The University Physics book has the distinction from the College physics series to be complicated by calculus. This isn't the case. Calculus is a prominent topic when one studies kinematics and from then on, calculus isn't really a big deal. This book is the biggest book I have, for the simple fact, that there is an immense amount of material and also because they really take up a lot of space to discuss ideas. The highlight of this book is the modern physics portion, in which quantum mechanics, atomic physics, particle physics, relativity and cosmology is discussed. To me, the weakness of this book is fluid mechanics. However, there is quite enough on fluids if you want to take the MCAT, for example. There are a rich variety of problems that, when solved, allow you to pick up on certain tricks and learn different tools for attacking problems. Therefore, it is advised to pick up the solutions manual if you can. This is the only book I have in which the problem sets are just as valuable as the text.

The book is extremely well done, and this being the 12th edition this should be no surprise. The explanations of the concepts are good enough, but the real strengths of the book lie in the well-done figures, in the generous number of thoroughly explained numerical examples, and in the well thought-out problem sets at the end of each chapter. If you use this book along with the Schaum's Outline of College Physics you should have as easy a time as is possible with the subject matter.Now for what is not so good, which lies entirely in the cynical marketing strategy. I have compared the 12th edition to the 11th, and I cannot find one additional subject or chapter or even one that has been deleted. The two books seem to have identical subject matter, and that is saying quite a bit for two 1700 plus page textbooks that are supposed to be different editions. So what is different? From the publisher's own information, the difference seems to be in revised exercises, revised drawings, added sketches to worked examples, added goals at the beginning of each chapter, and other such minutia. Hardly the stuff that new editions should be made of considering the price tag. The final ploy, just to insure that the poor students are "locked into" buying a new book is the concept of the student access kit that comes with each book and acts as a personal tutor to the student. But here's the catch - once one student has opened it and used it, it is useless to any other student. So much for reselling your textbook at the end of the semester. Normally I would take off at least two stars for such blatant highway robbery, but the book is so artfully done I just can't find it in myself to do so. teaches basic and advanced physics well, but does not prepare you well enough for the "Problems" or "Challeng Problems" in the back of each chapter. The section chapters problems are what the book prepares you for, so be prepared to do some extra studying in order to understand how to solve the problem.

This is actually a pretty good physics book if you're just starting out. It has a ton of material and it goes fairly in-depth with most of the topics. My professor wasn't very good, and i so i was glad i was able to learn from the book alone. The practice problems are extremely useful and i really liked how they showed how to work them out in the textbook rather than trying to sell a separate solutions manual like so many publishers do. It's a good book and nice introduction to physics.

Young and Freedman's is much better than Halliday's. While Halliday's are problem oriented approach which teaches concepts through problems solving. Serway's is similar to Young and Freedman and explains concepts well, but it doesn't have as many difficult problems as YF. I read both the 11th and 12th Edition. They have basically the same content. Even the 9th Edition doesn't differ much from this new freshly out of oven book. Problem arrangement is pretty much the same for all the edition with some additional problems and slightly modified arrangement. I bought the older 9th edition for my class this past semester. It went well. Our problem assignments are not from the textbook. Moreover, the library has a reserved copy. I used that for reference to the textbook problems.

I am very happy with this textbook.The set up and flow of each chapter is pretty much what I would hope for. Explanations range from adequate to excellent. The diagrams and graphics are very good and clear - excellent help for visualizing what is going on. My favorite part: the chapter summaries include distilled, categorized recaps of the mathematical relationships introduced during the chapter. Chapter reviews that are excellent for reviewing the chapter.The one thing I find myself not loving is how often examples and chapter questions require the reader to flip pages back & forth, referring the reader back to a previous example, sometimes in a previous chapter, in order to obtain the given information and/or picture required for the current example/question. In all fairness, I can understand why the author did it. The book is already mammoth. I just prefer examples & questions to be self-contained, is all. A minor nuisance: not enough for me to downrate the book.(The solutions manuals are an entirely different story, but-)This textbook is outstanding.

