Sam Halabi did it again.This is a rare and very informative book on Metro Ethernet developments.It has very clear explanation on all the subjects.I particularly like the VPLS section.One thing tough,the HVPLS section needs to have more coverage on real world scenario.

This an excellent book to get the best knowledge of how Metro Ethernet topology is configured which includes DWDM, ADM, GPLS, MPLS and much more.....great reference and as expected, well written.

This book is very very old. out of date

Sam Halabi's book is described on the cover as "the definitive guide to enterprise and carrier metro Ethernet applications". As you would expect from the author of the justly-celebrated "Internet Routing Architectures", Halabi does a superb job.Chapter 1 reviews traditional TDM ways of getting to the customer. With traditional SDH/SONET-based transmission, carriers pay a high price in operational complexity, cost and provisioning delay. Ethernet's advantages include fast provisioning, fine-grained bandwidth granularity (inherent in packet technologies) and a scalability from kbps to Gbps. The customer also expects a lower cost service, although carrier pricing remains volatile, partially from fear of cannibalising their existing connectivity revenues.Chapter 2 looks at metro Ethernet technologies. Carriers with already deployed SONET/SDH networks naturally consider how to use them efficiently to carry Ethernet. The problem of mapping continuously-scalable packet flows into the lumpy SONET/SDH bandwidth hierarchy is well-described. Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) is becoming an increasingly popular adaptation layer between Ethernet (and other packet protocols such as PPP, Fiber Channel, FICON/ESCON) and SDH/SONET, implemented via the evolution of SONET/SDH devices into Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs). The bandwidth mismatches are addressed via Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS).Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH as just described is a pure transport mechanism. To create an Ethernet analogue of add-drop multiplexing and to support traffic aggregation, L2 switching functionality needs to be added to the basic SDH/SONET box. (This is a well-worn path for transmission vendors - the same model was proposed for ATM). Different customers' Ethernet streams need to be identifiable, and carrier VLAN tagging is a possibility, although MPLS provides a more scalable solution, discussed later.In L2 switching in ring topologies, bandwidth fairness and efficient protection switching is difficult to achieve. The new "Resilient Packet Ring" (RPR) MAC protocol was developed to address these issues, and RPR can be run over GFP, and therefore supported in SONET/SDH devices which understand the RPR protocol. Of course, one can dispense with SONET/SDH equipment altogether (especially if you are a new operator and never installed it). Halabi briefly touches on the deployment and management of Gigabit Ethernet switches with direct interconnect.Chapter 3 is devoted to metro Ethernet services. After a brisk tutorial on L2 switching, MAC learning, flooding, broadcast/multicast, VLANs and spanning tree protocol, Halabi gets down to the services. The Metro Ethernet Forum has defined two Ethernet service types: Ethernet Line Service (ELS) and Ethernet LAN service (E-LAN). Point-to-point vs. multipoint-to-multipoint, or transport vs. transport-and-switching if you prefer. ELS issues include traffic and performance management, class-of-service, VLAN support. Additional issues for E-LAN services focus on mechanisms for customer-separation, address-management and scalability.Halabi identifies a number of issues along the way: with the VLAN tag length restricting operators to 4,096 customer-id values, operational services cannot scale; Ethernet does not have the kind of embedded OA&M facilities which allow carrier services such as SONET/SDH to be monitored and provisioned; the spanning tree protocol for loop-prevention does not scale and is inefficient; VPN configuration is hard to scale.Chapter 4: "hybrid L2 and L3 IP/MPLS networks" unveils the solution. In a nutshell it is to adapt Ethernet to MPLS at the network edge, and use the power of BGP/MPLS VPN technology to scale the service. Halabi starts by reviewing standard L3 VPNs, both IP tunnels (GRE, not IPsec) and BGP/MPLS rfc 2547.He then notes that Ethernet can be carried over MPLS via the IETF Pseudowire standard - this is fine for Ethernet Line Services. An E-LAN service such as Virtual Private LAN Service requires more work from the CE/PE devices, however. Specifically, the CEs think they are talking to an Ethernet switch on their link to the PE. The PE needs the additional functionality of a VLAN switch, and maps a specific MPLS label to each VLAN on a per-customer basis. This "broadcast domain" identification inner label is then augmented by an outer traffic-engineering label to forward traffic to the correct destination PE across the Service Provider network. Halabi describes in detail the mechanisms, which are similar to rfc 2547 VPNs at L3.In practice there are still scaling issues, and the concept of "Decoupled Transparent LAN Service" is introduced. This creates an additional customer-premises PE which specialises in L2 MAC address management and customer segmentation, while the network POP PE can specialise in L3 MPLS tunnel and connectivity management. Given the detailed technical treatment, this is one of the harder chapters in the book. However, this is the last chapter actually devoted to Ethernet.With Chapter 5, we enter part II of the book, which is more focused on traffic engineering and GMPLS. This chapter is a fast review of MPLS for traffic engineering of IP networks. Chapter 6 extends this discussion to cover the details of RSVP-TE for LSP establishment, specifically for fast-reroute. In Chapter 7 and the final Chapter 8, we see how MPLS (specifically GMPLS) can be used as a generalised control plane for virtual circuit management in the SONET/SDH and the optical layers.The Internet is awash with white papers on all aspects of metro Ethernet. This book was published, by Cisco Press, in September 2003 so it's hot off the press. But sections still appear to be slightly dated in what is an incredibly fast-moving area.Why buy it? Because Halabi knows what he's talking about, and gets down into the detail of how everything works with great intellectual clarity. Although it can be hard to see the wood from the trees in this book, it is the ideal "in one place" reference for both services and technologies for carrier Ethernet. I consider chapters 5-8 as an MPLS bonus, as they actually have nothing specifically to do with carrier Ethernet.

