Steve O'Hearn does a good job delivering a very encouraging, personal (as well as informative) tone to the material. While containing much the same material as other Oracle Press SQL books, it does not lift or "steal" any of the wording. O'Hearn has opted to write everything from scratch. The book also lacks the typographical errors that have plagued so many Oracle Press books over the years.This book's objective is to prepare you for the exam. It is not an exhaustive SQL reference (though certainly robust) - nor does it claim to be. In addition to the book itself, you also have access to the ebook and additional exam simulated questions via the CD. The ebook is in Adobe and isn't formatted quite as well as the Kindle version. The ebook is baked into the price at nearly $40.There really isn't too much I would offer in the area of improvements - except to have even more exam type questions.
This is my review 3 months after I bought the book but just 2 days after taking the exam......and PASSING it on the first try! This is the 2nd book that I read after first reading Matthew Morris' Study Guide for 1Z0-047: Oracle Database SQL Expert: Oracle Certification Prep.That one is a small guide (150 pages). Steve O'Hearn's books is 700+ pages. Though I have 17yrs of experience, I knew my SQL knowledge was intermediate but after going through this guide, saying it was intermediate was barely enough. I now TRULY feel that after reading this book and Morris' guide that I feel way more comfortable in saying "expert", but "expert" truly comes with real-world experience. But the guide will help. The end of chapter quizzes and also the accompanying practice exam CD definitely helps.My advice is do NOT take the practice exams on the CD until you are VERY close to feeling comfortable in taking the real-world exam. And when you do take the exam take them as close as possible to the real exam. Whatever settings there are make sure they mimic the real world.I studied from mid-April to mid-July, so a total of 3 months and this helped me PASS the exam. It is 120 minutes long (2 hours) and 70 questions total and you must get a minimum percentage right to pass. 66% is passing. Not 66 questions! As that would be a minimum of 94% passing. At that rate, very few people would pass. I got a 78% (55 out of 70). I used up EVERY second. I had 45 seconds left to spare to go over any questions I had marked but alas had little time.Study long and slowly and take your time, as there's no rush to take the exam. They're offered daily. And good luck.
Warning. This book is copyright 2010. The cover says "bonus exam available with free online registration". However when I tried to activate that feature, the web site stated "This LearnKey/McGraw Hill program is no longer accepting new users."That was disappointing. The online practice exam was pretty good. I studied up some more after taking it and was hoping to try out the bonus exam.Questions at the end of each chapter are enlightening. The book is big and covers lots of material. Make sure you use other sources such as Oracle Certification Prep - Study Guide for 1Z0-047.
I bought this book to take the test for OCE certification. I haven't taken it so far, so I cannot say if I will pass or not, but anyway I feel comfortable enough to evaluate this book.Pros-The subjects are well spread over the chapters.The language that the author uses is very easy to follow and I recommend it as a good reading.Chapter on subqueries is very good, specially on correlated ones.Cons-Unfortunatelly, the author does not go as in depth as I expected, because exam 047 is really difficult with long and confusing queries and all queries in the book are really short and simple.Some essential content is missing. For example: In the chapter about views, he doesn't say a word about WITH CHECK OPTIONS and READ ONLY. In the chapter about SEQUENCES, he doesn't mention the CACHE x parameter, and so forth.In my humble opinion, this book is a good aid for a person who wants to pass the exam, if, and only if, that pal studies hard and consults Oracle Database SQL Reference all the time, making it a companion to the book.If the buyier wants only to learn sql, this is a good book and will teach the basics very well, nevertheless, I still recommend Microsoft MVP Itzik-ben-gan for the beginners.
