Crucial Questions SeriesI recently picked up all 14 of the Crucial Questions series for free due to Ligonier Ministries decision to offer them for free in the Kindle format. Apparently these titles have been around a while. This first title was first published in 1983. There have been 2 revisions since 1983, one in 1999 and one in 2009. This one of course is the 2009 version.I like that Ligonier is doing this, because these books are really gems. Essentially I could describe it as a long booklet. It's long enough to be meaty, but short enough to hold the reader's attention. A fast reader could get through these in about 2-3 hours.Who Is Jesus?This first title in the series is all about Jesus of course. This is an appropriate way to open the series in my opinion. Specifically, Sproul discusses: the real Jesus (how we know the real Jesus from false ones), the titles of Jesus in scripture, and the life of Jesus (what Jesus accomplished). This is very simple and straightforward.Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?The title of chapter 1 of course plays off the famous game show "To Tell the Truth" (1956 - 2002). The idea of this chapter is how we can tell the real Jesus apart from false ones. What Sproul is really trying to accomplish in this chapter I think is to separate the wheat from the chaff: "There are vast numbers of portraits of Jesus in the art galleries of this world. These images are often so conflicting that they offer little help in achieving an accurate picture of what Christ looked like during the period of His incarnation. This multiplicity of images parallels the widespread confusion about Jesus' identity that exists in the world today."Here are some of the false Christ's Sproul discusses:1) A Christ born of empty speculation2) The philosopher's Christ3) A recycled Christ4) A Christ of compromise5) A watered down Christ6) A powerless Christ7) An inglorious Christ8) A symbolic Christ9) a Christ with no power10) A scholarly ChristSproul touches on the historical search for the "Real Jesus". The focus of these scholars was to get behind the sources (scripture primarily) and find the real Jesus way back there in the mists of time. Then we had the liberal scholars who of course found a liberal Jesus. The existentialists found an existentialist Jesus, etc. Sproul critiques the work of the Jesus seminar, who try to cut away all but a historical core. Sproul identifies where the real problem with all this lies: "Brunner's verdict was as simple as it was inflammatory. The problem, he said is unbelief." Sproul emphasizes that our picture of Jesus affects everything important in life. We need to see Jesus for who he is in the pages of scripture, not in these other places.The Titles of JesusSproul discusses the biblical record of the major titles given to Jesus there. Jesus is the Christ (Messiah). This title ties the Old and New Testament together well. The expectation of a Messiah in Judaism is shown as well as how Christ fulfilled these Messianic expectations.Next we have the title, The Son of David. This pointed to the kingly aspect of Jesus. While this title is certainly true, the main mission in the first coming of Christ was not his kingly rule in an earthly sense, but his kingly rule of men's hearts: the kingdom of God is within you. There will come a day when all the political structures of the earth will be overthrown, but Jesus first coming was not intended for that.Jesus is also known by the title of suffering Servant. The focus here of course is the persecution that Jesus experienced by the Jewish leaders and the Romans in the execution of Jesus. Isaiah 53 focuses on his bodily sacrifice. His sacrifice was a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Those who place their faith in him will be saved on the day of the Lord (his return).Another important title was Son of Man. This title highlighted the humanity of Jesus. Jesus was after all full human, and fully divine, though his divinity was veiled during his time here. Sproul says: "The words the church settled on in A.D. 451 were "vere homo, vere Deus." The formula meant that Jesus was truly man and truly God, calling attention to His two natures.Next, there is discussion of the title Jesus is Lord. This of course demonstrates Jesus' authority. Christians throughout the centuries have demonstrated their allegiance to Jesus in their willingness to suffer at the hands of men rather than deny their Lord.Next Sproul discusses the title Son of God. This is the complementary point to the discussion on Jesus as Son of Man. The divinity of Jesus is emphasized here. This has ever been the confession of the church. Jesus is confessed as the unique Son of God. Jesus is the divine incarnation of the Word of God. Therefore Jesus is not some creature, however exalted, but Jesus is part of the being of God, a member of the Trinity.The Life of JesusWe have in this chapter discussion of the ministry of Jesus. From the beginning of Jesus life, we see miracle after miracle. His birth was supernatural. His mother, Mary, conceived Jesus with knowing a man. The virgin birth shows that Jesus was no ordinary child. We then have the fact that Jesus birth was attended by angels announcing to shepherds the joyous news. The baptism of Jesus demonstrated his special status as the Son of God. The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness showed his victory over temptation. Where Adam had failed in the garden, Jesus succeeded in the wilderness while fasting for 40 days.For some reason Sproul skips the miracles of Jesus and the teaching ministry of Jesus and heads straight to the passion week. Sproul writes: "His death may illustrate those things. Rather, is is a cosmic event, an atoning death; it is a curse that is poured out on Christ for us." Sproul then goes on to discuss the resurrection and the fact that the resurrection is the culmination of everything Christ accomplished. It was tangible evidence that his sacrifice was accepted and that the sting of death was taken away. Finally, the ascension of Jesus is highlighted. the angels told the disciples to quit staring into the sky where Jesus had gone. They had work to do. The church age was just beginning. Jesus promise to be with them through the ministry of the Spirit would soon be demonstrated on the day of Pentecost.Book RecommendationI think this book, "Who is Jesus" presents us with an incredible summation of the significance of Jesus of Nazareth. We see his human side and his divine status. We see Jesus, not as philosophers do or those in the academy see him, but as he is presented to us in scripture. We see Jesus who asks each of us to consider who he really is and his claims on our lives. Who is Jesus? Read this book and get a clearer picture. I recommend this book for individuals and group study.