I recently read the book titled "Metro Ethernet", authored by the legendary Sam Halabi. ISBN: 158705096X. Let me be the first to say that this title lives up to Mr. Halabi's high standards for delivering top quality information. Sam Halabi does an excellent job of taking away the smoke and mirrors of the often misunderstood world of Metro Ethernet. This book explains, in superb detail, every way to skin the Metro Ethernet cat. The author does it in a way that helps to give the reader a complete understanding of a particular application of Metro Ethernet without dropping the reader off the deep-end of this hybrid technology. The book is organized very well. The author has taken a crawl, walk, run approach to the layout of this book. The introduction alone gives the reader a great road map of the book, so the reader can pinpoint a given topic, rather quickly. In the past I've had to rely heavily on the Index to provide pointers to a given topic, but the Introduction of this book is a great reference. Along with the Authors previous book, "Internet Routing", the author waste little ink. Each topic is clear, concise and to the point. He's taken a lot of information from several sources and compiled the information in an easy to understand text. The illustrations help out a lot with capturing the complexity of the many different Metro Ethernet Architectures. One thing I liked about the book is that the Author gives the reader insight or background as to why a certain application of Metro Ethernet was designed and where it is likely to be applied. This book is best suited for Telco carrier personnel or Enterprise personnel at any level. Companies that are looking for different strategies for their Metro Area Networking requirements will find this title very useful. For Enterprise Customers, this book is a great place to start prior to calling in a consultant or discussing services offered by a service provider. Consultants will likely find this title very valuable to understand the complexities and furthermore gain the ability to transform the complex lingo into something palatable for a non-technical audience/customer. Telco support personnel would benefit a great deal by understanding what their existing offers are or perhaps alternatives to their current offerings. The book is well rounded for a large target audience. A general understanding of the technologies discussed in this book is not really necessary, because the characteristics of the technologies discussed in the book are not implemented in the traditional sense. It does help to have an understanding of the technologies to be able to contrast the difference in the applications of Metro Ethernet. There is a great deal of information that covers the use of MPLS in conjunction with Metro Ethernet. The sections covering MPLS get a little more technical and may lose some individuals that are not technically savvy, however the concepts are clearly stated. There is another title that covers information about Metro Ethernet technology offered by Cisco Press titled "Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" by Dave Warren, Dennis Hartmann. Since Metro Ethernet is one of many technologies covered in this title, it doesn't have as much to offer on the subject of Metro Ethernet as the title "Metro Ethernet" by Sam Halabi. The chapters in the title "Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO)" covering Metro Ethernet, focuses more on implementation details and the configuration of Metro Ethernet in Cisco equipment. If your looking for detailed information about Metro Ethernet, I would recommend the book "Metro Ethernet" by Sam Halabi. This is one reader that is thankful Sam Halabi chose to write another book.

This is a fantastic overview if this is your first contact with the metro ethernet. However, it may be not enough for techies willing to find an in depth description of the protocols involved. Moreover, it forgets some outstanding proposals in Layer 2 point-to-point transport over MPLS networks, like the ones from Kireeti Kompella, even though it comprises Kompella's BGP approach to VPLS. In a nutshell, if you don't know almost anything about metro ethernet, this is a 'must have' book.

