dedicated to the mandrake in the last 200 years. Why study the mandrake? Well, the plant happens to be one of the most mythologized plants in all history, with an abundant written tradition of use in religion, magic, medicine and fertility rites dating back about 3000 years to Egypt as well as the Assyrians. The mandrake has ancient traditions as an aphrodisiac, anesthetic, analgesic and intoxicant and is clear and undeniable in ancient folklore from the British Isles to China and everywhere in between. However, Thompson concludes that the only provable use of the mandrake is, in fact, the intoxicating and anesthetic evidence. He doesn't feel there is enough evidence to use it as an aphrodisiac or fertility inducer - though in their origin, the two, in my opinion, are probably one in the same, the manikins being a later addition to the myth.Though he discusses studies on other persons with the mandrake, it appears that he never tried it himself, preferring to refer to its "evil effects." His knowledge of things like entheogens is therefore obviously limited and prejudiced as he discusses "primitive superstition" - such as is typical with many Christian scholars of that era (and this), not recognizing their own beliefs as primitive superstition. The other draw backs of the book: I think he's too quick to dismiss some of the plant's other effects. See Dr. Christian Ratsch, and Jonathan Ott. I also dislike his habit of calling older cultures "primitive," etc. He also has a limited understanding of ancient fertility traditions - which would have greatly aided certain areas of this book. The layout of this book can be repetitive. It would probably have helped the book if he had laid it out by general themes instead of by geographical regions. His approach thus causes a heavy repetitiveness throughout as he discusses each geographical region. I feel this is unnecessary and easily avoided. However, I must also admit that for comparative analysis, this approach does do the job.Overall the book is a fascinating read, moving the reader a long swiftly one chapter to the next chapter. I received it in the mail at 5 pm. Read a few pages, then left; came back and read a few more; went out to dinner, then came home and read a few more, rapping the book up just after midnight. I spent all of maybe 3 or so hours reading its 245 pages. The book's oversized font also helps, and the fact that at the beginning of each chapter are three wasted pages (60 total). Also provided are many illustrations - several of which I'd not seen before. This is a very welcome addition to the ethnopharmacological library. A must have.4.3 Stars

This book written by an author closely associated with the western occult theories and practices brings together a wealth of information on a plant steeped in folklore and religious myths. While not a pharmacological book,in that it does not give dosages of the plant by weight,it still gives excellent descriptions of the effects of and the useage of this plant. That the author did not give the doseage is to be expected as wild or even cultivated plants can not be given exact dosage amounts considering the potency of the plant is dependent upon growing conditions i.e. excellent growing conditions would make for a more potent herb while lack of water, sun or soil nutrients would make for a less potent herb. Herbal medicine is not an exact science because of this fact. Also the author did not write the book solely to extoll the mind altering effects of the plant but to put into context the myth and mystery,to gather together information from obscure sources and present it in a readible fashion. Approaching this book from a metaphysical, historical or spiritual alternative view gives the reader an insight into the myth and historical use of the plant that can not be found in many other books.

