About the Author
Louis L’Amour was born Louis Dearborn LaMoore in Jamestown, North Dakota, in 1908. He published his first work at the age of eighteen and went on to write scores of adventure and Western stories, becoming one of the most popular writers of all time. He died in 1988 at his home in Los Angeles.

I enjoy escaping to the old west with a good L'Amour story, and these do not disappoint.
A fine fast read where you as the hero feel the grit in your teeth, smell the gunsmoke, feel the weight of carrying a wounded comerade, feel the rich blush of new love, all in the setting of great high desert/mountain country, lush grassy meadows, glossy cattle fattening under the sun and enriching the earth with with fresh feed grass/hay. Well watered pastures and feedlots are well defined by rocky outcroppings, arroyos, ridges sculpted by nature to make every landhold different and special. Add enough good people who work hard and relentlessly to reap the wealth thet the land and herds with yield and enough bad guys who want to take advantage of the short cuts of thievery, murder, double dealing, to become wealthy through someone else's investment in the virtues of an honest life. Then there is the fine line between being "good" and "bad" and how hard that is to figure out when your life is always on the line.
Yes, there will always be oddities with the writing: character starts across street with rifle in hand, but has no rifle when he gets to other side. Forget the niceties, that is NOT why one reads a Louis L'Amour! This is authentic flavor and spice of the old west, peopled by characters and personalities too big for small print. It is no wonder his stories are often put on the big screen - you cannot fake the bigger than life heroes and humbler than dirt egos of the main characters juxtaposed by the wicked villains and grasping evil-doers who always get their comeuppance when the hero hits the scene! They save the day and often the girl! What's not to love!
This book of great western short stories reminded me just how much I love Louis L'Amour as an author. Once I downloaded it onto my Kindle and began reading, I realized that I had read these stories years ago. They were even better this second time around. The same visuals I remember came back to life from my first reading and I smiled all the way through every story.. again! If you want to escape to the old west, this is an easy way to do it.
I never really liked short stories, but Louis L'Amour's tales are always winners, short or full length. His masterful descriptions of people and land are fascinating. I still admire the strong sense of right and wrong that is captured in his books. There's too little of that now.
This is a series of short story western's. The stories are all about different characters. The author does a good job getting the reader into the characters so quickly that by the end of the story you feel you know the lead character well. I will be looking for more stories by this author.
These six tales are well worth reading. I especially enjoyed the story about Cat Morgan- a man who captures mountain lions. Every story has L'Amour's signature Western style, with tough men facing big odds in the name of justice. These very much resemble the author's full-sized novels and compliment a collection very well. Also, the introduction goes into detail about L'Amour's career as a short story writer in the early days before he became world famous.
Fine western stories. Great description causes exciting climax-endings. I completed the stories in two days. This book is really difficult to put down until you have finished the last page.