I have read thousands of books but never read one that ended pretty much half into a scene and just dropped the story with the comment that they would write more later to continue where they just dropped the story as if they ran out of words. I have read a lot of books by one of the two authors and never have I seen her end a book in such a manner. I guess I have to find some new authors which won't leave us hanging like this.

Jason and Zayn. Wow, what a heartbreaking but beautifully written story. These two young men couldn't be more alike but completely different at the same time. Jason is the son of a Pastor. He has a big family and is being raised in a strict religious home. His innocence of the world is alarming but really what did any of us know. Zayn is the son of a single alcoholic mother. He is being home schooled because he seems to have anger management issues. No one understands the child who won't speak out against the only life they know. Zayn just knows he has to take care of his Mom and keep it to himself. These two beautiful young men meet at a time in their lives when they desperately need someone who understands. Sara York is a must buy author for me. This is the first Alexis King story for me. I have already bought the follow up book: IS THERE MORE. Can't wait to start reading it. This book was magnificently written and this was a beautiful author collaboration. Well done ladies, well done!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!

What a stupid book! Never finished anything, leaves story hang with no segue and then the end is "to be continued!!!!WTF! WASTE OF MONEY!

Never done a review before and respected Sara York but feel chated here. Damn. only half a story and no idea when the end will come.

Love is so easy. Why must the world work so diligently to destroy it? These are the pressures of teenage angst explored beautifully in Sara's writing. The characters move into the chambers of your heart and you swear you invited and welcomed them.

An intense and fascinating young adult story about acceptance, finding the courage to be yourself, and the right to love who you want. The story can be divided into three parts. The first part is told from Jason’s POV. He is raised in a strict religious family, and homosexuality is considered a sin. Growing up is never easy, but with the way his parents rule the family (not only Jason but also his siblings) it is merely impossible. And yet he manages to stay himself. The more his parents shorten the leash, the more he questions all he was raised to believe in. Being gay can’t be wrong as it feels so right.In the second part, we learn about Zayn, who is raised by a single mother. He suffers from the neglect by his alcoholic mother and rebels in every school he attends.In the third part, the boys meet at Bible camp to be “fixed.” It is harsh and brutal, but they find their kindred spirit with each other.The story gives a very good insight into the lives and minds of two teenage boys. They struggle with all the things teenagers go through when growing up. Added to that is that they are both gay, but too afraid to tell anyone. They are being bullied at school, but also at home. But despite all the ganging up on them, these boys manage to survive and stay strong in their beliefs.It is written in a straightforward and to-the-point style. At times, it was difficult to read. How on earth are these things possible? How can someone, how can parents, act as in this book? But sadly, these people exist.Fair warning. This book ends on a cliffhanger.

To me this book was almost a young adult romance. Jason and Zayn are two teenaged boys who are discovering who they are and what they want. In the process they are both sent to a conversion camp where they meet and begin a relationship. Yes it ends in the middle of the story and its a cliffhanger, so I'm gonna have to read book 2 to see where it goes.

As a gay man, I can say this book was a little hard to read as it echoes similar things to my life growing up. However, it's a great story of two kids finding out who they are. I enjoyed the book very much and looking forward to the next book.

Perfect...I have shared this beautiful, fun book with many of my girlfriends ( bought over 15 copies ) I think most people would love to looks through this beautifully photographed blossoming book and read about their own flower fortune and then all of their friends B-day.I have bought many more of these books over the years!! Oh so fun to share and give to others. Extremely happy with the photos by Ron Van Dongen and they say text (assuming that means the fortune sayings) by Billie Lythberg & Sian Northfield) a wonderfully prefect combination for a gift book/coffee table addition..., just wanted to update this review because it's a true favorite of mine and I am buying more :)

This is the perfect coffee table book for anyone who loves flowers. The photos are absolutely beautiful and I had no idea there were so many flowers out there that I had never heard of. Each day of the year is represented by a flower and a little description of the personality of those born on that date. It's just harmless fun. I actually bought 2 of the books. We'll worth the money.

I have gifted so many copies of this book. It is a "hit" yet again. I hope my friend will also derive many hours of pleasure sharing it with her friends.

Good book for people with no ides of how to use Alexa products, but the information for the user that has some hands on experience is not what i was hoping for. I really wanted information about the "not so obvious" things, like, how to stop an alarm when it goes off, how to "snooze" an alarm, how to set an alarm for every weekday except thursdays (can't do it, have to set an alarm for each day), how to have the alarm use music instead of the preinstalled sounds. Little things, i know, but this book doesn't go that deep into the little things that can be aggravating.

