I bought this book partly because it had so many positive reviews. I was pretty shocked when I got it because the book has been almost useless for me. Virtually none of the designs in this book are historically accurate or reference actual manuscripts, they seem to be 'inspired' by history instead. The aesthetic of almost every single illumination is the same - floral motifs with pastel colors that look like cheap designs off thrift store China plates. There isn't one page in this book that shows historical examples or attempts to recreate them, most of the designs look like 1800's Neoclassical interpretations of illumination. A lot of the designs are heavily inspired by French Books of Hours from the 15th century but none of the designs in the book are as delicate or impressive as the real deal. If you're looking for historical accuracy or a detailed guide for how to create illumination then you should definitely skip this book.

Although [the price] seems hefty for a paperback book, you won't think that after seeing it. It is filled with color photos and helpful diagrams of the incredibly beautiful, complete with step-by-step directions to almost ensure success. Best of all, it is helpful for many other arts as well, since the information about coloring, centering, decorating letters, composing a monogram, etc. can be applied just as well to numerous other arts. I really love this book; it is unbelievably gorgeous and inspiring, with such great directions that even I should be able to do this successfully. Even if you're not a calligrapher, this will greatly help you should you decide to give it a try -- and will also help even if you use computer fonts, just want to frame and display treasured quotes or invitations, etc. I have nothing to do with the author, publisher, or anyone involved with this book ... I just took a chance and ordered it, and am thrilled beyond words with it. HIGHEST possible recommendation.

I don't know how to do calligraphy and I don't think you need to with this book. This book spends a lot of time on the illumination of the the letters and the borders. I do a lot of drawing and always wanted something a little different to use in my backgrounds and/or titles and this book really gave me a great place to find ideas and inspiration. If you do calligraphy, this is a great and I think must have book. If you don't you can still get a great deal out of it and think it really belongs in any artists library.

I bought this as a gift for a illumination craft person and she adores the book. Provides inspiration into the various letters used in manuscript illumination. Excellent resource for the reference library.

I am a calligrapher and one of the things I have always wanted to do was to use illumination. I am presently working on a project and I believe by using illumination lettering would add the topping to the project. In the book the colors are vivid, the "how to" is really easy to understand, thus adding to the endless possibilites. My drawing is not so top notched :(, but I can draw the simple flowers, banners and vines that are shown in the book,and with that type of help, it would take my projects to an even higher level. This book is very limited in scope and style. There are many good examples of drawing (nearly identical) vines with little flowers but almost nothing else besides examples of what to do with your vines and flowers. I really expected more from this book due to the good reviews it received.

A beautiful book, with lots of lovely examples of illuminated letters. The examples are inspiring, the instruction thoughtful and encouraging.

Please, if you're a parent or adult looking to buy something for a loved child in your life, DO NOT BUY THIS!First, this joke book contains no jokes. No puns, no play on words, no irony, no nothing that could be objectively be called humor. The book reads more like an instruction manual.For example (this is actually in the "joke" book):What happened to the player who encountered two creepers?He was destroyed!That "joke" is just like all the rest. It sets up an event, and then tells you the most likely conclusion to that event. If you were reading that as an instruction manual you could figure out that "creepers" probably explode or are very dangerous. So, if you want a round-about way of learning the game mechanics, by all means, get this book.To end I'll post a couple more "jokes" to prove my point:Did you hear about the player that tried to put a saddle on a creeper?He went boom!(For some reason "He went" was in italics and "boom" was not. Not sure what that's supposed to mean)Did you hear about the player who was killed by a skeleton?He respawned!("Respawning" just means you end back up at your bed after you die in game. So in other words this "joke" says "What happened when the player died? The same thing that happens every other time you die!)

Since reading this classic in American Literature, I have achieved enlightenment. The positioning of the words in each sentence, the sheer articularity, is impeccable. Since reading this novel I have seen the face of God and achieved Nirvana. My charisma and comedy skills have increased ten-thousandfold. I now have an IQ of 1.4x10^32. The universe simply bends to my will.When I first purchased this book, the era when I was mortal, I foolishly had not expected much. However, when I sat down in my 8th grade English class, and read the first joke, my mind became one with the Universe. My eyes went glazed, and every female in the classroom turned to me, as they smelled the greatness of my genetics and male pheromones through the air.The teacher turned to me and asked if I had something to say. I simply read the joke that I saw first when opening a random page.“Did you hear about the player that was so freaked out that when she was attacked by a few mobs, she forgot to use her sword?*what a noob*”These mere mortals, not reading the words on paper, missed out on the joke’s elegance and humor. Until, I heard a kid next to me laugh out loud, producing sound waves at a frequency of 790 Hz exactly. I turn, looking for the genius in the classroom who can grasp such humor. The kid?Albert Einstein.

