After watching the series Ice Road Trucking I didnt like Hugh that much. I did not like his attitude he carries on the show. And being a truck driver myself I understand the industry, so I thought.After reading the way Hugh was raised and the work attitude that his dad taught him, I have come away with a different opinion of Hugh. When I look at the world today as a whole, I see that the young adults have not been taught to WORK. They fell the government owes them everything. But under Hugh rough character he tells stories that helped to make him a man. How he learned at a very young age how to make money and work with his own hands.I liked reading this book. I learned many things about trucking in Northern Canada and how if I was to truck up there I would have a hard time because I dont know what to do or how to survive the bitter cold. The people are amazing up there.I would recommend it to anyone if they are looking for something different to read.

It was a quick read I read it in 3 days.different from Alex debogorski's book.a good read,fleshed out the story further.from just what was seen on ice road truckers t.v. show.mainly was about his work.which is his life & livelihood.if you was a fan of the show.I believe it's worth a read.

OH WOW!! This book is amazing. An absolutely wonderful informative story about the ice roads in NW Canada and the Ice Road Truckers. I have to admit I did not particularly like Polar Bear on the show, but I now have a new respect and love for him. It takes very special people to do their work in cruel climates. They are real men. Also, an entirely interesting documentary could be made on the building of the ice roads. I have to mention that my primary physicians brother, who is from India, works on the new bridge crossing the MacKenzie River. I live in Maryland on the east coast of the U.S. And I do not believe that the Ice Roads will ever be forgotten. I feel like it is a part of history for the entire world. Thank you Hugh!!!

This book is not what you might expect, i.e., endless folksy yarns of life on the road. It is actually very informative and thoughtful, and presents both a life and philosophy quite different from the norm. Hugh Rowland is an unapologetic hard worker who came from nothing, overcame many obstacles, successfully raised three daughters and stayed faithfully married to a high school sweetheart for over 30 years. He's partly the tough son of a bitch shown on IRT, but also very intelligent and cautious. He saves time and makes money by attention to details and thinking ahead. Those that don't, he observes, either fail and quit, or die on the ice road.The book is thoroughly entertaining. I read it almost at one sitting.

Ride with the Polar Bear, Hugh Roland as he tell his story about the ice roads. Hugh tells how he grew up learning to drive trucks, cats and other equipment in Canada. He talks about the dangers of making a trail where there are no trails, breaking ground and forging through the brush to make iceroads where there are none. He talks about fights and the rough and tumble men of the diamond mines, the long hours in the sub zero tempuratures, and the dangers of riding on thin ice.

Purchased for a school library grades 7-12. Strong interest for the boys who drive, or want to drive, trucks. Comfortable reading for anyone, each chapter has exciting problems, writer is an honorable family man, a piece of history which is vanishing due to the climate warming, written after the television show produced and has some notes about the difficult filming process. You feel like you are riding along with the writer over the years he has driven the ice roads.

If you know Hugh this book just expands what you already knew. It's an interesting read I felt.

This book gives a different view of life on the ice road. It is very informative. I was quite amazed at the requirements before you can drive on the ice road. It also gives a different view of Hugh Rowland to the man we see on television.

About the Author

Robin West is Frederick Haas Professor of Law and Philosophy at the Georgetown University Law Center and Faculty Director of the Georgetown Center for Law and Humanities, where she has taught since 1986. She previously taught at the University of Maryland School of Law from 1986-1991 and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law from 1982-1985, and served as Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School and Chicago Law School. She has written extensively on gender issues and feminist legal theory, constitutional law and theory, jurisprudence, legal philosophy, and law and humanities. Justin Murray is an appellate attorney at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. After receiving his J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as president of the pro-life student group Progressive Alliance for Life, he worked as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. District Court of Maryland. He has written articles on the constitutional status of the right to abortion, the intersection of legal ethics and racial justice, and criminal procedure. Meredith Esser is a litigation associate at Arnold & Porter LLP. She received her J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center, where she served as president of Law Students for Reproductive Justice and represented indigent clients in the District of Columbia as part of the Law Students in Court Legal Clinic. Upon graduation, she clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