Amazon Echo Spot is a good, informative, quick read that is packed with a good deal of information.I appreciate the author's ability to communicate his points without excessive verbiage (which I, myself, am frequently guilty of).By the way, although we both are Andersons, we are in no way related and have never met --- just in case folks are curious.One point in which I could not find the answer in this book, although I did read it twice in search of my question, is this: If I set it in a room to observe the kids (or if I'm using it as a security camera to view my home while I am on the road, can I view the scenes using my iPad, iPhone or other device?I'm presuming I can, so, due to my understanding of the differences between Spot and Show, based on what I learned with this book, I have decided to purchase the Echo Spot immediately upon finishing this review.BOTTOM LINEI am rating this at four stars, but could almost rate it higher. Because I am still in the research mode, I have purchased a few other books on the topic, but this is the first of them I have read.Did I address all the features of importance to you? This is a really cool device. Makes a good looking clock sitting on my desk. Now if I could only figure out what to do with it. I think it will take some effort to poke around... try things in order to identify a use. I like it though.

This echo device gives you the practice side and the fun side of home smartness.Being a pretty visually oriented person, I couldn’t help but feel something missing from my Echo Dot and Echo Plus although quite pleased with both.The Spot serves as a clock radio and I have linked it to my Blink cameras so as a request I can see any camera with my Spot.I have purchased 3 more for my family so we can easily video chat occasionally and a practical clock when not!

I recall an English teacher who once told her students that they had to read at least fifty pages in any book before deciding whether it was worth reading. Well, it took fifty pages for me to get past the boredom of the first two chapters where I read one promise after another of what was coming in some future chapter. However, to give credit where credit is due, by page 60 I began to find some meaningful content in this book and from that point on I found it useful. The book is titled "XML for Dummies" and "A Reference for the Rest of Us" and I think that fairly well describes it. If your looking for a lot of in depth XML exposure, this book isn't for you. If you already know something about mark up language (e.g. HTML) and you want to learn something about how XML and HTML can be married and from that foundation move on to a better understanding of XML then this book will probably be just fine.It's a bargain, in terms of price, and IMO it's certainly worth the price; even if you only use it as a reference source.

XML For Dummies is a good beginning reference for an ideal beginner for XML (eXtensible Markup Language). A starter will definitely appreciate this widely heralded successor to HTML and it will provide a lot of information about this powerful and flexible language that is used to format complex data for the Web. The CD ROM is definitely a great bonus.

