I really like this as a small, concise resource for those who are looking for an introduction to Sonoran desert foot plants, but it's definitely NOT a comprehensive resource for those who have been studying native foods for any notable length of time. I would highly recommend it for beginners, but I think those who have already invested a lot of time in researching this information should PROBABLY look elsewhere.Cheers!

Very nice and concise, carry along for identifying useful plants native (or introduced) to the AZ area. I do wish the color images were a little crisper.Limited space means not all of the leaves are shown in a close up, the author sometimes showing different aspects such as a longer view of the large bushy plants to the bulbs so sometimes it is difficult or next to impossible to see a clear shot of what most would use to identify the plant-its leaf structure.For those with a working knowledge i.e. grew up around these plants with a basic recognition would have no problem, for those new it will just take a little more time and effort. Nice info on its uses as food and or medicines, also precautions.Excellent for most, experts would not likely ever use this except as a teaching aid (which it is in my case).

Kane's produced a very field-portable, user-friendly guide to the essential food plants of the Sonoran desert. I particularly like his "edibility index", a one word (high, medium low) characterization of the real palatability and/or unpleasant side effects of the flora in question. I'd agree with him whole-heartedly, for example, that jojoba beans, which show up as edible in numerous guides are, very much on the "low" side of this index. While you can get them down, they're likely to come back and haunt you hours later! The photographs are also good, often with a general view of the plant, then a close up of the edible part. He notes medicinal uses, but doesn't dwell on them, which is fine.I'd recommend this book for both the serious desert trekker and the casual hiker.

Useful easy to pack around booklet. Really would have liked it to have more nutrition information, better photos for identification would really help too. I clearly did not read the description for this booklet well enough, if I had I would not have bought it for the price I paid.

Aside from the excellent photos of the plants I like how specific the directions were for preparing them to eat. I also liked the additional information offered such as medicinal uses and cautions. The book is thin and light which makes it easy to carry along on my desert outings. I've learned that using tongs to harvest prickly pear or similar cactus fruits is preferable to other methods and that placing the fruits in ice water and sloshing them around will remove most of the glocids (tiny stickers) from the exterior. I like to peel mine before eating them but most folks eat the whole thing.

This book has a permanent place in my between the seats tray in the car. I used it to gather some very young Red Yucca flower stalks and there were as tasty as asparagus, but FREE. Already looking for ward to cactus fruit harvest this summer.

This book is what I expected for the price. Its a smaller size book with what seems like water resistant paper. Has color pictures which displays Sonoran desert plants that are edible. For the price its a great resource, which isn't really substantial enough to be a stand a lone guide. Worth the money and well written, AND I got it one day sooner than expected from Amazon--they're great.

Great reference book. The pages are plasticized which is great for taking it out in the field. There is a lot of info about each plant featured. Tells you where it is found, how to prepare it, any cautions and much more. There could be more detailed pics but overall I'm glad I purchased.

The words that came from WWII are part of our cultural vocabulary (for those of a certain age). Reading this book changed my cozy comfort with the sacrifices of our soldiers to a humbled, grateful prayer for their very existence. The soldiers were a cross section of regular people selected by fate and circumstance for a crushing existence. A number survived. A larger number did not. They thought they had been abandoned to death and slavery by our country. A group was rescued by another group of group of regular people selected by fate and circumstance to be daring commandos sneaking into enemy territory to make a rescue. Sides's telling of all the sides of the story is gripping non-fiction about humanity. The gritty details of POW existence for our soldiers horrify. The soldiers' words of acceptance, their sources of encouragement, their humility in the face of their heroism and calm retrospection about the details humble me. Yes, I use "humble" a lot about my reaction to this true story because I am humbled in my comfortable, Internet world when I realize what made it possible for me.

Ghost Soldiers is a remarkable book by a remarkable author. Hampton Sides brings to life the courage and strength of the POWs from the U.S. and other countries in the face of shocking atrocities by the Japanese in the Philippines during WWII. Sides describes the daring rescue of more than 500 POWs at Cabanatuan prison camp in such detail that you almost feel that you are part of it. I couldn't put the book down.