One of those rare breed of philosophers who can actually write, with a whimsical humor, Austin was one of those chiefly responsible for demolishing the pretensions of the positivists, an arrogant group of Anglo-American intellectuals (with a few Poles and Viennese thrown in) who believed that the secrets of the Universe can be found by analysing the language of one particular intelligent biped, and treating its syntax in the same manner as the laws of physics are deduced with mathematics. Austin was one of those who pointed out the obvious; language evolved as a means of communication between people; as such words are far too complex enteties to be reduced to simple meanings that can then be played with in the form of symbols and all the 'problems' of philosophy thus magically solved. His skewering of A. J. Ayer, one of the principle exponents of this doctrine, is especially satisfying. The book itself contains almost no technical vocabulary at all,and hardly any words over ten letters, which is an achievement in itself. On the negative side it is completely deconstructive; it offers no positive insights into the mysteries of life whatsoever, if that is what you are looking for. But within its limits it is a gem, and in its day it virtually rescued philosophy from oblivion. One noteworthy factor about it; almost as much credit as the author must be given to the editor G.J. Warnock, who compiled it from lecture notes, and even includes a rather devastating critique of one of his own works in the final chapter.

John Langshaw Austin (March 28, 1911 - February 8, 1960) was born in Lancaster and Educated at Balliol College, before serving with MI6 during World War II. Later he became White's Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford from 1952 until his death in 1960. His language philosophy lectures form the basis for this book, which was compiled by G. J. Warnock with help from J. O. Urmson. The title was clearly chosen for its similarity to that "other" J. Austen's work, "Sense and Sensibility".J. L. Austin challenged the sense-data theories of perception of the day. Specifically he takes aim at Alfred Jules Ayer's "The Foundation of Empirical Knowledge". He also talks about H. H. Price's "Perception", and G. J. Warnock's book on "Berkeley". Even though the book suffers a little from being formed from lectures rather than Austin writing a book on the subject, Warnock has done an excellent job of compiling the lectures, and the result is a very readable book, which can be enjoyed by readers of all backgrounds.The entire book is only a little over 140 pages long, consisting of a foreword by G. J. Warnock, and then 11 sections based on the lectures which Austin gave between 1947 and 1959. It is unfortunate that Austin himself never put together a book, for it would be interesting to see how well it would match what G. J. Warnock has put together here. In lieu of that, I think readers will find this book accessible, humorous and insightful.

This is a very interesting book. It belongs in the tradition of ordinary language philosophy. Austin believes that many philosophical problems arise because philosophers are not careful enough about how words are actually used. Philosophers ask, for example, questions like "what is real?" without understanding the different ways in which the term "real" is actually used in everyday speech. This gives rise to a whole host of pseudo-problems and mistaken philosophical doctrines. By analyzing words more carefully it is possible to dissolve those pseudo-problems and mistaken philosophical doctrines.One of the primary goals of this book is to critique sense-datum theories of perception. Sense-datum theories claim that we do not ever perceive material objects directly. What we perceive are sense-data, and we infer material objects from those sense-data. Bertrand Russell presents this view of perception in his book The Problems of Philosophy. Austin argues that this view of perception is based on confusions about how we use words like "illusion" and "appears". Austin also argues against the notion that there are a certain class of statements that always serve as an epistemological foundation for another class of statements. It is often claimed, for example, that statements about sense-data are certain and serve as a foundation for our knowledge of material objects. But, as Austin points out, what kinds of statements serves as foundations, or evidence, for other statements depends on context. Austin ultimately argues for a kind of anti-foundationalism.My own training is in Continental philosophy, so I am not as familiar with the tradition of philosophy that Austin is responding to. However, it seems to me that Austin is actually making an argument, throughout the book, that in some ways is not that different from Kant's. Kant argued that our concepts only have empirical validity, and are only legitimately used when they are employed empirically. Kant argued against any kind of transcendent use of our concepts. Austin seems to me to be arguing something similar. We all understand how words are used in our everyday lives, but when we try to use those same words in a metaphysical, or transcendent, sense, we fall into all sorts of confusion, and wind up creating pseudo-problems for ourselves.When we talk about the word "real" for example. Philosophers often want to know about ultimate reality, and they wind up asking strange questions like "How can we be certain that this telephone is real?" In this context "real" is taken metaphysically. What is being asked about is the ultimate metaphysical status of the telephone. But what do we ordinarily mean when we ask "Is that telephone real?" Austin would argue that if we pick up the phone and we are able to use it to call people then this is all we ordinarily mean when we say the phone is real, and that is just what it means to be a real phone. This is one example of how Austin analyzes our everyday use of words in order to dissolve their metaphysical use, and the pseudo-problems the metaphysical use of terms gives rise to. We know the difference between a real phone and a fake phone in our everyday lives (of course, the reader should keep in mind that the term "real" can mean many different things in different contexts, I am simply focusing on one meaning which contrasts "real" to "fake" for the sake of an example).Austin is a very clear writer, or speaker, since I guess this volume was based on lectures. Whatever the case may be, the book is very readable even without a strong background in analytic philosophy. Austin is a great polemicist, for lack of a better term, by which I simply mean: he is great at constructing arguments, and reducing other people's arguments to absurdity. The book really is a pleasure to read and contains a wealth of interesting insights. More than I have been able to contain, or even hint at, in this review. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in analytic philosophy, language philosophy, theories of perception, or epistemological problems.

