From the Inside Flap

"Richardson's rich and extensive book on Ralph Waldo Emerson is a guide to the fire that burned always at the center of Emerson's life. . . . To read this book is to be touched on the shoulder by a thousand years of poetry and thought. . . . For those who would understand Emerson, it is unforgettable; it is essential."―Mary Oliver, Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry"Emerson himself would surely have applauded Robert Richardson's monumental study, which treats the sage's thought not as a set of coldly reasoned propositions but as the continually shifting outcome of a struggle to surmount crisis and tragedy. In the process, Richardson has fashioned our most credible portrait of a vulnerable, driven, fully human Emerson."―Frederick Crews, author of The Sins of the Father"The best biography I have read in years. Mr. Richardson is just the splendid writer Emerson has long deserved, and he makes the story great-hearted, inclusive, intellectual, and inspiring. I was enthralled."―Edward Hoagland"A superb work . . . that will quickly come to be regarded as the definitive biography of Emerson. . . . Richardson's greatest achievement is to restore for us the emotional and passionate element of Emerson's life and personality, and to make us understand how significant an element that was. . . . He brings a very complex and interesting man―not just a thinker―to life."―David M. Robinson, author of Emerson and the Conduct of Life"Scholars and general readers alike will return to this comprehensive and painstaking study for a long time to come."―Joel Porte, editor of Emerson's Essays"The most readable biography of Emerson ever written and also one of the best from a scholarly standpoint."―Lawrence Buell, Harvard University"In this magnificent study Emerson stands before us not only as the embodiment of his 'American Scholar' but also as a human mind. Richardson's Emerson is one whom we want to reread, but, more important, also whom we want to know as a friend and mentor."―Philip F. Gura

This is simple an amazing biography. It of course gives the details of Emerson's life, but it also help get into the mind of Emerson. I respected him before, but now, even more so. He is a real person to me now, and I feel as though I knew him. The book shows the changes in his life, and we can see and relate to this, based on our own changes as we go through life. The avid reader that Emerson was, is shared here it great detail. I have no idea how many books are mentioned, but it's likely in the hundreds. There are summaries of the books' contents, and how they might have appealed to Emerson. I find it a great launch point for future books to explore. And these would be considered very obscure by today's standards. So this great book - beyond exploring the life of RW Emerson - is also the perfect launchpoint for discovering other books and authors. And these are just ordinary ones, they are the great thinkers of yesteryear. If only people would learn more about these wonderfully deep individuals.

I've greatly enjoyed reading this Emerson biography. I've always preferred Thoreau to Emerson (and still do) but reading about his life has given me a new appreciation for Waldo. I guess I'm more of a realist or materialist than idealist or transcendentalist but I still like reading these guys, as much for their style as for the content of their thoughts. Richardson also wrote "Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind," which is an intellectual biography that doesn't too much go into the everyday details of Henry's Life. "Mind on Fire" is more of a general biography yet still emphasizes what Emerson read, what and how he thought. I highly recommend both books by this author.

This book yields a lot of great insights and information, but I would recommend skipping around and skimming for the parts that speak to you. Emerson actually suggests reading books that way and I found it helpful to read this book that way because the Author did a great job of compiling information about the life of Emerson and frankly there will be things you probably won't care to read or remember. On the other hand there will be things you will like a lot, so it's worth the money and effort.

Mr. Richardson's 'Thoreau A Life of the Mind' was not only the best biography I've read on Thoreau, but one of the most exhilerating and enlightening reading experiences of my life. So I decided to read his 'Emerson The Mind on Fire.' And it was every bit as intimate and intelligent. There are times you feel that you're intruding upon Waldo and Henry on one of their walks. It was an endless stroll of two intellectuals and humanists on the path of being very human. Each of the one hundred chapters (both books) are kept short, which helps move the reader from topic to topic without ever feeling put upon (too much detail can drag what is otherwise very interesting.) Though, for me personally, I would love to savor every moment these two great men shared. I don't think I could ever get bored.Emerson has many close friends with whom one gets to know intimately. His personal address book was a whose whose of literary and intellectual greats. The relationship between Emerson and his second wife, Lidian, is of great interest. She was also intellectual and as much a partner in life as she was a wife. Her presence is everywhere in Emerson's life.Emerson's essays are pure poetry. And the behind the scene snippets into how they became a part of his legacy was both insightful and relevant to the day to day interactions and causes he committed himself. His transformation from the unremarkable child into the neverending 'student' of self-education and commitment to social conscience throughout his entire adult life is one to be admired.Mr. Richardson is one of the best biographers of nineteenth century literaries. He is truly one with his topic.

