Arthur C. Brooks is President of the American Enterprise Institute, a public policy think tank in Washington, DC. He is the author of nine books, including The Battle, Gross National Happiness, and Who Really Cares. Until 2009, Brooks was the Louis A. Previously, Brooks spent twelve years as a professional French hornist with the City Orchestra of Barcelona and other ensembles. It couldn't be more clear: if Americans behave like mature adults, things will get better.In an easy-to-read 174 pages (plus notes and index), Arthur Brooks calmly lays out the moral and economic case for limited government, thoughtful taxation, and true neighborliness. He is president of the American Enterprise Institute, so he brings some conservative spice to our current economic pickle.Brooks lays out the facts, with well-researched examples to prove his points. He finishes up with some reasonable policy proposals straight out of the Free Marketer's handbook, such as means-testing for Social Security or lower taxes on investments.This book is non-partisan in a good sense, namely that it shows how we've all--left and right alike--stood by as our culture dissolved around us. His advice, if followed, would make life better for people, and would also make us better people. And this last point is the key to the book, namely that economics is not just anothersocial science, it is a moral enterprise.Like a medieval apologist, Brooks defends the faith. In fact, he follows the general form of inquiry used by Thomas Aquinas and other defenders of the faith: begin with a list of objections, state the principle(s) involved, then answer the objections. A reasonable opponent of free markets might argue that such trade arrangements areat best amoral and very often immoral. Further, free markets are unfair. Finally, Good Samaritans have to clean up the wreckage caused by free markets.Brooks contends that Earned Success is the main driver of true human happiness. The sad fates of many lottery winners demonstrates this point: we value what we earn more highly than we value a random gift. And the effort it takes to earn something makes us better, doesn't it? A properly-regulated free market, therefore, is fairer than a managed one, and it produces the wealth that Good Samaritans use. Thus the objections are countered effectively, and the case for free enterprise is made. Good work.Unfortunately, this book will not get a serious public policy hearing anytime soon, and that's the problem with Brooks' approach. The best way to argue against the downward fiscal spiral we're in is calmly and reasonably,as Brooks does. Paul Ryan tried that method in the Vice Presidential debate late last fall, and was ridiculed by Vice President Biden, though Joe offered no coherent message of his own. That, sadly, is the state of the debate in 2013.Like the patient who won't listen to the doctor, we've decided things are just fine the way they are.So, read this book and put it away where you can find it in a few years, when the next bubble bursts. At that point, Arthur Brooks will look like a prophet. Perhaps, if we're lucky, the patient won't be so sick at that point that the cure will mean years of pain.

The first several chapters where the author argues why people are better off free is quite good, if a bit short.Once he gets into his recommendations for where the government should be involved are rather poor.It seems to me, a libertarian, that this book should be very well liked by conservative readers.If you are a democrat or independent and you are interested in why republicans think the way they do, then I suggest reading this book to understand why people are better off with less government. Even if you disagree, you will find value in this book.If you are a libertarian, then understand that his argument is that righties should be making a moral case for freedom, not a case based solely on facts and statistics.

Brooks effectively makes the case that Free Enterprise is the "moral high ground" vs. a society in which government plays a larger and larger role. I strongly recommend this to people who want a constructive message to share with those who judge success as "unfair."

It is always gratifying to read a book whose ideas mirror perfectly one's own. I am worried about the direction our country has taken, particularly in the last three years, and want to know what I can do to alter the course of events. Unfortunately, most people who will read this book from cover to cover are already on board the free enterprise train. The author states early on that this is not about who's in the White House or even about the outcome of future elections, since most of our problems are bipartisan in nature. Presenting a moral argument in favor of free enterprise is a good thing, but I question how many of those who think big governement is the answer are interested in listening.

The computer programming conferences I go to are full of thinly copied examples from this book.I walked away with a better understanding of how to have a conversation with a person and figure out the symbols they would understand, and how to quickly produce a variety of sketches using that symbol language, so we can talk about a web site and imagine in vivid detail what it is like to use it without having to build it first. Lots of drawings and clever visual tricks using computer monitors or junk.This is not a book on where to put the navigation on a web site so that users can find it. In that sense, it is not the UX book I wanted. It is more about how to think through and test a variety of ideas about a web site so you can arrive at a design a user loves before you start coding.The recommendation on the UW senior level UX Design class is to read this book and do 5 sketches a week of a web page or product. Improve existing ones or sketch new imaginary products.That is a valuable exercise with a good book. My work has improved because I read this and did plenty of sketches. Worth every penny.

I bought this book because it was recommended by Andy Rutledge in hispodcast "Design View". I knew it wouldn't be bad given the nature ofthe podcast and the host but I really wasn't sure what to expecteither. With no expectations or biases I started reading and laterfound out that it was the ideal way to experience this title.If had expected a practical book with a more hands-on approach on userinterface design, I would have been disappointed. The book discussesprimarily on how we should do design rather than explaining how todesign any particular things. Bill Buxton also writes about the roleof the user experience design and the designer itself in today'sbusinesses. The best thing in the book is that the content is full ofinteresting stories and rich examples of user experience design inreal life. The text moves from stories to theory to examples and backagain keeping the reader hooked even when the subject at hand might bea bit too heavy to digest on the first reading. Everything is wellwritten and the author more than "knows his stuff". The examples comewith extraordinary pictures that are a great source for inspiration.The book is also a good reference of other books about the subject.If you are looking for a hands-on guide or a text-book to userexperience/ interface design this not your pick. Also it is not a bookfor usability enthusiasts or engineers either. Sketching UserExperiences is a book for those designers and would-be designers whowant to get new ideas and perspective on their profession and thedesign business itself.At least I am sure that I'll be sketching more in the future thanbefore reading this book...