I am a fan of John L. Austin. This is a great book with keen insights and critiques of the sense-data theory. The book came in such a timely manner--thank goodness!--since a paper I was writing depended on it. The book was in good condition : ) No complaints here at all.

NOT because I want to learn to sew, that is perfectly normal. BUT I bought this kit for myself rather than an 8-12 year old. What I like about it is it is very clear, very concise, yet has a lot of really good information. One of my favorite pages is the one that describes the different types of fabric and what they feel and look like when worn. It even has a page that tells you how to make your own felted wool. I mean seriously? Plus I think I could easily use the small patterns for the dolls and mathematically enlarge them to be big enough for me. And its a much less expensive dress form than the one I want for $80....Anyways, yes I'm a nerd but I really like this. My sewing class will find it hilarious :) I recommend this for any new sewer, be them young or old :)

I brought this for my 9 year old niece who lives in another state. I of course had to read it first and was so pleased with this book. I am thinking about buying another one for my collection so if she has any questions I can pull out my book as reference. Page 28 shoes how to make a dress, skirt, and purse out of a sock. It is so good I think it deserve a special place in my library.

Bought this as a Christmas gift for my 10 year old niece. She loves fashion and she loved this handbook! I've already taken her to a fabric store a couple times so that she can create different designs. Would definitely recommend.I had to order this twice. There was no book with the first package! Luckily, Amazon was able to ship a replacement quickly, and I got it [whole!] before Christmas. Make sure you receive all the pieces if you order this.

I got this book for my almost 9 year old granddaughter and she loved it. She immediately cut out a pattern and made a professional looking dress. She had no problems doing this and she absolutely loved it. Would highly recommend it.

What a great book! It is awesome for my daughter and she spends hours on it. It is great for beginners to experts and has a lot of different designs based on the sewing levels of skill so it will last her a long time. Already she has made tons of little outfits for her barbies and built a lot of confidence with sewing. Great gift for a 8-14 year old girl. Love it!

I gave this book as a birthday present to my 9 yo daughter. She immediately started to create all kind of clothes and try it on the mannequin. And still playing with this kit.

My daughter received this as a gift for her 9th birthday and she loves it. She has used several of the patterns to make dresses for her barbie doll. She has never liked playing with barbie's but loves designing clothes for them and dressing them up. I like how this book is easy to understand and truly geared toward young children, but is not too cutesy. The author put a lot of care into writing this book and it's very well done.

This was the 'perfect' addition to my little niece's starter kit of 'designing and sewing' !! She is only 6 but after drawing 'fairy' dresses, she is now putting her idea's on this little form !! It's fun to watch her imagination take flight !! Thank you Amazon for 'another' wonderful product to encourage little ones !!!