Robert Richardson's biography of Emerson is superb. Though, as Richardson reminds us, Emerson did not like superlative language when precise and adequate language would do, it is the case that at times the superlative, the precise and the adequate converge (as, in fact, they often did in Emerson's writings). Richardson's biography is indeed superb in its unfolding of Emerson's life -- the loves, the friendships, the losses, the intellectual and spiritual hunger, the religious quest, the writers in America, in Europe, in Persia and elsewhere to whom Emerson owed and acknowledged debts, the grasping at and for a world, the determination of a single, brilliant human being to find his way and to see his life, and all individual lives, as imbued with the divine and thus worth living. The book is also superbly written. Each short chapter offers enough substantive insight to urge the reader into the next. It is a long book, but not long-winded. Richardson provides the reader with some morsel of insight in a few pages of narrative, and then offers a rest to digest what has been said. His placement of quotations from Emerson's journals, essays and other works is brilliant, offering the reader a useful sketch of Emerson's metaphysics and ethics. In my own case, this has allowed time to reach for other literature more fully descriptive of the events or scenes offered in a particular chapter, or to reread chunks of Emerson's writings while moving through the biography. The book is a useful tool not merely for a study of Emerson's life but for a study of Transcendentalism and of the interplay of ideas across the Atlantic that shaped American thought in so many ways. One sees more clearly where and how such writers as Nietzsche and Thoreau obtained the seeds of their own truths from Emerson's works and thoughts.Richardson has set the standard for the writing of future biographies. Again, simply superb.

The Program, by Suzanne Young

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up-Four years ago, teen suicide became an epidemic, affecting one in every three teens. To combat it, a school district in Oregon developed "The Program," where teens are treated for their depression by erasing their memories and secluding them from their peers. As an increasing number of her classmates are taken away for treatment, 17-year-old Sloane Barstow knows better than to show emotion to anyone other than her boyfriend, James, especially since her brother drowned himself two years earlier, leaving her parents constantly on edge. But when her friend commits suicide and James is taken away, Sloane begins to slip into a depression that forces her into The Program, where she is gradually stripped of all memories of James and her past. As she struggles to start over, she finds herself questioning the integrity of The Program and why she is inexplicably drawn to a troublemaker named James. The story is intriguing, and while a little slow at times, teens will find themselves racing to the finish to see what happens to Sloane and James. Young has created strong characters that readers will fall in love with and has developed a captivating world that will not soon be forgotten. Recommend this one to fans of Lauren Oliver's Delirium and Veronica Roth's Divergent (both HarperCollins, 2011).-Candyce Pruitt-Goddard, Hartford Public Library, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Imagine that suicide is a contagious condition affecting only teenagers. The early warning signs are negative emotions, depression, and despair, and infected teens are driven quickly to the point where they can think of nothing but suicide. This is Sloane’s world. She watched her beloved brother kill himself before her eyes. If not for the love of her boyfriend, James, Sloane is sure that she would kill herself, too. But she and James have vowed to each other that they will fight the disease, and love and comfort each other through grief. Teens seen demonstrating negative emotions are reported to The Program, where they receive the cure for the suicide infection but at a terrible cost. When Sloane finds herself swept into The Program, she realizes with a growing dread that everyone seems to know more than she does. Readers will devour this fast-paced story that combines an intriguing premise, a sexy romance, and a shifting landscape of truth. With big questions still unanswered and promising twists, this first volume in a new series will leave readers primed for more. Compare to Lauren Oliver’s Delirium or Ally Condie’s Matched series. Grades 10-12. --Diane Colson