When I finished reading the first book in this series, my main thought was what happens next? The author did a masterful job of piquing my curiosity and need to find out. From Tours to Paris is the delightful sequel and answer to my question.As she did in her first book, Linda Kovic-Skow brought me right into her world of romance and adventure and kept me turning the pages through her descriptive and engaging writing. I am with her as a twenty-something experiencing the agony and ecstacy of young love in the City of Love. Her scenic details are exquisite and brought me into the scenes. Her rollercoaster of emotions had me recalling what it was like being twenty-something again. It was an honest and believable portrayal in that she weaves in the realities of dealing with her parents, honoring their wishes as well as the many friendships she forges with her peers while over there. The fact that she made this all work –taking off for France when she didn’t know the language, then extending her stay-is a testament to her resilience, courage and creative imagination. It makes for a very engaging and satisfying read and one I highly recommend

French Illusions Book 2 follows Linda Kovic-Skow's first memoir divulging Linda's life at the age of 21 when she lived in France, but book 2 is quite different to book one - (as are a lot of true-life stories).This book is about life outside the au pair job - grappling with real-world issues of love and maturing. It's a fast fun read with many leaps in tension and I wondered what the heck would happen to Linda at every turn. Even though she's out of the French au pair context, she's still isolated and has to look to her own resources to manage.This is 1980: she's phoning 'collect' from a post office to communicate with home and has no internet, email, mobile phone, craigslist groups for instant friends, the lines of communication are vastly different and the language barriers are high. I liked how the author takes us into her experiences from the get-go and conveys how much of a learning curve she was on without ever throwing herself a pity party when things go nothing like she imagines. Her tenacity and spunk shine through.

I just finished French Illusions, both books, and enjoyed them very much. Besides telling us her story, she helps feel it, too. The idea is, as a young woman Linda wanted to learn French, and settled on the "sink or swim" method to do it. She moved to France as an au pair, and set off to learn the language, as well as the job. Her story is liberally sprinkled with French phases, which she gives you the gist of, as she did at the time. I found this intriguing as it let met share to a large extent what she must have been feeling. What fun for a 70-year old man to experience what a 20-something girl felt, I loved it.

I give this second memoir 10 stars! It was an excellent follow up to the first book and I hated to have it end. I really enjoyed reading about her experiences. Since I have a good friend who lived in Paris for 2 years, I found this memoir to be completely believable.On another note, I feel Linda Kovic-Skow is an excellent writer and I hope to read more of her work. Her story line, sentence structure and syntaxare truly professional. Her experiences in France would make a great movie!

Young woman goes to France and doesn't seem to learn a damn thing.

Found the first book in this series through a group called we love memoirs. Had to have the second as it was a delightful story. This was also delightful. Though Linda is naive & love struck I blame that on her youthfulness. I admire her since of adventure and it made for a interesting story I am glad I read.

This book was a great true story! I enjoyed reading about her adventures in France and her struggles to learn French. It follows her 1st book where it left off. Glad I got to read her story!

After reading Linda's first book, I had to read the second one to learn how it all ended. My heart just ached for this young woman who was learning some hard lessons about life and relationships while abroad in France. A captivating read. Linda is an excellent writer, and I highly recommend both books.

This book contains many nice hikes, but it's organization makes it difficult to use. While I appreciate the author's attempt to group hikes into categories, the distinction between half-day hikes and short day hikes in the "trails at a glance chart" is unclear, with many half-day hikes taking only a couple hours. I'd like to see hiking times in this overview chart; distance and elevation change would also be nice. (These are included in the details, but that requires flipping through 100 hikes). Another useful addition would be a map at the front of each section, e.g. Central Mountains, showing more clearly the location of the hikes.Overall, I estimate that about 20 of the hikes are in my preferred 5-8 mile hiking range. About half are longer than eight miles.