This is a book I finished on Veteran's Day 2018. These people came to life for me in this book. The author did an excellent job in telling about them, their eccentricities, their ambitions, their dreams and their nightmares. The basics we all know, but this helped bring it to life for me. As the daughter of a WWII veteran from the European theater and the cousin of a couple of men from the Pacific theater, I felt myself remembering what they had shared with me, which is something not all authors can ignite. These people are still The Greatest Generation. This book would be good not just for lovers of history like me, but would be good for anyone..

This book was absolutely riveting, and horrifying when you read about the terrible treatment of the POWs. We purchased it for my High School son's WWII class paper and I ended up going back and reading the entire book cover to cover. It is well written, but I assume being a National Bestseller would let you know that as well. The story is tremendous and not one I had ever heard before. Well worth the read!

Having just read the author's "In the Kingdom of Ice" and enjoyed it immensely, turning to one of his earlier works, and especially one so well received, was an easy choice. "Ghost Soldiers" shows Sides at his historical and even sociological best, bringing a well beyond horrifying story that began early in WWII and lasted for years to light. This is not just a book for history buffs or war story readers, this is one for everyone who cares for America and where it has been. It is also a book for anyone who could use some additional inspiration, a reason to get up in the morning, a vision of courage and leadership and survival. The Bataan Death March has been fairly well documented over the years but what brings this book to the fore is the mesmerizing tale of the valiant rescue of several hundred survivors near the end of the war, U.S., British and others, who by most accounts should have died long before at the torturing hands of their sadistic and monstrous captors, The Imperial Japanese Army. As bad as the Germans were, the Japanese were never to be outdone in the cruelty department. It began deep in their culture and could be witnessed in their attitude toward surrender, captivity status, and even the training of their own soldiers, sailors and airmen. Fighter pilots, for example, were subject to brutal training regimens at the hands of their own Japanese instructors and woe to any student who seemed unmotivated or who missed a test question-- students were routinely bludgeoned, often to the point of unconsciousness.Allied POW's, not to mention many thousands of native Filipinos, were treated so inhumanely by the Japanese as to all but defy description, but this is precisely what Sides does so well. The rescue of the Bataan survivors very nearly came too late, but I can't imagine many of them would have said that at the time of their release from captivity. Sides' research and writing are brilliant as always. He is a national treasure who goes well beyond the boundaries of historical excellence. This is a book for the ages. If I had my way, Japanese students would all read it, too.

I am a co-sponser of an Alateen group and the kids use this book constantly...I purchased my own copy in addition to the copies owned by the group...it is chocked full of great stories illustrating the experience, strength and hope of the 12 step program...as an adult, I have many resources known as conference approved literature but I also read this book for my own journey...it is very healing to an adult who has issues from childhood and teenagehood...

This is a very concise book that can easily be used in the home as a familystudy, or as individual contemplation and journaling.Thank you,Shirley J.

As an adult child of an alcoholic, I never realized how affected I was by the disease of alcoholism. My fatter died sober. I thought that alcoholism destruction stopped with the cessation of alcohol. I did. It know that it is The unmanageability of life. That unmanageability of life coupled with over whelming desires to fix control and " save" another person are often at the core of the alcoholic / addictive mind. Learning to understand that alcoholism / Addiction is a disease not a moral choice can save a persons life. Learning that " did not. Cause it. ; That I can not cure it ; that I can not change it, but I can contribute are mDe Lear through the words in this book.Reading the Alateen books gives me language for those feelings and emotions. It is very insightful for a older woman to identify completely with the thoughts of a teen.. It gives me language for deep seeded emotions, most of whom I did not even know I hadAlanon and Alateen based on the AA Big book model of 12 step recovery are perhaps among the best tools for for dealing with the ravages that addiction brings to all who are affected by it.

Helpful information on making changes in my life and having the courage to make a different choice, do something different to get different results.

This book was in great condition when I received it. The kids in the group are loving it. I think we may do this again.

HUGE help with genealogy information after doing family trees on Ancestry.com. This book goes into more detail about what happened to some of the children (lots of stillborns, so sad), and who is related to who. Sometimes the links on Ancestry can be a bit dubious (such as someone in my Gates family tree named 'Pearly'.... really? Pearly Gates? I guess it's possible, but I feel better when I can verify a source off of Ancestry ;) ). This book is concise, and laid out as such to make it easy to find who I'm looking for.

