He recently released "The Gentleman's Guide to Duelling" (2014) and Donald McBane's classic martial arts treatise, "The Expert Swordsman's Companion" (2017). PAUL MACDONALD was raised in the West Highland village of Glenuig, Moidart, Scotland. He is the founder and past president of the Dawn Duellists Society and the British Federation for Historical Swordplay (BFHS). Since 1994, Maestro Macdonald has dedicated his path to European arms and martial arts, reviving the methods and techniques of several lost systems, such as the duelling shield, spada in arme, dusack and backsword. In 1998 he established Macdonald Armouries, where he continues to make hand-crafted swords and knives. He received his Master-at-Arms certification from the Italian Federation for Ancient and Historical Fencing (FISAS) in 1999 and established the Macdonald Academy of Arms in 2001. During the last decade, he founded the Commando D Living History Group, and established the Conflicts of Interest battlefield archaeology group. He also continues to serve as a British Army Reservist. BEN MILLER is an American filmmaker and author. For the last thirteen years, Miller has studied fencing at the Martinez Academy of Arms, one of the last places in the world still teaching an authentic living tradition of classical fencing, where he has served as the Academy's chef de salle. He is the author of "Irish Swordsmanship: Fencing and Dueling in Eighteenth Century Ireland" (New York: Hudson Society Press, 2017), the editor of Colonel Thomas Monstery's "Self-Defense for Gentlemen and Ladies: A Nineteenth-Century Treatise on Boxing, Kicking, Grappling, and Fencing with the Cane and Quarterstaff" (2015), and wrote the foreword to the republication of Donald McBane's "The Expert Sword-Man's Companion" (2017).

Really enjoyed learning more about the lives, tactics, and strategies of various Highlanders and their works. The first treatise is quite dense but full of useful information if you wanted to know more about how Highlanders fought in formations and their tactics. Later texts cover a fencing dictionary of the 18th century, an advanced course of historical fencing instruction in broadsword, spadroon, and smallsword, a cavalry text, and some research on the life of Donald McAlpine who taught backsword during the American Revolution.Plenty here for the scholar looking for some first time publishing info and for the historical fencer wanting to learn more about the period that the treatises they study was like.

Fantastic collection of Scottish legends and period fencing literature. Highly recommended for any student in the art of defense. The British soldier's account of the Highlander's battle tactics sheds new light on the martial arts of the Highland clansmen, and is a valuable addition to the historical records!

One of the better text books I have seen- it does not put me to sleep, and is informative. The book is organized by arbopathogen rather than vector. It does focus on the vectorial aspects of disease transmission and pathogen life cycle. The writing is not so clinical that non-physicians can't understand what is being discussed. All in all, this is a good book to add to a personal research library.

I found this book useful. It contains a lot of information on arthropods of medical importance and is detailed on each aspect. It is divided into sizeable sections relating to e.g. specific diseases and I found it a bit wordy and took a little time to negotiate to the information I required. It contains some good diagrams and references to other sources.

About the Author

David Coggins is the author and illustrator of the travel memoir, The Nostalgic Heart, recipient of an Independent Publisher Book Award. His eight-volume set of daybooks, published under the pseudonym Robert Carolina, is in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. His artwork has been exhibited in Paris, London, and Santiago, Chile as well as in U.S. galleries and museums. Coggins has designed for a number of U.S. theaters including Théâtre de la Jeune Lune, Guthrie Theater, and La Jolla Theater. His set for "The Deception" was chosen for "From the Edge," a U.S. exhibition on performance design that toured New York, Prague, and Moscow. He lives in Minneapolis.

From tidbits about the Eiffel tower to strolls along the Jardin du Luxembourg, you will be transported into an artist and his family's delightful experiences in Paris. Although I have been to Paris several times, I now have a new list of amusements to discover on the next trip, including a handful of restaurants and little known adventures. What an enjoyable way to read about Paris and what to do while you're there; where to eat. I had never heard of this author but I enjoyed his casual writing style and his watercolor paintings interspersed throughout the book.A delightful book!

The author is a friend of mine and his musings about his trips to Paris made me smile wide, as I know each of his children and that helped me visualize. David Coggins is a modern day renaissance man. A true artist. This Stratton loves this book.

This charming diary of sorts with it's illustrations is like keepingParis in your pocket....and shows that the city is personal to allespecially in its smallest of details..That is it's mystery and heart.

About the Author

Kat Cho used to hide books under the bathroom sink and then sneak in there to read after bedtime. Her parents pretended not to know. This helped when she decided to write a dinosaur time-travel novel at the tender age of nine. Sadly, that book was not published.