While this is a book about hiking, the first thing that struck me as I read this book is the quality and quantity of the photographs. Every hike has at least one color photograph, and given that they are taken in Colorado, the scenery is spectacular. The book's pages are bright-white-glossy paper, so the colors really jump out at you. The pictures really give you a feel for what you are going to see on the hike and are thus worth many thousands of words.The verbal content is excellent in its own right. The 100 hikes cover the entire state from the prairie in the east to Colorado National Monument in the west. Distance and difficulty range from a 1 mile nature stroll to 31.5 miles along the steep, rugged Continental Divide. The trail descriptions are not long, but words are used wisely and you will know about the area's history and what can be found on the hike when you are through reading. The hikes described in this book really live up to the "classic" in the book's title, as each one visits a special area, usually for scenery or geology, but sometimes for history. There are some very difficult hikes in Colorado (consider the mountains and elevation), but the author gives precise information (example: trail gains 1000 feet in the next 0.75 mile) that should allow you to steer clear of hikes beyond your ability. I recently visited Colorado and took a couple of the hikes described in this book. When I got done, I wished I had time to hike more of them.As you can probably tell by now, I really enjoyed this guide. The book could be recommended for the pictures alone, but the hiking contents lives up to the title "100 classic hikes." Hikers planning to visit Colorado will find this guide a joy, but others might find it of interest as well. Enthusiastically recommended.

The color photographs alone make this a "must have" guidebook if you enjoy hiking in Colorado. Each hike is described in some detail with a ranking of how strenuous each trek is considered. The text is concise and to the point, but gives an adequate feel of each hike. There is at least one color photo for each journey and the photos are simply superb. Many such photos were the sole reason I decided to hike some of these mountains and I was never disappointed. You can literally spend hours just pouring over the incredible photos.The quality of the book is superb. The pages are heavy glossy paper and the paperback binding holds up after major 1,000+ mile car journeys I've made with the book thrown in the backseat. If you buy one guidebook about hiking in Colorado, make it this one. I highly recommend it for the description of each trail and the stupendous photographs.

I think it's a good way to look at ideas for hikes that aren't local. perhaps there are websites that have the same info, but I thought having an all in one resource to get started was worth the price. If anyone has a great trail website that is a good resource, would love to hear about it. Until then, I've got another 90 hikes to check off my list.

A perfect supplement to teaching about the middle ages! It has amazing pictures, amazing facts and is so much fun to read together! Our primary history curriculum is "Story of the World" and this is a perfect add-on for Volume 2. I don't usually buy extra books but this one is too fun not to get!

This is a really well made book with a lot of good info. Be warned it does start out slightly dark describing killing a raiding which I could have done without on page 1 of the book. I understand this is a lot of the reality of the Viking but I do think it could have been introduced a little more gently. However I am using this for a early elementary age child where this is probably targeted at an older audience.

We did a Viking unit at school and this book was a favorite. It is visually appealing and had some fun information. The blurbs of information is in small cuncnks so it is not too imitating for new readers. It also isn’t cluttered with too much. The pictures are bright and crisp and I will be looking into others in this series.

The one caveat is that it is geared to the 7th Day Adventist faith. Wish I would have known that part up front. My son and I have just started hunting, so I thought it’d be a good idea to read a reference book on deer. This book pretty much answered all my questions and more. Some of the reproductive details might be a little much for a youngster, but the author spares no details from his observations. As such, he can’t be accused of not being thorough! Depending on the reader’s maturity, this is probably a high school age read.It’s organized in a cool way, in that it sort of follows a deer’s life through a calendar year. It obviously covers food and habits, and also includes some quirky observations from the author and some hunting strategies.Anyway, his is a well written book that is what it claims to be. I just finished it, and while I’ve got some other topics on my “read next” list, I look forward to coming back and reading this one again.

This is a very good "biology" book on whitetails, detailing their physiology and life history, in laymen's terms, absent serious scientific detail, which can be unnecessarily boring to the layman. When I bought it, I already had 30+ years experience hunting mule and blacktail deer, but limited experience hunting whitetails. So, I was looking for a book that highlighted the differences in the species' habits, particularly reproductive habits. The book fulfilled my expectations completely, I would highly recommend it to inexperienced and experienced hunters alike. In fact I bought personal copies for 2 of my hunting sons and one other hunting partner as soon as I finished reading it. Dr. Rue really knows his stuff!

This book was the best wildlife book I have read. I thought I knew things that simply were inaccurate. I recommend everyone that is serious about deer hunting or conservation read this book.