For anyone who reads a lot about British history, this book is a valuable reference work. I am reading a lot right now about the Tudors and found it next to impossible to remember who is who. Alison Weir took ten years to research and write this book and the care shows. There is not a lot about any one personage, but everything one really needs to know is in there. A warning though: this is a reference work and not something one reads cover-to-cover.

I first got an earlier edition of this book in paperback. At that time there was no other easy reference to find who "Prince Eddy" might have been in the Victorian Era, which of Henry I's numerous illegitimate offspring died in the White Ship, or which royal Duke of Kent Princess Marina of Greece married.If you don't have the "Trivial Pursuit" type of mind that has to follow up that kind of reference in a totally unrelated book or article, you may still enjoy the nuggets of information embedded in the summary biographies and the brief descriptions of the various dynasties. How often do you find an opening sentence such as, "The Tudors came from bastard stock." describing that notable dynasty or "...Every monarch of Britain since has been a usurper..." concerning the purported marriage of George III to a commoner before his official marriage?My only criticism might be that a three-dimensional, color-coded diagram would often be useful and that is the fault of the individuals being described, not the author.I have found it so useful that I recently purchased an electronic version to carry around with me.

This was my second purchase of Alison Weir's book; the first copy I have been using for quite a while and this most recent copy I purchased for another family member who is also doing genealogy work. I like this book primarily because it is one of the very few books containing the details of the royal families of the UK and it does so in such a format for easy use. Also, in other sources I have used to cross-reference Ms. Weir's book, I have yet to find what I would call a mistake, an error, a questionable entry or claims to know something which is yet unverified in what she has written. It is a superb work of history, which, according to Ms. Weir, took 22 years to compile; we should all be grateful she was willing and able to give the rest of us so much for so little effort on our part.

Alison Weir is renowned for her historical fiction and her historical works. One of the problems I have when perusing her works is keeping the players straight. Who was related to whom? Who were the children (legitimate and illegitimate) of kings and lords? In this work, Weir provides us with a resource that can be consulted while reading works on Britain's rulers over time--and keeps the players a little straighter!Weir notes at the outset (Page 3): "This handbook is about the monarchy, and it begins with the first ruler who properly may be accorded the title of monarch, Egbert of Wessex." For each ruler, one to three or so pages suffices. We learn details of the family (mother and father), siblings, wife/husband/lover, children (legitimate and not so), and death details. The work begins, unsurprisingly, with Egbert. Other early rulers--Alfred (born in 846-849), Canute (born 995), Harold II (overthrown by the Normans, ending the Saxon reign), William the Conqueror (born in 1008 and beginning the Norman Dynasty). The Norman dynasty included Henry I.Then he Plantagenet line, beginning with Henry II in 1154. The line ended with Richard III, in the battle at Bosworth in 1485. Among the monarchs in this line--Richard I (the Lion heart), Edward I (Longshanks), Edward III (and note John of Gaunt, one of his sons, and his role in the line of monarchs), Richard II, Edward IV. Then, after this lineage came the Tudors, beginning with Henry VII and ending with Elizabeth I. After that? The book runs through the different families--Stuarts, House of Hanover, House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha morphed into Windsor, with Elizabeth II being the latest monarch.All in all, a useful resource, helping to keep the players straight in English/British history.

This is a very good book, absolutely necessary for anyone interested in royal genealogy.. It has been very hard to find for years, so I was glad to see a copy in print, even if it had to come from England, Even with that, the price was reasonable.

This is a an excellent no frills reference book. I was expecting more of a narrative with some glossy illustrations, but that is going to have to come from a different book. There is so much information in this book that there's no space for extraneous content. This format also keeps the price reasonable. Recommended for the genealogist, the anglophile and anyone else who wonders how the English ever keep track of their kings and queens.

This book is very good on the British Royal Families of England, Scotland, and Great Britain.It is also has there wife’s and children and what happen to them. It only shows the children of the kings of the first generation and if they had any issue.

I am a genealogy fanatic and was looking for a small reference book that would be easy to travel with. Unless you have a wide background in medieval history, this format may be somewhat confusing. In addition I have noticed 2 errors in information/parentage/dates. That being said, information from these early times often hard to validate due to lack of surviving records. In my opinion a decent source for the price.