Cesar writings and DVD'S guided me to train my first pitbull rescue to be an ambassador for the breed! I made the decision to change training to so called "positive reinforcement" for my 2nd pitbull rescue and that lasted about 6 days. My cute 6 month old pitbull turned into an out of control over excited nightmare that could sit, down, stay etc.. but not chill.I went back to old faithful and purchased this book for a reminder course. 48 hours later I'm laying on my couch with my 6 month old pitbull puppy chilling out next to me writing this review. Thank god for Cesar....

I purchased this book, not really needing a list of 98 tips for my dog, but thinking that might be a nice format for a change in a selection of dog training books I’m reading in advance of our new family member. Well, I’m not putting the book down able to take any tips in particular. A few principles, maybe. If you want a book that is part dog training philosophy and part human self help, this book is for you. I appreciate where Cesar Milan is coming from with this book, albeit a bit self indulgent. He certainly needed a cathartic journalling experience. And although I agree with having an understanding of pack leadership as a starting point with dog training, I don’t think it’s the only consideration, and believe that the evolution of how humans have bred dogs might have mixed things up a bit for his overwhelming firm philosophy. I’m not super appreciative of his easy dismissal of an alternative, it just makes his job super easy. An interesting read, but don’t start and end here for dog training.

If you've watched his TV show you probably already know the vast majority of this stuff. I did pick up a few new things. For instance, there is a very detailed explanation of EXACTLY how to walk your dog which is one of the most critical aspects of training. There is a chapter on misbehaving which was particularly useful in which he addresses overexcitment, aggression, anxiety, fear of loud noises, running away, obsession, hoarding, excessive barking, separation anxiety, and unwanted chewing. Short case studies are also presented. The training methods are SIMPLE but not necessarily EASY to implement because (as with any dog training method) it requires consistency on the part of the human.There are some personal stories from Cesar's life woven throughout the book which some reviewers apparently found unnecessary. I didn't mind. In fact, I think they help illustrate Cesar's overall philosophy of dog training - that a stable, well-balanced human is the best pack leader.I would recommend this book, especially if you have not watched ALL of Cesar's shows.

This is a great read for any dog owner. I didn’t realize how much more exercise my dog neeeded nor did I realize how important it was to set boundaries for her. This is a great basic and introductory book to training and owning a dog. Since reading this book I’ve changed how I approach problems we have been having with our dog and since then she is like a different dog! Her anxiety is less, she doesn’t beg at the table but most importantly my dog and son are relaxed around each other. I recommend also watching Cesar’s shows and learning how to read your dog’s body language.

I bought this book to learn useful information about how to train my puppy. The book did not get me much closer to that goal. The majority of the book focuses on Cesar's training philosophy without providing anything concrete to actually put into practice. I did learn about his beliefs, such as the importance of being the pack leader, and how great his fulfillment formula can be for training dogs and for bettering humans as well. The problem is I didn't learn anything about how to actually do it!! Its frustrating because I do believe that his techniques work, they just aren't provided in this book. I have actually learned more on his website than I did reading this book. I think the majority of pet owners, especially new pet owners are like me and looking for real, practical knowledge. This book is not for them.

I purchased a few of Cesar Millan's other books and noticed they all said the same thing. The issue is for those of us who watch every episode of his we learn nothing new. Now with this book it basically combines everything from his other books in to one. I would recommend this book if you are a new puppy owner and if you have never read his other books before then this would be a great add on.

I purchased this as a gift for my niece who recently got a dog. I read thru it before giving it to her and was surprised that I, a lifetime dog owner, actually learned a thing or two.

I'm a fan of Cesar's from way back, particularly having owned a rotty who had a tendency to be a fear-biter. This book is somewhat general, ith reiterations of the importance of "calm, submissive energy" etc., that is, all the Cesar staples. Still, it's not bad to have them all together for a read, when one is orientating oneself to a new dog - as I was with my new rotty, when I bought the book.

