Rudy Rucker is a writer and a mathematician who worked for twenty years as a Silicon Valley computer science professor. He is regarded as contemporary master of science-fiction, and received the Philip K. Dick award twice. His thirty published books include both novels and non-fiction books on the fourth dimension, infinity, and the meaning of computation. A founder of the cyberpunk school of science-fiction, Rucker also writes SF in a realistic style known as transrealism, often including himself as a character. Saucer Wisdom is Rudy Rucker's "nonfiction" book describing the travels of a man he meets after one of his lectures who has been in contact with aliens. Rucker asks the man, Frank Shook, to ask various questions of the aliens--about the future of communications, bioengineering, travel, the nature of time, and transhumanity. The book amounts to a future history of the world according to Rudy Rucker, the elements of which are familiar to anyone who has read Rucker's other books (in particular the Software/Wetware/Freeware/Realware series, and especially the last two).The "nonfiction" narrative structure makes for a more entertaining book than this would otherwise be--while the future developments Rucker envisions are interesting, without the story it would be more like a series of encyclopedia entries.The conceit within the book of this book being popular thousands of years in the future is pretty ridiculous--this is not one of Rucker's better works.

As Bruce Sterling says in the forward of this book, the saucer/alien plot and motifs are merely a literary device to help serve up some wildly fascinating conjectures about the future of human technology and development.As a lover of good science fiction and futurology I usually keep up on the current subjects but this book really put forward some exotic ideas on what it is to be human and whether technology is a friend or foe to our spiritual development. I was pleasantly surprised at one of the theses in this book that, properly used and properly seen, technology is not our foe but is merely one of the means to bring humankind to a higher plane of awareness. There are so many people who spend all their lives accumulating things as if those things are ends in and of themselves. But these people miss the point. If they put their hearts to gaining the right kinds of material things they would see the higher transformative power of those things. In other words, let's say, a car can either be just another toy to help you be a chick magnet or that car can actually be a material thing to convey you on a spiritual journey. These are the ideas that Frank Shook brings back to Rudy (at least some of the underlying messages that were important to me).Also the musings on our anthropomorphic desires versus the vast possibility of other alien desires in the universe was amusing. I'm sure people will have many, many other thoughts.Unfortunately, for me, I have this pretentious need for a book to have a literary execution that's equal to the ideas being presented and "Saucer Wisdom" was a little too lightweight. It felt more like a "snack" book than a main course. It felt too much like easy feel-good physics on the same level as "The Dancing Wu-Li Masters." Real physics is weighted down by those pesky little calculations that indicate some physical process is doable in the universe we live in.So, in short, some interesting mental gymnastics but the plot felt too cobbled together.

In trying to treat this as a serious but disguised scientific or mystical text, some people seem, in my view, to have completely missed the point.*This book is a blast. It's hilarious. Even Buce Sterling's introduction is taking the mickey. From the 'Frank Shook' charcacter and all his bizarre friends and enemies through the eccentric aliens to the whacked-out DMT-fantasy drawings, Saucer Wisdom is one big riff on the insanity of Californian culture with all its weirdness and UFO fixations, its spaced-out hippies and way-too-serious hackers and crackers. It's also a nostalgic but knowingly humorous retrospective on past visions of how the future would be, saturated with that Golden Age of sci-fi nutty predictiveness, the less paranoid days when UFOs came to bring us cosmic messages of love and peace, and when everyone knew that in the future they would have intelligent machines and telepathy and a robot dog for the kids. The humour of Saucer Wisdom is moderated by a humane and tolerant vision of humanity: while Rucker is laughing, he's not patronising. This is not vicious satire, it is a gently self-mocking and whimsical journey.So forget any 'messages', forget serious sci-fi, just knock-back, drift away, and smile to yourself for a few hours. Lovely.*At least that's what I thought. If Rudy Rucker really is being serious (which I doubt somehow), then Saucer Wisdom is still funny but for very different reasons!

This has to be one of the most original science fiction books I have read in a long time. This book snagged me right from the start......and theres even some funny parts.

If you've read Rudy's other works, you should get around to this one. It sat on my shelf for ten years at least before I finally got to it, during which time Rudy cranked out several more novels, in which he spins really fun stories using the technologies that he catalogs in this book. So for me, it's kind of like being a Trekkie and finding a catalog of Enterprise-era technology. It's essentially a cheery book, a merry march toward the endless future of trans-human existence. The biggest obstacles to the book are the marketing. The cover's stupid ugly. Spare parts? Sterling's foreword is weird. Why deflate the premise of the book before the reader gets to it? Neither essential nor thrilling, yet meaningful and enlightening. Memorable for Rudy's frank self-disclosure that attaining permanent sobriety is his greatest wish. Well, he may wish for it, but I'm glad he got lit.

