I had the good fortune to discover this book a full seven years after I terminated my rather long term psychotherapy which culminated in a classical analysis of at least several years. My analyst shared offices with Dr. Brenner, who features as a central figure in this book, and having read this, I can only interpret my experience with him as thousands of hours of evidence that he was a true and worthy disciple of the cheerful yet austere doctor whom Malcolm refers to as the "intransigent purist."Joseph Adelson in The New York Times Review of Books goes a bit over the line in paraphrasing: "Dr. Brenner takes the hardest of lines. Psychoanalysis is based upon inducing and interpreting the transference reaction. Anything that interferes with or distracts from it must be eschewed. Strictly. The analyst must maintain the most stringent incognito. Under no circumstances can he make known to the patient his opinions, values, interest or foibles, nor can he offer advice, criticism, reassurance or sympathy. If the analyst is late to a session, he must neither apologize nor explain why. He must attend - and make the patient attend - only to the thoughts, fantasies and feelings produced by his lateness. If the patient's child is gravely ill, the analyst should not express concern or sympathy. His task is limited to evoking and understanding the patient's reactions."He goes on to say that "this is a grim doctrine." On the contrary, I found it kind and accepting, or at least I found that my analyst was able to practice it that way. Frustrating, of course. But ultimately freeing in a way that a less austere approach might not be, leading to a clarity that might otherwise have been compromised. I suspect that much of the sense of grimness that analysts attribute to this purist perspective refers to grim abstinence on the part of the analyst. Certainly, it would be easier -- I would imagine -- to just act naturally, as one might at a party, to explain and indulge oneself and to engage in polite courtesies. This would certainly take a load off of the analyst -- it would be a lot less like work. Maintaining an accepting and encouraging attitude without recourse to these potential diversions is an exacting art. I came to appreciate the discipline most of all.Was my analysis a success? My symptoms are long since relieved. I'm happy with my life. How much of this do I attribute to analysis and how much to my own efforts (and good luck) away from the analyst's couch? I do not think I am supposed to be able to know that, but I find it hard to imagine how I could have worked through all I did and flowered in quite the way I have without that office and couch as workshop. And I find it hard not to admire and appreciate the way my analyst actively helped me in all of that hard work while keeping himself (mostly) out of it.This book was written over thirty years ago. Not knowing what has been going on inside the world of psychoanalysis since then, I could not say what has changed. There are other fascinating characters besides Brenner and his disciple Green (not his real name). I found the pioneering researcher of psychoanalysis and his drive to (tape) record sessions to be fascinating and admirable. I have read that findings from just this sort of research may have poured oil on the disputations as to therapeutic style, while identifying factors in the patient's or client's style and presentation which seem to have greater predictive value as to outcome.For various reasons, it has been said almost since this book was written that the golden age of psychoanalysis is long since over. The world does not have patience or money for long conversations where medications and brief interventions will suffice. If my experience has been an expensive anachronism, I consider it a gift and a luxury worth the time and price many times over.When I read this book, I find a window into something that can be that compelling a journey. Well done, Janet Malcolm.

I found this a fascinating description of how traditional psychoanalysts view and practice their profession. I could see why the author called this profession impossible. One would expect that analysts might be better adjusted personally, have a clear idea of what they do and how to do it, and have less hangups than the rest of us. Rather comforting, I guess, to learn that this is not at all true. Worth the price of the book to find this out.

The mind is a powerful tool and can do amazing feats and amazing damage. To get a view of what it s like on the psychoanalysts perspective was fascinating and at time disturbing. A truly worthwhile read.

I went into this book only knowing about Psychoanalysis what Janet Malcolm had told me in her excellent book, "In the Freud Archives." This book is extremely dense and had the habit of making me very sleepy, but for the length of my read I felt like something undefinable was happening; that I was gleaning some type of insight from the book subconsciously, which, if you've read the book, will seem like either incredible coincidence, or literary genius on Malcolm's part. This is top notch journalism.

Though Janet Malcolm is not a psychoanalyst (she was a very good journalist) she has probably written the best book (for the layman) about what psychoanalysis is about and the experience of psychoanalysis. A shorter version of this book was initially published in the New Yorker and the book is a very good expanded version of that article. AB

I thought the first installment, "Fate's Fables," was a fun and intriguing book with an original concept. This second installment has more of a sci-fi feel that felt like a literary form of whiplash. While it was good to revisit characters, I felt it was odd for them to suddenly go from a medieval fantasy setting to something like "Warehouse 13." The concept of the Keep baffles me (how is it best that a single human from Earth look after an entire planetoid full of dangerous magical artifacts?), and I didn't like how the villains seemed to come right out of nowhere.