This cook book pleasantly surprised me. I had no idea eggs could be the star ingredient in so many amazing mouthwatering dishes. I found these authors approach to the topic of eggs very efficient. They start with sharing All About Eggs. I found this most helpful because buying eggs has become as complicated as buying milk. There are so many kinds. Often times I don’t understand the labels on the egg containers. These authors help readers realize the difference between AA – A – B – Peewee – Small – Med – etc. and other information on the box.I appreciated the section on Decoding Egg Cartons too! Again great job of informing the reader to the difference between Cage-Free. Free Range and other terms. Then the two page beautiful color spread of the several different types of eggs used in cooking. All the way from Quail, to Ostrich and everything in-between.I found the Anatomy of an Egg section most fascinating. I didn’t know an egg had so many parts! Grin! Then the authors start with cooking Techniques under the section titled Eggs 101 Basics and how to handle and store eggs – great stuff.Then the recipes start with Sauces and Condiments section. I’d love to try to make my own Mayo, Egg Butter and Hollandaise Sauce. The next section is Pasta Dough and then a chapter on Breads. I’d like to try the Brioche Buns, Challah and Soft Pretzels, they looked yummy. Next section was Morning recipes. Oh, I think I want to try them all. But top on the list are the Egg Clouds, Eggs Benedict, 9 different types of quiche; 9 different kinds of pancakes and 9 different Freitas recipes. Then there are Snacks. Some of my top favorites to try are Corn and Green Onion Fritters with Bacon-Honey Drizzle; Parmesan Popcorn Puffs and 9 different kinds of Deviled eggs.The Afternoon section has some yummy soups and salads with 9 different egg salads recipes. Then the Night chapter. There are a few I want to try, Croque-Madome – Shrimp OkonomiYaki (Omelet Pancake) Spaetzle with Swedish Meatballs – Savory Strata.Last but not least are the Sweets. I’d like to try Spicy Chocloate Mousse, Vanilla Bean Semi Freddo Bars – Crème Brulee, Peaches “N”Cream Cake, Grape Fruit – Poppy Seed Pound Cake and 9 different Frozen Custards, and Chocolate-Orange Souffle.This is a beautiful hardback book with lovely color pictures for many of the recipes listed. Each recipe has ingredients that are easy to find and instructions that are simple to follow. The authors do list the servicing size on the top of the recipe but they don’t list the prep time. The reader can easily locate the cooking time at the end of the recipe; along with tips to make the recipe easier to make and things to watch out for.I highly recommend this lovely, versatile cook book every kitchen should have. It starts with the basics and builds the info up preparing the reader to make the first recipes in the book. This will be my go to book for healthy, easy meals (some you can make ahead) for my family. I was excited to receive the book, having had it pre-ordered at the urging of my SO. I dove into the book when I received it. The shrimp okonomiyaki pictures reminded me of a trip to Japan. The salade lyonnaise reminded me of so many things topped with a fried or a poached egg that I wanted to try making.I had two dozen eggs in the fridge and a number of ingredients ready to go when the weekend rolled around and I would have time to prepare the foods.The photographs in the book are stunningly beautiful. The creative team has clearly put a lot of effort into the preparation of the food and the making of the photographs in the book. I appreciate the many recipes that include multiple variations like buttermilk pancakes, quiche, frittata, deviled eggs, and others.What I didn't like in the book:-Tiny font in the ingredient lists. More than once I needed to pull the book up close to my face or lean in really close to read the small numbers in the fractions listed in the ingredients. There's lots of white space on the pages, surely some of it could be sacrificed to use a larger font?-Spelling errors. There's a number of them, and they're not simply homophones that would be missed by a spell checker. ("Ingridients", page 119 as an example)-Recipe that just doesn't work as written. The Spaetzle With Swedish Meatballs was what sold my SO on the book. It was the "I gotta have it" factor of the book. I found two serious errors in the recipe. 1: The meatball recipe calls for "Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the soaked bread with any milk remaining in the bowl. Stir in the beef, turkey, egg, salt, and pepper, mixing gently to combine the ingredients thoroughly without overworking them."If followed literally, you add the pomade, the measured ingredients, the beef, and the turkey to the aromatics that are still in the HOT SKILLET, which would somewhat brown the meat and lead to bad meatballs. Luckily I figured it out later when the instructions said "Cover the bowl and refrigerate the meatball mixture for at least 30 minutes." The aromatics get added to the pomade in the bowl, not the pomade in the bowl being added to the skillet.2: Did the writer actually try to make spaetzle without a spaetzle maker and press the dough through a colander? I don't have any better way to say that this will lead to frustration and tears. I ended up with a layer of dough that cooked itself to the bottom of the colander while I tried to push it through colander with a spatula, then a bench scraper.That did not work. I ended up pitching the dough and boiling a bag of noodles I had on hand. The meatballs and sauce were delicious. The spaetzle was a failure.I'm looking forward to going back to the book in the future for the brioche buns, the egg bhurji, and the avgolemono soup. But that will have to wait for another weekend.

I was looking for a book that had recipes that celebrated eggs as the main ingredient. This book has some recipes that do that, but most of the recipes just used eggs IN the ingredients or as an accessory (like a salad with an egg).One thing that has been useful is the salad dressing recipes. They're great!

I really wanted to love this book, I have had it on my wish list for what seems like ages. Finally purchased it and am not so excited about it. Most of the recipes are Korean-food influenced, which is fine, but not what I was expecting. I tend to have a difficult time finding ingredients required for most Asian food so I'm sure I'm going to be running into the same problem. Also, the recipes are extremely labor-intensive it seems. I know good food usually takes time, but I don't think any of the recipes I could ever serve for breakfast because I'd have to get up in the middle of the night to start making them. Aside from pancakes and the Dutch Baby and I already make those for breakfast. So, I can't say I'd recommend the book but the food does look delicious and sooner or later I might put it to use.

Good info, fun and delicious recipes, but way more Asian influence than advertised. Hard to find and afford the ingredients.

This book is perfect for any egg lover. The recipes are doable, Ranges from slightly time-consuming to not too complicated. Some recipes like the hollandaise sauce will need to be tried over again to perfect. I love this book.

Good guide to obscure & interesting new recipes but a bit lacking on basic cooking techniques for cooking eggs.

This contains wonderful recipes from around the world, as well as fabulous photos. Contains easy to more time consuming recipes.