James Hull Miller, a graduate of Princeton, combined an academic background in literature and philosophy with many years of actual theatre experience, twelve of which were spent in teaching. From 1958 until his death in 2007, he was a freelance designer and consultant. His field of special interest was the development of a new stagecraft for the theatre which took the form of freestanding scenery. He designed numerous open-stage theaters based on this system of stagecraft for colleges, communities, student unions, schools and churches. For many years he maintained a scenic studio, the Arts Lab, in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he gave workshops as well as constructed sets for use in a variety of spaces.Mr. Miller was a Charter Member of the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology and in 1978 was named a Fellow of the Institute. He was also a Founding Member of the American Society of Theatre Consultants.

This is written for set people assuming you know how to build everything and rig everything. This has a couple of good tips for 2 sided sets, but that is about it. It does not tell you how to build a practical set that you can fold up and put on a truck or in a van. THe information on bracing and hardware is minimal. The emphasis is very much on 2 dimensional flying flats, not shed or house units, or even booths or trade show exhibits. Meh.

he wrote several books on self-supporting scenery, set building and set lighting all on a shoe string budget. The books are older but the concepts are still valid ... you may find the lighting stuff of questionable value unless you, like me, find real theater lights and LED technology outside your budget. BTW all the books are very similar and even use the same drawings in many cases.

This guide included some very helpful material - I stage direct for a small college w/ a small budget and this book was extremely useful. I especially enjoyed the the set design for The Barber of Seville. From prompting ideas for small yet effective and efficient set designs to actual detailed structural integrity guidance, this book is a treasure for any performing arts organization. --Glay Marie Posch, Hou., TX

I gave this book to our set builder in our community theatre group. He says it is full of good ideas and will be a big help on our next plays.

Great book for beginners.

I purchased this book to add to my collection and found that it contained less information than one might find in a basic stagecraft book found at any college bookstore. It is my opinion that some of the staging ideas though sound if done properly could be hazardous otherwise. I suggest that if you are not experienced in stagecraft to purchase this book along with a companion stagecraft book and pull from both sources to design and build your show. There are some good suggestions for easy to move lightweight pageant grade sets and this source should not be overlooked. I simply sugest that you not use this as your only reference. To the experienced builder - skip this text all together the designs in the book are old and you most likely will kick your self and say I know how to put plywood platforms on sawhorses why did I buy this!.

I bought this book hoping to learn some new ways to build small touring sets. Unfortunately only the first couple of chapters were really applicable to my situation. Even then, the directions for building were sketchy for non-technical types of people. I guess that the diagrams will make sense to someone who is used to building sets, but I am not and the language used is too technical for me. I did get some nice ideas about using screens and blinds, though.