T. Rae Mitchell writes a fantastical transition between Fate's Fables and this new book: Fate's Keep. The story between Fate and Finn during an ever-changing conflict, is what hooks readers and grasps the imagination in this action-packed adventure. If you're a fan of fairy tales and action, this is the series for you. I wasn't sure how I would feel at first about this red-haired and hot-tempered heroine, but she won my dedication as I became enthralled in the plot and her cause. This is a highly addicting series and be prepared to let the rest of the world go by, while you're transported into another land of wonder and enchantment.

I could not continue reading this book and stopped around chapter 3. I think it may be for teenagers, which I am not. The story line was so unrealistic that it was hard to relate.

Great book for an easy read. The characters are easy to follow. Hoping for a sequel soon. The most recent book had some sections i would glance over (or skim). Overall it is a very well written book though. I finished it in under two days and I am eagerly awaiting the next book. I am so hoping for a happy ending soon. The main characters being stuck in "I love you. I can't have you." is frustrating, but it still works somehow. You can definitely tell how much time, imagination, and effort the author has put into these books.

I have been reading the series of books. I enjoyed all of them. Looking forward to seeing what happens next. I like the way T. Rae Mitchell makes you feel like you are right there with them.. I like her style of writing.

This is definitely a different kind of story, and some of the new characters are interesting. Especially at the end. I think I like Brune best of all and wonder what will happen to her in the next installment.

I cannot wait to read the next installment! I fell in love with all the characters instantly. I highly recommend these books to anyone who loves a good fairytale, quest, and good vs evil.

Sadly, I scanned most of the pages taking place in The Keep. It was a different monster but, the same fear biting at the back of her throat, the same misjudgment, the same pain gripping her arm (shoulder, leg, cheek, head...), same last minute rescue. I really wanted to like this sequel but nah.

On the surface, this a beautiful, oversized book which is exactly as advertised-- an encyclopedic listing of outlaw motorcycle clubs worldwide. Each club has a little listing containing SOME information. Some have a box containing more info-- date, place of origin, locations, club colors (actual colors-- white, blue gold,etc.) and description of the club patch... and there SOME very nice photographs of SOME patches. Which brings me to my major beef-- NOT ENOUGH! It would have been very nice if at least most of the clubs had their patches pictured. Considering how many clubs have websites and E-mail addresses, this does'nt seem to be too big an expectation... What IS here is very nice---some beautiful photography and some essays by clubbers.. BUT---another beef, there are some inaccuracies and incompletes (nit picking? perhaps.) 1)FILTHY FEW is sub group within the Hells Angels MC ONLY, and a club that stole the name in New Zealand. It is NOT a "common idiom throughout the motorcycle culture". 2)The NUGGETS MC has not flown the described patch of "a beer drinking rabbit on a motorcycle" since it's very early days. Since the late 60's, they've flown their current patch--- a gold nugget with a motorcycle inside. They rode full dressers back then and morphed into choppers--an interesting fact not mentioned. 3)The Mongrel Mob of NZ should not have been included--- they wear cuts with patches but they DON'T RIDE. 4)The Gypsy Jokers is listed as a"classic club" and it is--- their patch is listed as a grinning skull... gee whiz, that's the Australian club who just appropriated the name and made up their own patch. The Aussies have since made a connection to the originals and adopted the real top and bottom rockers but kept the skull center patch. The REAL Gypsy Joker patch was and is a walking jester--- that's a real boner on the author's part. An annoying incomplete--"Curious about that demonic critter on the Pagan's patch?" sez the back cover and the blurb on Amazon--- Yeah, it's the norse fire demon Surtur or dark Surt, BUT they DON"t say that it's a direct lift from a 1963 issue of Marvel comic's JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY in a TALES OF ASGARD story drawn by one of the greatest comic book artists of the 20th century- JACK KIRBY. Despite these criticisms, it's still a cool book... One really funny feature is a reprint of a 1960's cop manuel on outlaw bikers--- so THAT'S where they got the idea that I had a shotgun rigged up in my handlebars!

The ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA alludes to being an A-Z authority on outlaw motorcycle clubs ... a one-stop shop for anything/everything pertaining to such clubs ... quite appealing to anyone curious in learning more about the outlaw biker culture. While the book provides a nicely organized listing of outlaw clubs with a decent collection of color photos, it lacks the substantive content I was expecting for a book with "encyclopedia" in its title.Organized alphabetically, THE ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA does provide general information about a large number of bike clubs, including a multitude of lesser-known groups. Most of the entries follow a standard base of details such as date of origin, estimated membership and the territory the clubs preside. As expected, the larger, more recognizable (infamous?) clubs receive more lavish, multiple-paged entries and more photographs, but not much .Considering the subject matter, the listing of clubs is likely incomplete/ever-changing and the availability of elaborate details is understandably scant as secrecy plays a part into the one-percenter culture; I don't fault the author for this. My issue is that the book could have been so much more, well ... "encyclopedic". It would have been nice to see the colors/patch accompanying each club entry. The larger clubs do have known histories (proven by the numerous television documentaries like the "Gangland" series and books written by actual members) that could have provided significantly more information, timelines, leadership, etc. Appendices could have shed light on the various add-on patches and symbolism. Other, overview topics could have been covered as well: the numerous other patches worn, crime, tattoos, the role of women in these groups, a timeline of significant events and how the culture has progressed/regressed over the years.The whole one-percenter culture is enigmatic, ominous and provocatively interesting to those who don't ride. I believe the ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA is an interesting and colorful presentation of a large list of outlaw biker clubs. One the surface, the book serves as a decent overview that covers a large number of the more obscure clubs and should satisfy those with little knowledge of such clubs. But for those who enjoy reading about biker clubs, the ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA will likely fall short of being the resource it is expected to be.

All I can say is that Mr. Hayes did a great job in telling what the clubs represent and how they have been misrepresented by the media as being villains when they actually are a brotherhood living by their own rules which by the constitution is everyone's right. Again he has done a great job. I highly recommend this encyclopedia for those wanting this insight.

The title of this book is a bit misleading. When I saw that it is an Encyclopedia, I assumed that there would be information about the various OMC's; history, notable members, significant events about criminal involvement, etc.The book is merely an identification of OMC colors or patches with very little information about the clubs. My bad for making that assumption, but the book would be more fairly referred to as a OMC colors or patch picture book. I wanted the book for more of a historical purpose, something to show the evolution of the clubs, their conflicts, alliances and the dynamics of their criminal involvement. I should have done a little more research before I bought the book.

The book is missing more clubs than it contains. Those that are in it have very little information about them. Useless.

I haven't wanted to throw a book against the wall this badly since I read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee". I have been doing ministry for years, and this book forces one to consider whole paradigms of how to "do church". I had the privilege of meeting Roy in Dallas recently, and the dude is legit. I'm excited to continue to put the DMM strategy into practice in the various areas I do ministry in, and this book is quite helpful in understanding how to try to do that. If you are involved in any kind of Great Commission church planting type stuff, this is a must read. Warning....you will not agree with everything if you are a church brat like me....hang in there, and allow the Holy Spirit to speak.

This is a good book for those who think "There must be something more," "There must be a better way to do church," There must be a better way to accomplish what Jesus told us to do - to make disciples of all nations." Roy Moran has gone on an adventure - a radical, simple attempt to leave behind non-essentials and follow principles that will yield disciple-making disciples. He invites us to follow him in this adventure and offers concrete steps for how to launch out on our own adventure in reaching the lost. He takes the kind of principles and stories found in books like Miraculous Movements (taking place in rural unreached areas) and wrestles with how something similar could maybe happen in the USA. If you're looking for "something more" than church as usual, you might get a few steps ahead in your search by reading Roy's ideas and experience.

This is a game changer. Totally put words to the aching in my heart for the last 25 years of full-time ministry - frustration of how to go about making disciples in a local church structure that, because of the crowd mentality and program-driven nature, has all but abandoned the mandate of Jesus in Matthew 28. This book has helped us re-write our focus and practice of small group ministry, and I believe will help us obey Jesus, multiply disciple-making efforts, and grow the Kingdom - not just attendance.

