Perhaps the best ever written on the subject . Filled with very practical advice for those pursuing a celibate lifestyle. His word of challenge is particularly appropo - you are on your own in finding the way , and a close relationship with Christ is key.
This text is a clear, inspirational, and complete study of celibate life with emphasis on clergy and/or male religious' needs and aspirations. I did not find it as helpful for women religious, nor was it a "workbook" type of text. All in all, the book is well written and documented with appropriate sources, but formation personnel in women's religious institutes might want to combine a study of this text with other articles on celibacy written primarily for women and/or by women religious.
Without apparent bias, this book emphasizes the practicalities of a celibate life, with guidance for those who choose it. While the focus is on religious celibates who have openly vowed to remain celibate, secular people who practice celibacy are mentioned in many of the discussions. The author argues persuasively that seminary education inadequately prepares priests for the challenges of celibate life; this argument could apply to secular education as well. "Living the Celibate Life" seems frank, well-reasoned and, of the books I have read on the subject, most likely to appeal to a general as well as a specialized audience.