I bought it part out of irony, and part to torture my friends. Works pretty well on both ends. If there's an awkward silence while we're skyping or something, I like to pull it out, flip to a random page and make things even more awkward, but much louder as we all half laugh and grown in disgust and confusion.

I bought this book hoping to find something that would help me break out of a deep depression that has plagued me since the death of my husband. To say that this is book, nay, this work of art is not only hilarious but sincerely heartwarming would be an understatement. This piece of literature will find itself in the classics, right alongside of 1984, The Catcher in the Rye, Dracula, and many others. I cleared off an entire bookshelf just to ensure that this fantastic book would not be damaged by other less worthy books (I'm looking at you, Harry Potter) when being placed on the shelf as well as be the key set-piece of literary genius that others might see when first entering my home. This book has radically altered the way I view the world and will forever hold a place in my heart as well as mind.

A great read that provides snapshots into everyday life around Honduras. Well written, and it brings back memories of my own trip down there.

Great read!

Having shared many of the same experiences as Jim, I can attest that he give a very realistic idea of life in rural Honduras. His way of writing brings out the innocence of a country struggling to become self-sustaining while in the grips of mass corruption and poverty. There is a lawlessness in the land of Olancho that reminds me of a time in our country's history. People were moving west and the wild times of robbers and thieves taking advantage of the less fortunate, farmers trying to eke out a life when nature isn't always favorable, and no laws or people available to enforce the law. Honduras is a beautiful country and the people we got to know during our two years of Peace Corps service are beautiful as well. Whispers of Honduras: A Peace Corps Perspective is a display of how humanity has touched others and how those others have touched humanity.

I've been to Honduras and the places that Murren writes about are places that most people who go to Honduras will never experience. This is not your Costa Rica travel guide for tourists from the States going down for a week to 'experience Central America'. It's a real account of someone who spent a couple of years living and working with the campesinos in one of the most tragically beautiful and poor countries in our hemisphere. I highly recommend this for any prospective Peace Corps Volunteer or anyone else who is curious about life outside of the United States.

Mr. Murren paints a captivating picture of his time in Honduras. In a classroom setting, this book would be an excellent supplement to any social science curriculum especially when opening students eyes to opportunities for service that are open to them around the world. I would recommend this book for middle school and high school teachers looking for engaging, real world content.

As a middle-school teacher, I found this book to be an excellent asset to our world culture study. The students were able to read this book as a supplement to our unit on world social issues and global differences. We all enjoyed the readability and genuine approach Mr. Murren takes on in his writing. We look forward to reading more in the coming weeks.

What a great book, tells a story that not many of us will ever get to experience. I felt like I was right beside him the entire time.

This is an important book, in that the author’s discovery of the (so far as is is currently known) unique language feature of the Piraha Indians, non-recursive sentence structure, shows an effect of culture on language strong enough to make the Chomskyan “universal grammar” theory appear to be less than universal.I found the book a fascinating account of a USA born linguist and Christian missionary given an extremely difficult challenge, to decipher an isolated language of an Amazonian jungle people and then translate the New Testament into their language. Which translation, after he had learned their language, turned out to be impossible. Not only were these happy, independent (dangerous if drinking alcohol) people unimpressed with religion, their effect on the author caused him to abandon blind faith in favor of trusting his perceptions and reason.Dr Everett provides an exciting, astounding account of the Pirahas, their daily lives, and his life living among them with his wife and three children, especially their life-changing effect on him. He also goes into much detail about the difference between his changed views about the relationship between grammar, culture, and human ‘grammar instinct’. I’m not that interested in the fine points of linguistics, but I could see how being aware of such could be valuable in examining other little-known languages and avoiding errors through theory-bias.For me the anthropological descriptions and information of these unique Piraha, all 300 or so of them, made this a worthwhile read. The difficult linguistics discoveries very interesting, as well as the author’s struggle with his beliefs and the eventual triumph of reason over blind faith. It could have been edited for a smoother read, but that would be nitpicking when I think of what torture the author went through, eg, clouds of mosquitos and other biting insects, ubiquitous 3-inch long cockroaches, tarantulas, snakes, crocodiles, jaguars, 110 degree humid heat, malaria which almost killed his wife and a daughter, dangerous confrontations with Brazilian traders,etc.in this heroic project.