I loved reading Spent Matches. I admit, though, that I may be prejudiced, because Roy Moran has been my spiritual advisor, or pastor (as he doesn't like to be called), since 1999. The reason I liked reading this book is because I have been living it for a number of years now, and I know that it works. I have participated in journey groups and discovery groups and have also facilitated both. It is the most amazing feeling in the world to see someone not familiar with the Bible open it, read it, and talk about what they think that passage means and how they can apply it to their lives. I have seen this over and over again for the last few years, and, during this process with others, my reading and understanding of the Bible has also grown.So I highly recommend this book and using the discovery process to get together with your friends, neighbors, and workmates to see how God wants us to live our lives. In the process, we become disciple-making disciples.

Great book and ones that really helps you to appreciate that the whole DMM phenomena that has seen so much fruit in resistant places can actually work here in the US. THe concepts are surprisingly simple. The author takes you on his personal pilgrimage trying every discipleship method in the book. It can be a bit meandering at times but I guess it is necessary to help you realize that he has tried many different methods and this one really seems to work. Also good to see how he has contextualized the approach for American church AND American culture.

This is a book that can help change western thinking about what it means to follow Jesus and make disciples. If you are worn out from church models that keep producing the same wilted crops, then read it. You will be glad you did!

Super book that make you stop and reconsider how we are trying to grow churches, and teach members. Recommendation to read it from a friend, sure glad he told me about it.

I was about halfway through it when he signed it for me and reading this book is like entering the mind of Ben Shapiro. You are able to think like him, understand things the way he does, and you start to become almost as smart and sharp as him. Heck, the reason I have been arguing on Facebook more is because of how smart this book is making me and the way it is making me argue better.However, for all of the wonderful things associated with this book, it isn’t without flaws. When I stopped being a libertarian, one of the reasons was because I realized that a lot of libertarian sources I listen to are biased (Ron Paul Liberty Report, Julie Borowski, various libertarian websites, CATO, Reason, etc.) and Shapiro is no different. There are many claims in this book that are exaggerated (e.g the claim that liberals are not patriotic). There are many liberals and lefties I know that are very patriotic and love this country. The section on “anti-semitic bullies” was a section that I disagreed with wholeheartedly.All in all, this is an excellent book that I still cannot recommend enough- 9.3/10

I hate the fact that I have to give this book a 2 star review because I am a huge fan of Ben Shapiro, but this book really didn't seem totally objective. Everything has a bias, granted, if you set out to find a book,movie,TV show,exc that doesn't have any bias, your search will endless. That being said, this book seems to cherry pick things and not give great supporting detail to the arguments being made (not all of them, but a fair amount, Chapter 6 "green bullies" is a good example of that). One chapter in particular, chapter 7, "Secular Bullies" is essentially an argument of "secularists are all anti-religious people who couldn't care less about good god fearing people" when in actuality people who support secularism (Atheists & religious folks) simply understand that scientific (and in some cases political) ideas are best not predicated on divine reasoning. It's perfectly fine to disagree with that, however Shapiro seems to think of it with an "us vs them" mentality. This book, and what I thought of it has not made me like Ben any less, I want to make that clear. However this is certainly not his best work.With this review in mind, I would like to point out that chapter 2 "Anti-patriotic bullies" and chapter 3 "race bullies" are absolutely amazing. It is only in the latter half of the book that it really starts going down hill.

Shapiro goes into great detail to expose the lies and misinformation that is being perpetrated by the American left. The beginning of the book helps to outline the history of this behavior with examples, and in what areas of American society this toxic behavior is manifesting. Shapiro does a great job outlining what is happening and how to stop it: speak up and don't remain silent in the face of the left's intimidation tactics(punch back). I didn't like that the book appears to be very much in the moment. It examines past history of the left's behavior, but doesn't account for the possibility of major conservative victories or fighting back that happened after the fact(ex. Trump).The book is a great (recent)history lesson about the left and how their fear tactics grip different areas of American culture. With great examples and well-placed points exposing the left's idiocy, the only real downsides of the novel fail to account for are giving numerous examples of how the average American can 'punch back', which I think would have really made the book even that much better.

They have never read a single book by him, never watched a speech or listened to a pod cast. They hate him because they are told to. He is smart and in touch with what is wrong with this country, and that is what scares the left.Tired of being called a racist because you want voter ID laws, read the book.