The author packs a lot of meaty information in a short book. This is part of a series that looks at the basics of Christianity. Of course, what is more basic than determining who Jesus is? The first chapter introduces the importance of understanding who the real Jesus is rather than the Jesus of our making or our imagination. The second chapter looks at Jesus in light of the titles assigned to him. The final chapter highlights Jesus' life, focusing primarily on his birth, baptism, temptation, passion, resurrection, and ascension. The author discusses how Jesus' titles and the major events of his life impact our lives. This book serves as an introduction to Jesus. Since it is very short, it can only deal with some of the highlights. That is not to say that it is shallow. Sproul provides many tidbits of information and insights that I didn't know or hadn't considered before in relation to Jesus and his times.

Short and succinct, this book answers the question of "who is the real Jesus"? Although I had to look up an occasional word, it is readable and understandable. Although it is a summary of what Christians should know about Christ, the emphasis on the importance of the Ascension is something often overlooked. Others have raised questions about the target audience. It may be too advanced for new Christians or unbelievers and too simple for theology students. However, I think it is quite useful for lay Christians who want a clearer understanding of their Savior.

R.C. Sproul has captured that which so many have fondled and faultered at grasping in a brief, information packed, enlightening exposition on the identity of Jesus. From the weight of the witness of the scriptures and the authors to the revelation of the nature and work of Jesus, the author elucidates skillfully the awesome significance of Jesus to the church, to the doctrines of the word, to the faith of individual believers and to the establishing and grounding of a sound theology in Christology. However I would have loved to see more discussions on the other titles given to Jesus etc. But the purpose of the book required a more precise and terse discussion on the person of Jesus Christ. Therefore I say God bless you to the author and his team who and God Almighty for such an encouraging, informative and insightful and scrioturally based piece of Literature.

This is an in-depth study of who Jesus is. It’s not a book for the new believer, because it digs deep into theological thought and philosophy. Yet, for all it’s depth, it only begins the study of who Christ is. I think that would be true for any book. However, I recommend this book for those who are ready to move from milk to meat in their Christian study.

The titanic influence of this man makes Him a chief target of the arrows of criticism and a prime object of revision according to the interpreter's prejudice. Thus, the portrait of the historical Jesus has been altered to suit the fancies of those seeking to line Him up on their side, to make of Him an ally in a host of militant causes, many of which are mutually exclusive. In the theologian's laboratory, Jesus is treated like a chameleon; He is forced to adapt to the backdrop painted by the theologian.

I learned things from this little volume that I had not known before, despite being a Christian for many years now. In most cases that's because I had not given much study to those topics. I do wish more Scripture references had been provided, but that's about the only major fault I find with this delightful book.

I began this series with this, the first in the Crucial Questions series by R. C. Sproul, as part of my daily studies. I determined to get back to basics and it doesn't get more basic than the question of who Jesus is. I enjoyed this small book. It has only three chapters but is deep in doctrine and rich in content. I look forward to the next book in this series.