Born to Win: Keeping Your Firstborn Edge without Losing Your Balance by Dr. Kevin Leman (author of The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are), originally released under the title The Firstborn Advantage: Making Your Birth Order Work for You is a brilliant book about the pros and cons of being a firstborn.I am pretty much the stereotypical firstborn - for good and for bad:Firstborns need permission to be able to relax. We struggle commonly with time management, stress management, and prioritizing because we tend to take on a lot . . . in fact, too much.Firstborns and Only ChildrenReliable and conscientious, they tend to be list makers and black-and-white thinkers. They have a keen sense of right and wrong and believe there is a "right way" to do things. They are natural leaders and achievement oriented.Believe it or not, people who have sloppy desks are sometimes more concerned with being perfect than people who appear on the surface to be neat and organized. The person who has the sloppy desk may be what I refer to as a "discouraged perfectionist." He wants everything in his life to be perfect, and because he knows it never can be, he tends to leave things half done or not done at all. In other words, he's afraid to attempt things that he knows he can't do perfectly.Firstborns are always ready to pitch in and help because they've been groomed to do so. They have a high sense of what's right and what's wrong. There's not a lot of gray in the black and white of a firstborn's world.Firstborns don't like surprises. They like things to be orderly and organized. If you're a pleaser, your motto in life is peace at any price. You bite off far more than you can chew. You're the type of person who would do anything for others while leaving nothing for yourself. You hold yourself responsible for other people's failures and negligence. Your goal in life is to make sure everyone is happy, because then, you reason, you count in life. So you run yourself ragged while trying to do favors for everyone else. Because you bail folks out of messes, people like you. You're a nice person. You can always be counted on, and people seem to know your soft spots. You spend every day running on a tankful of guilt. You're driven by that guilt because you know you can never do enough. You just can't seem to say no.Many parents tend to view their firstborn children as older than they really are. They expect them to grow up too fast.Firstborns are goal setters; they are well organized; they are the sort of people who know where they're going, how they'll get there, and how long it's going to take to get there.Dr. Leman's book will teach you how to make the most of your special abilities as a firstborn, while helping you cope with the things we are more prone to struggle with, such as perfectionism, saying no etc.

This is a very insightful read. Dr. Kevin Leman describes the reasons why first borns often suffer from the insurmountable pressure of being born first. He gives the reason for their tenacity, excellence, dominant characteristics, successes and failures, etc. This volume is a great read for not only those who are first borns, but also for people who are interested in learning more about their first born friend, parent, boss, co-worker, relative, spouse, etc.Dr. Leman not only shows the reasons behind first born temperaments, but he also gives practical insight on how to properly manage the pressure and responsiblity first borns face. This is a must read for first borns or people married to a first born. It is also a great read for those involved in counseling or psychology. I highly recommend it.

This audio cd is right on target. Dr. Leman, as usual, does an excellent job in pinpointing the myriad advantages of being the first born in the family. It is true that first borns which include us onlies are more mature, conscientious, and goal oriented than later born children.Dr. Leman is an excellent theorist and practician regarding birth order typology. However, I learned something new about the psychology of the first born-there are people with first born and/or only child characteristics although they were not technically the first borns in their respective families.I am an only and my mother is a first born. My mother was a typical first born-she loved being in charge and believed that she was always right. As a first born, she was often in conflict with superior staff because she believed that she knew more than they did. Even though we are close, we often clashed because of our strong personalities. I, too, believe that I am right and always gloat about it. I am also fiercely ambitious and believe in achieving the highest and if not, I would be miserable. The Firstborn Advantage is an excellent read and/or a good listen. It can be purchased in either book or cd form. Please purchase this enlightening treatise on the first born experience.

As I read through this book I kept thinking "Who is this man and how does he know me so well?"!If you are a firstborn you will find this book very enlightening. Dr. Leman has made birth order an area of research and study and he proves to be most knowledgeable on the subject. Although he refers to other birth orders in this book it is primarily focused on firstborns and their relationships with other birth orders and the world.Parents who read this book (preferably early in your parenting experience) will find it helpful as you relate to your firstborn and subsequent children. In addition to seeing myself with a new understanding I also found it enlightening in my understanding of my own (now adult) firstborn child.Dr. Leman has written an interesting book that does not bog down, it will keep you turning the pages as he explores how the firstborn child can develop their "edge" in school, work and home situations.

While Dr. Leman is persuasive, he wasn't persuasive enough. I know plenty of firstborns with all the personality traits of what he calls the firstborn that were late talkers, late walkers, late __. I'm not sure I buy that every single first born walks by 12 months, talks like a 4 year old at age 2, and is an overachiever in every area. I think Dr. Leman stereotypes "firstborns" (whether by birth order or his way of looking at first born) in a way that is unfair to a true firstborn that just may be a late developer. I think it's helpful to read the book for a broader scope of knowledge, but I would remain skeptical of jumping in hook, line, and sinker.