I was born and grew up in the midwest (Missouri), so I'm somewhat familiar with the fresh ingredients that are so abundant and delicious there but so nonexistent ... or mediocre ... elsewhere. US-71 -- the highway that runs from the Canadian border in northern Minnesota, that passes within shouting distance of Two Inlets Township in north central Minnesota (not far from Bemidji, one of my favorite vacation stops, where I had my first taste of walleye in 2001) where Amy Thielen's cabin is located -- that same US-71 highway passes through my old south Kansas City neighborhood about two blocks away from my former home. I grew up helping my mother tend a large garden every summer -- fresh corn, melons, beans, okra, tomatoes -- a mother who routinely produced a pantry full of canned tomato sauce, apple butter, spiced peaches, pickles -- all from the produce we grew in the backyard.Reading "The New Midwestern Table" is a bit like coming home for me, but to a more modern updated version of "home cooking." In other words, these aren't exactly my mother's/grandmother's recipes, but they do throw a huge spotlight on the best that the midwest has to offer in terms of local ingredients and the melting pot of internatinoal influences contributed by early settlers.The first thing that struck me about this book: Amy Thielen can write! Seriously, you must read the introduction as well as each chapter and recipe intro if you want to get a real sense for what NEW midwestern cooking can be when in the hands of someone who totally understands its roots and who is also sufficiently well-versed in modern "technique" to create new variations/versions for today's palates. Ms. Thielen has a way with words and tells her story exquisitely.And the recipes? Creative, flavorful, solid. If you're looking for "quick and easy" or "5-ingredients or less," this is probably not the book for you. Not that there aren't some that come together fairly quickly -- but that's not the focus here. This is about seasonal ingredients available fresh, prepared in ways that highlight the flavors. Yes, some do take quite a lot of prep, and some of the ingredients can be a bit tricky to find (one of the soup recipes calls for boneless shoulder bear roast, which the author claims has " ... a flavor that can be described as falling somewhere between beef and pork, but maybe with a tumbler of port wine on the side— not unlike wild boar" -- beef can be substituted if bear is unavailable).My usual practice is to make 3 recipes from any cookbook that I review, and I followed that practice with this one.1. Classic Beef Pot Roast with Pistachio Salt -- made with a well-marbled beef chuck roast, seared quickly on the stove top, then slow roasted on a bed of onions with garlic for awhile, then accompanied by carrots, turnips, celery, and cherry tomatoes to finish, all topped with a pistachio/parsley/garlic mixture (sort of like a gremolata). This is actually similar to a roast my mother made, but with a few more steps. The slow covered roasting produced a succulent tender juicy roast, with veggies that haven't been cooked to mush. I'll make this again, but I'll substitute parsnips for the turnips (I just like the flavor better).2. Baked Apples with Sour Cherries, Rosemary, and Yogurt Whip -- This one wasn't difficult at all, and came together quickly. Apples stuffed with a mixture of dried sour cherries, butter, vanilla, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Rosemary, lemon juice and water goes into the pan with the apples, and you just bake them for a total of about an hour (there's some fiddling with them mid-bake to create a flavored glaze, but it's easy). Serve with the whipped yogurt (whipping cream whipped with sugar, then yogurt is mixed in and it's whipped again). This was wonderful!! Living in the Pacific NW, apples and cherries are standard fare up here, so this one is definitely a keeper.3. Baked Chicken with Porcini Spice Rub -- the recipe calls for a whole skin-on bone-in chicken cut into 8 pieces; I used 4 breasts and 4 large thighs. This is a non-fussy very basic simple recipe -- chicken pieces rubbed with a mixture of spices and ground dried porcini mushrooms, rested for 20 minutes or so, then baked on a foil-lined baking sheet. The spice/mushroom rub makes this dish special: coriander, allspice, mustard seed, sage, and nutmeg with the pulverized earthiness of the mushrooms. Very tasty, indeed, and another keeper.Some of these recipes probably won't work in my kitchen, primarily due to the region-specific ingredients featured in some of them (I haven't found a Pacific NW source for walleye, for example, nor do I expect to). But enough of them will, and I look forward to trying more of these dishes later this year when more fresh produce is in season.But the book is worth having for the accompanying narrative -- it really is that good.

This is the best cookbook I've ever bought. In fact, I've bought this 3 times now. The original book I bought, one to replace in when I accidentally left it somewhere.... and as a gift for my Dad (Who also loves it). The chocolate chip cookie recipe alone is worth the cost. Everyone I've made them for swear they're the best they've ever had. Fried onion dip was a huge hit with our friends too... And my Dad who is a huge beer cheese soup snob thinks this surpasses the best he'd ever had at a steakhouse 20 years ago that until now... he hasn't shut up about. I haven't made anything from this book that wasn't at minimum pretty darn good if not spectacular.

Amy Thielen has managed to rescue Midwestern cooking from canned biscuit and cream of whatever soup mushiness and returned the table to the kinds of food our grandmothers made. . .with love, and care, and fresh, basic ingredients.Thielen has a conversational, storytelling style that compels you to want to run to the store *right now* and pick up everything you need to survive with nothing but this book.In the few weeks since I've owned this cookbook I have learned why my pot roasts were always turning out so tough, I found a way to make the best onion dip ever without a powdery mix, and my 14 year old son made excellent chocolate chip cookies from scratch (And stocked our freezer with cookie dough as well).The recipes are wholesome, delicious, inspiring and healthful. Most will easily feed a family of 4-6, but since the aim in the Midwest is to be hospitable, most will stretch even farther with little effort.I may even get over my fear of baking pies. . .I'll keep you posted.Meanwhile this book is already gravy splattered and flour sprinkled and sits alongside my favorites. . ."The Joy of Cooking" and "The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Guide to Cooking". They are quickly getting edged out!