Frankly, i don't understand some of the negative commentary here. I had to force myself to put the book down from time to time.The more I study, the more convinced I am that we humans haven't only accumulated information over the millennia, we've quite literally taught ourselves how to think. Not just what to think, but how to think. Everett's book underscores that conviction for me. Here we have a group of people who intentionally don't want contact with the rest of the world and whose very thinking is so strange to us as to make us wonder whether they might in fact be imports from some other planet. (I, of course, don't mean the "other planets" seriously.) The Piraha don't think like most of the rest of the world thinks, often not even at very low levels.What can you make of a culture that has no numbers at all and apparently can't learn them? How about a culture with no sense of history and no projections for the future? They have no words for colors or for the simple concepts of "left" and "right." While I certainly wouldn't want to live among them, they apparently are so satisfied with their lives that centuries of attempts to evangelize them have fazed them not in the slightest. The missionary's expectation that something about the Gospel will inevitably resonate with any human heart is thus proven to be unfounded. This fact so discombobulated Everett that he eventually abandoned his own faith.No, this isn't a novel. In fact, it's not even a simple story. It shouldn't be read that way. And, yes, it can get a little technical toward the end. (Seriously, somebody here had the nerve to say that Everett, who chairs the linguistics department at Illinois State University and who holds a PhD in the subject doesn't know what he's talking about?) But if you're as fascinated as I am by, well, humanness, I think you'll have a hard time putting the book down, too.

Extremely interesting as anthropology, and not enough of that. Some of the linguistics discussio0n were difficult to follow but interesting. The chapter on the relationship between language and culture was very interesting: if you become truly bilingual, then you are also bicultural and switch cultures when you switch languages. I've seen that happen in other polyglots, and I've sometimes experienced it myself. I also wanted to know more about why Everett rejected his religious beliefs. It must have been difficult. I rejected all of mine when I was in my mid-teens and realized that it didn't matter what I believed in: the world still turned and nothing changed except the way I perceived it. I want to read more of Everett's work.

I liked this book even though I'm not a linguist or an anthropologist. What it comes down to is that this man, Dr. Daniel L. Everet, spent time with people he meant to change, and instead, because he was truthful with himself, allowed them to change him. It's really quite lovely. Also, you will learn about the people of the Amazon, which is fascinating. Our culture is caught up with ideas like mindfulness, which we try to insert into our lives. But to really be mindful, it seems that your entire culture, including your language, need to reflect a state in which the past and future are meaningless, and that all that matters is the present. That there are such people existing today is a wonder.

I could not put this story down and I read it in one long sitting. It was the first of his books I have read ( I found out about him from an article in Harpers magazine by Tom Wolfe)This true story should be a Hollywood movie..I kept visualizing a young Tom Hanks.I'm now a committed fan of Everetts work. I've learned a lot and shifted my view on quite a few aspects of culture, languages, cognition, etc.And that's an amazing anagram btw, my review title.

This is a great book for those looking to develop an intuition around electricity and related practical applications. I come from an Ivy league background, computer science with some light EE classes. I've been tinkering in the house with electrical work, and realizing I lacked the grounding I want for understanding how things work together. I initially looked at the online courses from MIT and others. Several thousand greek letters and formulas later, I was feeling refreshed on my calculus and algebra, but no better at figuring out what the white wire does in my light switch :) I also looked at some electrician practitioner courses online, but they all seemed to start with things like "this is how you use a linesman plier", something I'm comfortable with, and way too slow for the crash course I'm interested in. This book was a nice happy medium...I also purchased a codebook explanation alongside this, that I've yet to crack the spine on.

This will most likely be THE best money you'll ever spend for a high quality refresher on basic electricity. The author, Milton Gussow, does an absolutely outstanding job covering the fundamentals with enough detail and clarity to make this a definite "go to" reference manual for the electrician, the technician, or the field engineer.Rather than listing the topics, I strongly suggest all potential buyers utilize the "Search inside this book" application. Reading through the Table of Contents will give you a good feel for the subject matter and how it is laid out. A cursory read of the those portions of text that are provided in the search application will give you a good understanding as to how the author clearly and concisely presents each subject. And, reading through the Index gives ample reference to those topics you most likely would want to look up on the spur of the moment.I highly recommend this is book!

Have an open mind and delve into this masterpiece.

Lovely graphics but a weak and ungraceful translation.

I have read the Tao Te Ching more than once, and find it very difficult to understand. Nevertheless, I keep trying to understand this book, as I am interested in the thinking behind movements that have affected the world and its cultures. I was optimistic that Sean Michael Wilson's added illustrations might help me take in the words more easily. You may consider it user error, but it didn't work. While some of the illustrations were helpful, others seemed to have nothing to do with the pages surrounding them.Tao Te Ching is just as much a mystery to me now as it was before I read this version. Perhaps, for me, it is meant to remain so.Many thanks to NetGalley and Shambhalla Publications for giving me another opportunity to learn these lessons. All opinions expressed are strictly my own.