No. Just no. The book starts with a beautiful color photo of food on the cover but, on the inside, the photos are poor quality black n white photos. The recipes are ok but the point calculations are impossible to believe because there are no serving sizes mentioned! One recipe was listed as 4 points but when I recreated it in the WW app, it came out to 48 points. It must be a serving for 10, but who would know. I can't forget to mention the typos and grammatical errors in this book. Although the author's name is Michael Smith, I get the sense that English isn't his first language. Don't waste your money.

The formulas don't show up work escalated and the fixings are effortlessly found in any supermarket. Also, it has proposals for substitutions inside a large number of the formulas and the quantity of focuses that involves. This book is okay. I expected some more interesting recipes. As of now, I did not find any recipe that I care to make (and I love cooking.) Personally, I have just filed this book away.

I find Jay Michaelson's writing a pleasure to read. He's very clear and easy to understand. And he adds just enough personal details and autobiographical anecdotes to introduce himself to the reader as compassionate and sensitive. He comes across as a good man whose thoughts and arguments we ought to listen to. God vs. Gay? makes the sensible argument that Judeo-Christian morality with all its emphasis on compassion, love of neighbor, help for strangers should naturally be open to understanding and accepting LGBT people. What can it mean to "love your neighbor" if you discriminate against people for simply being who they truly are and telling the truth about that? Michaelson very thoroughly explains the various supposedly anti-gay verses in the Scriptures. He writes from a highly-educated Jewish context, and explains the stories in Genesis and rules in Leviticus better than I've ever come across. And because he is a wise and broad-thinking eclectic, he can write about the Christian Scriptures as well. And then go beyond the words of any particular tradition to the "real meaning" of all religious teaching. This is a VERY good book for preparing yourself for a Biblical argument with an anti-gay opponent in a debate or with a confused and upset parent who only wants the best for their child AND needs to understand what's in the Bible and religious teachings. This is one of the best books I have read on the subject of what the Bible says (and doesn't say) on the subject of homosexual behavior. Jay Michaelson has helped to confirm and clarify my beliefs that the conventional wisdom regarding homosexuality is based on mistranslated and/or misinterpreted snippets of scripture, taken out of context and quoted without regard to the historical and cultural background that underlie these ancient writings. How many Christians today know what pederasty was, and why it is important to our understanding of both Old and New Testament passages? How many understand what a very low status women held in ancient societies, so much so, that even a "righteous" man like Lot would not hesitate to suggest that a group of vicious men rape his own two daughters rather than harm the two angelic visitors he entertained in his home? If you will take another serious look at the 19th chapter of Genesis and the 19th chapter of Judges, you will understand why it is my conviction that the men of Sodom were not even gay. Thank you, Mr. Michaelson for an objectively and comprehensively written book.

Great, thought provoking book. Michaelson tackled this difficult subject with intelligence, humor, and grace. The issue of whether or not homosexuality is portrayed as a forbidden sin in the Bible and Torah or not is often every emotional. People on both sides of the argument become angry and hateful people when they argue their case. Thankfully, Michaelson has listened to the hearts and concerns of those with whom he disagrees with and tackles the most intimate, and difficult aspects of this dilemma throughly. I enjoyed the author's intelligent writing style, but I appreciated his love for those on both sides of the issue most of all. I would quickly recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn more about this subject. Thank you Jay Michaelson.

Basing his "theology" on love Michaelson summarizes much modern thought on gay history and spirituality but does it in a very unique blend of fact and overall Biblical meaning. Just as Jesus summarized the two greatest commandments for us, Michaelson puts gay acceptance and spirituality in the framework of Biblical love, justice and mercy. I highly recommend this book.

Football, originally published in 1985, provides a historical overview and then explores specific aspects of the game (coaching, defense, pass receiving, running, etc.) and shows how the outstanding skills of certain individuals changed the way that it's played. In most cases, little new material is offered, except for a few paragraphs here and there rounding off a player's career. The foreword by O.J. Simpson has been removed and replaced with one by Troy Aikman. (In fact, any mention of Simpson's football career has been deleted. Consequently, the chapter on running backs mentions greats such as Franco Harris, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, and Jim Brown). Libraries that do not own the earlier editions will find these books enjoyable introductions to each sport.