I purchased this chapter book about two years ago when my daughter was just 5 1/2 years old. Since then, both my husband and I have read the story to her several times. Now that she's in Second Grade, she is able to read for herself--thank goodness--and has done so on at least two occasions. LOL The story is very sweet, and there are some lovely illustrations throughout the book. I have to admit that when I first read the story (I've had to read it several times! LOL) I enjoyed it almost as much as my daughter did.In this story, Aurora plans a surprise party for the three good fairies. Trying to keep the party a surprise, however, is easier said that done, considering that at every turn Aurora discovers the fairies are close behind. LOL This is a really cute story, and is sure to delight any little one who enjoys princess stories. My daughter loves it and highly recommends it.

Like another reviewer, the pages of the book started coming out on the first reading (I should have returned it). With continued readings, it got worse. I've had the binding repaired twice, but after more use, the pages fell out again. We've never had a Disney book fall apart before, and I expect better from a brand like Disney. Btw, this takes place after Aurora got married. My girl would like more stories like that for all the princesses.

My four-year-old loves princesses (imagine that!), but especially Aurora. Her older brother has a lot of activities that she must be patient while he participates. I purchased this to give us a quiet activity to do while he is doing his thing and we are waiting (and watching). Being read aloud to is a terrific literacy-building activity, and I enjoy seeing her expressions when I'm telling the story. Of course, she'd like to see more images (because she's four). I realize it's a chapter book, but she still wants more visual stimulation (thus, the four and not five stars).

I bought this for an almost four year old as a way to introduce her to chapter books. We read a chapter or two a night and with her favorite characters it is a hit! I bought 4 others for her and I'm glad to have her into reading these types of books! I'm going to introduce new chapter books and characters when we finish these 5

We recently discovered these short chapter books at a book fair. My daughter LOVES them! She's usually so hyper at night when it gets to be bed time, but these have really calmed her down. There aren't very many pictures, so she really has to listen to the story and create the image in her mind. I love the time that we have together when reading these!

Book is so damaged its unreadable to review.

We (my 5.5 and 3.5 year old girls) are transitioning from ALL picture books to something a little more substantial. Even the little one can sit through several pages without looking at pictures - and I watch her eyes glaze over a bit, while she's imagining the story in her head.It's a very simple story that is easy to understand and we read ours, a few chapters at a time, over a week or so.PS - I've written the same review for this and the Belle version of this book. They're both the same level and fun for kids!

My daughter LOVES these books! She's only four, but has no problem paying attention and is highly motivated to try her hand at reading. We read a "chapter" a night, and she's always begging for more. They're sweet, simple stories with an occasional illustration.

First of all I love Iyanla Vanzant so much for being such an authentic person who really understands how vulnerable our souls can be.The prayers in this book are written from the insight to how fragile we can be sometimes if not most times and therefore be in need of a way back to our Inner Strength through spiritual faith.My own personal experience when reading each meditation is a feeling of being comforted, understood and deeply cared for by the Higher Being in me.The prayers are beautifully simple and I feel anyone who considers themselves to be a spiritual being and is looking for a deeper alignment with God will definitely love this book.Thank you so much Iyanla!

This book is a wonderful collection of prayers for all occasions, when you're feeling anxious, thankful, overwhelmed or confused. You can read it each day and say a prayer according to your life that day. Its a way to speak with God everyday and not necessarily complain or ask Him for something, but rather just talk with Him.Its small and light and you can take it anywhere you go.I bought this book because I wanted to repair my relationship with God. I went to Catholic School for 18 years and was very much at odds with what I was taught. But I knew that even if I didn't belive like a Catholic, I believed. And I wanted to be able to talk to God in a beautiful way. This book certainly helped me do that.Buy it, you won't regret it.

Praying is the best way to communicate with God. I love this book it is a very easy way to communicate with God. Not your typical prayers but there is a prayer for every situation in this book.

The examples of various prayers were open and honest communication with your higher source. It was all the things I wanted to say to God but didn't know how to be so open. It helped me develop a better prayer life.