The Program was one of my Beat the Backlist challenge books, since it’s been on my TBR list since 2014, and it really hit home for me, so it actually took me a while to finish the book even though I loved it.The Program is set in the not-so-distant future in a world where suicide has become an epidemic. Those under the age of 18 are closely monitored for signs of “infection” (aka: depression) and if they are displaying the signs, they are taken to The Program, where their memories are erased and they are “cured”.Seventeen year old Sloan lost her older brother to suicide, which makes her high risk herself. All Sloan wants is to make it to 18 so she doesn’t have to worry about The Program anymore – to her, losing her memories of her brother, friends, and boyfriend is a fate worse than death. When Sloan ends up being sent in for treatment, she vows to fight every step of the way.I really loved The Program, and the concept when you think about it is incredibly sad for so many reasons. The thought that anyone under the age of 18 basically has no control or say over their own minds, memories, and thoughts is horrifying. They are expected not to grieve for losses because otherwise they might get flagged for being sick. They have to live their lives walking on eggshells and hiding their emotions. In addition, the thought that anyone could intentionally change/remove someone’s memories against their will is terrible. That seems like such a violation, I can’t imagine living in that constant fear that something like that would happen to me!Now, I’m about to get a little personal. The topic of suicide hits really close to home for me, and in the beginning of the book, one suicide is retold through memories and another happens in real time. I cried through both. I was diagnosed with depression in 2003 and started medication for it, and in 2007 when I was 17, I attempted suicide. I can relate to the feeling of complete and utter hopelessness that makes you feel like ending your life is the best option. In addition to my own suicide attempt, I’ve lost two friends to suicide – one in 2006 and one in 2015, so I can also understand how helpless and guilty you feel when you learn that a friend took their own life, so through the first part of the book I really related to the characters in every sense of the word, and I kept getting super emotional about it and taking breaks from reading. I still struggle with depression and anxiety, but overall am doing well and am in a good place, so no worries there.Okay, so enough about me and back to the book. Aside from the book being written really well and triggering a lot of emotions in me, I loved the characters. I adore Sloan and her boyfriend James. They had such a cute relationship and I loved how it felt like they were only completely comfortable and open around each other, and no one else. My heart broke with they both went thorough The Program and had their memories altered. The book leaves off on a little bit of a cliffhanger, so I’m dying to read book two so I can see what happens with them! I have a lot of unanswered questions, and I’m hoping everything gets wrapped up in the next book.Overall, I adored the book and recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the YA genre. There’s some action, lots of emotion, great friendships, a strong heroine, and great romance! It was a 5 star book for me!

This book was recommended to me by a friend, so I thought I'd check it out. I ended up reading the entire thing in one afternoon (about 5 hours). Overall it is very energetic and gripping. The story progresses at a decent pace, and is filled with love, drama and suspense. The way it builds out the characters, their stories, then washes it all away, leaving us, the readers as the only ones who really know the full history is really unique and interesting. Reading as the characters then struggle to understand and adapt to their new realities. The open discussion of suicide, depression, mental health and medications were particularly interesting, and I feel like it would resonate particularly well with teens. The Program is a dystopian idea but the way it is implemented in this story makes it very believable, as if it could become an actual future.I took off a single star only because the romance is a little cliche and because the book doesn't really stand up on it's own. The ending leaves you hungry for the sequel and the epilogue really throws everything you thought you understood out of wack. I think a lot of the questions and uncertainty will be answered or at least addressed by the second book, which I've been told is the best of the series. I start on that one today :)