A wonderful read for anyone thinking about nursing school, just about to begin their nursing program, or in their first semester! It is a practical and straight forward read. It gives test taking tips, tips on how to deal with instructors, great communication ideas and tips on how to choose a school. If you are a student going for your masters or doctorate in nursing this book probably would not apply to you because you already know how to survive nursing school! :)

This book is full of tips for studying, and on how to juggle the stress of relationships and studying. It is more about studying than nursing. Anyone who has studied at the college or university level before will have a good handle on these practices, and be aware of the pitfalls. For them, the book is a waste of time. For those who have not studied at a higher level institution before will find it very helpful. It is written from the perspective of someone entering a 4 year bachelor program, and less for 2 year students who have already studied for their pre-requisites. Although many examples say they are from "technical school graduates" you can see that they assume no knowledge of study habits. Both my wife (the student) and I read it, and found it this way - we both have degrees in other programs.

I definetely see myslef referring back to this book again and again, a truly great investment.

About the Author

Maxim D. Shrayer, a bilingual author, scholar and translator, is Professor of Russian, English, and Jewish Studies at Boston College and Director of the Project on Russian & Eurasian Jewry at Harvard’s Davis Center. Born in Moscow in 1967 to a writer’s family, Shrayer emigrated to the United States in 1987. He has authored and edited fifteen books in English and Russian, among them the internationally acclaimed memoirs Leaving Russia: A Jewish Story and Waiting for America: A Story of Emigration, the story collection Yom Kippur in Amsterdam, and the Holocaust study I Saw It: Ilya Selvinsky and the Legacy of Bearing Witness to the Shoah, and the travelogue With or Without You: The Prospect for Jews in Today’s Russia. He finishes up with some reasonable policy proposals straight out of the Free Marketer's handbook, such as means-testing for Social Security or lower taxes on investments.This book is non-partisan in a good sense, namely that it shows how we've all--left and right alike--stood by as our culture dissolved around us. His advice, if followed, would make life better for people, and would also make us better people. And this last point is the key to the book, namely that economics is not just anothersocial science, it is a moral enterprise.Like a medieval apologist, Brooks defends the faith. In fact, he follows the general form of inquiry used by Thomas Aquinas and other defenders of the faith: begin with a list of objections, state the principle(s) involved, then answer the objections. A reasonable opponent of free markets might argue that such trade arrangements areat best amoral and very often immoral. Further, free markets are unfair. Finally, Good Samaritans have to clean up the wreckage caused by free markets.Brooks contends that Earned Success is the main driver of true human happiness. The sad fates of many lottery winners demonstrates this point: we value what we earn more highly than we value a random gift. And the effort it takes to earn something makes us better, doesn't it? A properly-regulated free market, therefore, is fairer than a managed one, and it produces the wealth that Good Samaritans use. Thus the objections are countered effectively, and the case for free enterprise is made. Good work.Unfortunately, this book will not get a serious public policy hearing anytime soon, and that's the problem with Brooks' approach. The best way to argue against the downward fiscal spiral we're in is calmly and reasonably,as Brooks does. Paul Ryan tried that method in the Vice Presidential debate late last fall, and was ridiculed by Vice President Biden, though Joe offered no coherent message of his own. That, sadly, is the state of the debate in 2013.Like the patient who won't listen to the doctor, we've decided things are just fine the way they are.So, read this book and put it away where you can find it in a few years, when the next bubble bursts. At that point, Arthur Brooks will look like a prophet. Perhaps, if we're lucky, the patient won't be so sick at that point that the cure will mean years of pain.

The first several chapters where the author argues why people are better off free is quite good, if a bit short.Once he gets into his recommendations for where the government should be involved are rather poor.It seems to me, a libertarian, that this book should be very well liked by conservative readers.If you are a democrat or independent and you are interested in why republicans think the way they do, then I suggest reading this book to understand why people are better off with less government. Even if you disagree, you will find value in this book.If you are a libertarian, then understand that his argument is that righties should be making a moral case for freedom, not a case based solely on facts and statistics.

Very enlightening while offering information that I was unaware of and needs to be inclded in WWII history in schools

This is an excellent book that every american should read. It is very well researched.

Brooks effectively makes the case that Free Enterprise is the "moral high ground" vs. a society in which government plays a larger and larger role. I strongly recommend this to people who want a constructive message to share with those who judge success as "unfair."

It is always gratifying to read a book whose ideas mirror perfectly one's own. I am worried about the direction our country has taken, particularly in the last three years, and want to know what I can do to alter the course of events. Unfortunately, most people who will read this book from cover to cover are already on board the free enterprise train. The author states early on that this is not about who's in the White House or even about the outcome of future elections, since most of our problems are bipartisan in nature. Presenting a moral argument in favor of free enterprise is a good thing, but I question how many of those who think big governement is the answer are interested in listening.