This is a compelling book. It manages to blend business, organizational and design thinking on the user experience. In doing this, Bill Buxton makes the case for (i) the centrality of design in driving business value and (ii) the importance of investing in the design process. The importance of exploration and play in design is called out, and the role of making multiple light, inexpensive sketches of alternatives as an important part of the design process. Buxton also brings together the separate histories of the industrial design (the people who make things) and the software design worlds, sprinkling in some lessons from film making for good measure. And he reinforces the importance of knowing the traditions and their high points if you want to innovate. All of these lessons are vital to our collective future.I liked this book enough to buy copies for people on my design and business teams, and I will probably give my copy to my boss. I may get a copy for my son as well, who is involved in furniture design in Vancouver.The book does have a couple of weaknesses. The most serious is that Bill seems to think that people don't sketch in code. I am pretty sure that this is not what he thinks - he has seen plenty of people sketch in code and most of the code created by university researchers is a form of sketch - branching code that explores, plays and demonstrates possibilities. The book can also be read as advocating a waterfall process rather than something more agile. One reason may be that he is focused on the design of interactive objects and environments where there are high production costs. But this kind of waterfall approach is not all that useful for people (such as myself) who are building businesses around the delivery of software as a service. And taking Bill's own advice, and looking out a few years, it seems likely that most of us will have 3D printers in our homes and that eventually these 3D printers will be able to print 3D programmable objects. With shape memory plastics and other such smart materials, one of the things with behaviours (interactions) may even be the shape itself.Still an important book, and one that points to more thinking and more learning. The gallery of important user experience sketches is worth deep study.

Not a bad book, but I would not rate it as among Hibbert's best efforts. I did learn some things I had not known about the Peninsular Wars and about the Rifle Brigade.

I read this wonderful little book, first published in 1961, in preparation for a forthcoming visit to northwest Spain to follow Sir John Moore's retreat to Corunna. Hibbert is an author for whom I have a great regard and this early work clearly demonstrates not only his sturdy research but also his elegiac and polished prose. In such a short book, long descriptions and deep discussion of tactics are not possible. However, he explains to the reader who may not be familiar with this episode of British military history exactly how the retreat came about whilst sketching the personalities, foibles and strengths of the major characters of the campaign.The generals such as Moore, Napier, Paget, Craufurd and so on are not the only people we learn about because Hibbert draws on memoirs and other materials written by the junior officers and the enlisted men such as the famous Rifleman Harris of the 95th. There are little vignettes such as the dumping of silver money to lighten the load, high up in the frozen Cantabrian Mountains, women giving birth at the side the road in the mud and rain and the hooves of the horses and mules bleeding as they struggled to haul artillery pieces.A truly beautiful and unforgettable early book by this brilliant historian. A moving, sad and poignant story which still causes debate today. Very highly recommended

While compilers for high-level programming languages are large complex software systems, they have particular characteristics that differentiate them from other software systems. Their functionality is almost completely well-defined – ideally there exist complete precise descriptions of the source and target languages, while additional descriptions of the interfaces to the operating system, programming system and programming environment, and to other compilers and libraries are often available. The implementation of application systems directly in machine language is both difficult and error-prone, leading to programs that become obsolete as quickly as the computers for which they were developed. With the development of higher-level machine-independent programming languages came the need to offer compilers that were able to translate programs into machine language. Given this basic challenge, the different subtasks of compilation have been the subject of intensive research since the 1950s. This book is not intended to be a cookbook for compilers, instead the authors' presentation reflects the special characteristics of compiler design, especially the existence of precise specifications of the subtasks. They invest effort to understand these precisely and to provide adequate concepts for their systematic treatment. This is the first book in a multivolume set, and here the authors describe what a compiler does, i.e., what correspondence it establishes between a source and a target program. To achieve this the authors specify a suitable virtual machine (abstract machine) and exactly describe the compilation of programs of each source language into the language of the associated virtual machine for an imperative, functional, logic and object-oriented programming language. This book is intended for students of computer science. Knowledge of at least one imperative programming language is assumed, while for the chapters on the translation of functional and logic programming languages it would be helpful to know a modern functional language and Prolog. The book is supported throughout with examples, exercises and program fragments.

I've skimmed all the chapters and currently going through the first chapter in detail to implement the specified virtual machine. All the components of the virtual machine are explained in detail and there are plenty of examples to help along with the implementation. One thing I would have liked to have been spelled out more clearly is the exact specification of the subset of C that the virtual machine is designed for. As it stands you have to go through the chapter, look at the examples and tease out the grammar yourself. Then again the goal of the book isn't compiling a subset of C to the specified virtual machine instruction set so I'm being a bit more critical than necessary.Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand some of the underlying theory of programming languages in order to implement them with the help of virtual machines.