I can't believe they cancelled her show Heartland Table. Amazing and different food and recipes. it's always a treat to stumble onto new and different types of American cuisine. Rural Minnesota/upper midwest cooking is something very new and different to us in the South. We have enjoyed making several of the recipes. Do yourself a favor and make the fried chicken recipe with mashed potatoes and gravy and the honey garlic swiss chard. It was a labor intensive meal but OMG it was off the charts good. One of the best meals we've ever eaten. My wife and I are both born and raised in the South and we think this fried chicken recipe is AMAZING! I just made it again a couple nights ago (just the chicken) and it rocked again. Kudos to Amy Thielen.

This is such a wonderful cookbook! And it is exactly as advertised: new midwestern cooking. The ingredients are not overly complicated, but there is something familiar, yet unique, about all of the recipes. Perfect examples: Classic Pot Roast with Pistachio Salt and Baked Chicken with Porcini Spice Rub. While I am not officially a midwesterner (east coaster here), my parents are from Ohio and I have family in Michigan. So when I was having trouble deciding what to get my aunt and her husband for Christmas, I remembered this cookbook. The chapter on lake fish sold me. While the ingredients in most chapters are accessible throughout the country, the book's inclusion of lake fish demonstrated to me that this is a book that is serious about midwestern cooking. When my aunt's husband opened the book and saw a recipe for walleye, he was over the moon. Overall, this would be a great addition to any cookbook collection, but especially for someone living in the midwest.

This is not what I expected. This is not a USCG copy of comdtinst m16672.2 navigation rules international-inland. This some horsecrap copy of it and it's not complete. Stay away from this. The people that rated this 5 star are either being paid or have never had a copy of the real thing.

Being an ex-mariner I was interested in bringing myself up-to-date on the rules. I had a lot of previous experience at reading, understanding, being tested and using the rules - on the high sea and inland. I found this verison to be useful. The publishers have added a few very helpful additions to the standard USCG version. Some of these adds are the index, online links mentioned, hi-lited corrections and list of recent corrections. Unfortunatley there are still typographical errors. I would have thought that the USCG and/or the publisher (whoever is responsible for them) would have had a proof read before publishing in an effort to eliminate these. These small errors might create a doubt in the readers mind regards the correctness of the whole contents. Having said this I can still recommend this book to all those with a need-to know these rules.

Since the USCG last published the Navigation Rules in 1999 there have been a few NTM additions that have been released which affect COLREGS. The Paradise Cay Publications Inc. version does an outstanding job integrating these NTM into the COLREGS with a gray background box which brings the readers attention immediately to the changes. Additionally, they have provided a slightly more useful table of contents which they refer to as an "Annotated Contents". Most importantly, they provide you with their website, which lists all the NTM which affect your navigation rules, so that you can keep your book updated in the decades to come. The Paradise Cay Publications Inc. version has clear diagrams with legible explanations. With the ProStar version it is like you are looking at a blurry copy of a blurry copy; the diagrams are just not as legible, especially the font within the diagrams.If you want a handy to use, up-to-date (and easy to keep that way), and legible copy of the Navigation Rules, go with the Paradise Cay Publications Inc. version.

Good basic list of the rules and probably sufficient for a USCG inspection. That said, for the same price I would purchase (and have purchased ) the full Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook, US Coast Guard with the rules, explanations and data. It is a much better reference source.

Very thorough, but not for the layman. USCG requires Captains to carry this book or something similar when vessel is used for any type of charter with paying customers. Those that are certified Captains will find this book complete and useful. Those that have not had any type of advanced training for operating a vessel will find this book to be complicated and confusing. For them, would suggest an abbreviated version that gives the basics.

This is NOT the book you are looking for. This is NOT published by the USCG. On page 3 the word "center" is spelled the British way - "centre" you can see it in the online preview if you click on the cover of the book. This is basically a synopsis of the full Rules of Navigation. This is NOT the book the USCG requires vessels over 12 meters in length to carry. If you are a recreational boater, just getting in to boating this book would be an okay place to start but you might as well pay $2 more and get the real deal.

It is always good to have a US Coast Guard book on your boat for quick up dates on rules of the road. Not bad to have sitting out in plan sight in your cabin so if you are boarded by the Coast Guard they know you take your boating seriously. Has a good contents guide so you can find items quickly that you want to familiarize yourself with. I would also recommend "The One-Minute Guide to the Nautical Rules of the Road".

COLREGS has set navigation rules since 1972.This is the Kindle version that I keep on my cellphone. I also have a book version on my boat and at home.Even the smallest boats should have a copy onboard.As an example, it clearly defines right-of-way vessel vs. burdened vessel.One of the most important rules is that ANY vessel overtaking another is burdened, even if the overtaking vessel is a sailboat under sail.There's many rules that every boater should be aware of!!!!