I had such high hopes for this book. I breezed through this in 2 days and while I enjoyed reading this, I kept wanting it to take a turn into a much deeper, complex world than it actually was. I think I had such high hopes and if I were to write this novel, I would have taken it to a much different direction and here's why and how.PLEASE BE AWARE OF SPOILERS AHEAD!!!In part 2 of the book, when Sloane was in The Program, Realm was introduced. I wished so much to get to know Realm. He was dark and kind of a jerk and we don't know why. But I wanted more from him. Secretly, I wanted him to be the main protagonist and we as a reader don't really know whether he's really on Sloane side or working for The Program. Especially after in Part 3 when it was revealed that he loved Sloane, it was just really hard to believe that he fell in love with her only from knowing her in the Program. What I really wanted was for Realm to have had a past with Sloane and that later on revealed that both Realm and Sloane to have gone through the Program more than once. So both of their memories were wiped before and that the book began with Sloane and James but it was 2 years after she's gone through the Program which erased her memories of Realm. I wanted Realm to have somehow found the purple pill, took it and his memories started to come back. Hence he's infiltrated the Program and wanted to help Sloane from the inside. I also wanted Sloane and Realm then to work together from the inside to find out why the Program exists and why teenagers are getting this "disease". I think what bothers me most if that there's actually no explanation as to why this world has become this way, which I feel is kind of just a cop out for the author. It's like she didn't think about it so why write about it. But readers want to know!!! Anyway, I wanted a "big bad" and there wasn't one. It would have been nice to have them end this first book with Realm, James, and Sloane on the run just kind of like how it ended in the actual book and the next book will all be about how the three of them come to expose the people behind the program.I didn't like James as much as I thought I would. I wanted to like him but just couldn't feel for him as much. If this book went in the direction I wanted, I still thought there could have been a love triangle, but if done well, James could have still been a great person and had a happier ending in the end but have Realm and Sloane have a much deeper back story. Also, what really didn't work for me was that most of the part 3 part of the book was us as readers going on a journey with Sloane to piece together her memory. Memory that we already know because we read about all of it in part 1. I think this approach is rather a waste of time and I wished for more mystery and intrigue rather than watching someone retrace their steps.Ugh I just had such high hopes for this book. I could have been so much better and just wanted it to work so badly! Oh well! I have book 2 but I don't know if I'm looking forward to reading that at all!!!

Nothing against the authors of the books but the Publisher Packt. All these "books" with this cover format are actually written specifically for a online learning database, so the pictures in the book are really small and the project files mentioned in the text aren't included with the Amazon purchase. It's like the publisher just went through each lesson and converted the pages to PDF, then turned them into books to sell on Amazon.

It is a great book that if you are just starting Unity. Also, it has some contents valid to the old user who had never touched Unity after 5 released. There is a good solution how to handle UI stuffs and optimizing.

I received this book today on time (yes, on a Sunday!). These drawings are so beautiful and I love watching Dea's YouTube videos. There are 2 "copies" of each drawing, giving opportunities to try different color schemes for the same scene as well as different sets of my colored pencils. I was surprised to find 2 drawings in grayscale (which I've been curious about anyway). Another drawing is included 4 times (2 plain, 2 in grayscale). Once I start a page, I may add an update.Update: I started this page (bird not finished yet though!). These are full-page drawings and not perforated. Personally, it's MUCH easier to remove the page I'm working on, which I did easily with my X-Acto knife. These beautiful drawings make you feel like an artist even when you are not! ☺️

What an amazing book!! This is my first book by this artist and I love every page in it!! It has such beautiful scenery with the cutest animals such as mice, squirrels, cats and even our winged friends including birds, seagulls, butterflies and dragonflies. There are 20 unique pictures to color and there is even a duplicate set to color again using a different color scheme. The pages are all single-sided on standard weight paper as provided by Createspace and are non perforated. I recommend using a backer page when coloring with any wet mediums such as gel pens and markers. Relax and enjoy and put yourself in the moment as you color.

I love Dea's artwork. I will color nearly every page in this book. I do copy onto my own paper so I can use my water media when desired so I really didn't need two copies of each design but many will love having them. I also very much enjoy Dea's informational and instructional videos on YouTube and her FB group. I consider this book to be a wonderful addition to my library of coloring books.

I have fallen in love with Dea Lenihan's drawings! The paper is very good in her books and there is a copy of each pic which means you can try out various color schemes and coloring mediums on the two pages, very clever. I highly recommend this book for colorists who use pencils. If you use markers be sure to put a piece of card stock between the pages to protect the next page. You will love this book!

The paper quality was really nice- nice tooth. BUT, the artwork was really sort of childish looking. MY opinion only. I loved the page with the squirrel but that was done in grayscale. The other pages just did nothing for me. I hate putting down an authors work- any author but this wasn't my thing and felt I need to write something as others may see such high reviews (as I did) and then, be disappointed when the book arrives (as I was). I gave this to my daughter who may use it.

This is the first Dea Lenihan book I've bought. I love her artwork and I love this book. I thought i was finished buying books for awhile. .nope I want all of her books.

I love all of Dea Lenihans books. There are so many fun pictures to choose from. I recommend this and all of her books.

This is a beautiful coloring book, and so much fun to actually color. I can't wait to see if Dee creates more coloring books!!!
