This is a very insightful read. Dr. Kevin Leman describes the reasons why first borns often suffer from the insurmountable pressure of being born first. He gives the reason for their tenacity, excellence, dominant characteristics, successes and failures, etc. This volume is a great read for not only those who are first borns, but also for people who are interested in learning more about their first born friend, parent, boss, co-worker, relative, spouse, etc.Dr. Leman not only shows the reasons behind first born temperaments, but he also gives practical insight on how to properly manage the pressure and responsiblity first borns face. This is a must read for first borns or people married to a first born. It is also a great read for those involved in counseling or psychology. I highly recommend it.

This audio cd is right on target. Dr. Leman, as usual, does an excellent job in pinpointing the myriad advantages of being the first born in the family. It is true that first borns which include us onlies are more mature, conscientious, and goal oriented than later born children.Dr. Leman is an excellent theorist and practician regarding birth order typology. However, I learned something new about the psychology of the first born-there are people with first born and/or only child characteristics although they were not technically the first borns in their respective families.I am an only and my mother is a first born. My mother was a typical first born-she loved being in charge and believed that she was always right. As a first born, she was often in conflict with superior staff because she believed that she knew more than they did. Even though we are close, we often clashed because of our strong personalities. I, too, believe that I am right and always gloat about it. I am also fiercely ambitious and believe in achieving the highest and if not, I would be miserable. The Firstborn Advantage is an excellent read and/or a good listen. It can be purchased in either book or cd form. Please purchase this enlightening treatise on the first born experience.

As I read through this book I kept thinking "Who is this man and how does he know me so well?"!If you are a firstborn you will find this book very enlightening. Dr. Leman has made birth order an area of research and study and he proves to be most knowledgeable on the subject. Although he refers to other birth orders in this book it is primarily focused on firstborns and their relationships with other birth orders and the world.Parents who read this book (preferably early in your parenting experience) will find it helpful as you relate to your firstborn and subsequent children. In addition to seeing myself with a new understanding I also found it enlightening in my understanding of my own (now adult) firstborn child.Dr. Leman has written an interesting book that does not bog down, it will keep you turning the pages as he explores how the firstborn child can develop their "edge" in school, work and home situations.

While Dr. Leman is persuasive, he wasn't persuasive enough. I know plenty of firstborns with all the personality traits of what he calls the firstborn that were late talkers, late walkers, late __. I'm not sure I buy that every single first born walks by 12 months, talks like a 4 year old at age 2, and is an overachiever in every area. I think Dr. Leman stereotypes "firstborns" (whether by birth order or his way of looking at first born) in a way that is unfair to a true firstborn that just may be a late developer. I think it's helpful to read the book for a broader scope of knowledge, but I would remain skeptical of jumping in hook, line, and sinker.

This book is not for the casual layman. There is a lot of technical biological, psychological, and linguistic terminology. I don't think this book is easily read by someone without a decent education in at least one of these areas. The author is, without a doubt, very educated in human develop and language theories. He doesn't need to constantly cite erudite research and pointless texts to make a point. His prose is quite captivating and helps the reader become enamored with his way of thinking.The major theme of this book is: our traditional way of looking at the mind-language relationship is not necessarily true. The author talks about how this book was written from his experiences giving a talk at his child's school during career day. He is asked whether animals have a simple language and admitted that he didn't know how to answer the kid's question. His book probes into that idea. What is the difference between animals and humans in language ability? How come apes can develop some symbolic manipulation, and yet cannot maintain it? Why is it that a young ape learns language at a much quicker rate? These questions are posed in the beginning of the book. He then moves on to intelligence and human brain encephalization, as well as brain size and the ratio between brain and body. The section on intelligence and the brain brought up a lot of complex ideas behind intelligence. Why does a rat, whose brain/body ratio is quite high, not have the same intelligence as a human? And why do humans have a higher brain/body ratio than elephants? Such questions reach the corner of evolutionary, epistemological, and psychological thought.I'm still in the middle of the book. Best Explanation of Evolution of LanguageTwo puzzles in the evolution of language are explained by Terence Deacon in The Symbolic Species (1997). Why does symbolic communication seem easy for humans yet almost impossible for other animals? And how and why did language develop in its original milieu of small hunter-gatherer bands? Deacon believes the brain tripled in size because it co-evolved with language for the sake of symbolic communication.Deacon’s section on language raises a puzzle: why do no animals use a simple language? Animals don’t have language because even a simple language requires the use of symbols, one word (or gesture) standing for another. Symbols seem easy for humans but are extremely difficult for other animals. Deacon then describes the enormous complexities of the human brain. But this leads to the other puzzle: how and why did this complex brain evolve in its original hunter-gatherer milieu?Deacon’s answer is that language co-evolved with the human brain specifically to foster symbolic communication. And symbolic communication was caused by the unique challenges of a bipedal lifestyle, especially sexual selection. Bipedalism forced hominids to live in cooperative groups for scavenging, hunting and defense against predators. Meat from large prey had to be shared, but sharing food does not come easily to any animal. And life on the ground in a multi-male multi-female group was very different from life in the trees. This new lifestyle caused physical changes, such as the loss of estrus, loss of hair, face-to-face intercourse, and female orgasm. It also created other challenges. Who mates with whom? Who rears and protects children? What dominance hierarchies will exist, if any? Deacon points out three consistent facts about human reproduction today: 1) both males and females usually assist in child-rearing; 2) a great majority of adults are pair-bonded to a member of the opposite sex; 3) these exclusive sexual relationships are maintained within a multi-male and multi-female social group. However, this social structure was unprecedented. It required new behaviors and better methods of communication. For pair-bonded adults, the selection of the fittest partner for an extended relationship of child-raising became critical for genetic success and encouraged more sharing of information about potential partners. Meat-sharing required reciprocity and the remembering of the past behavior of individuals to detect and control cheaters. These new communication needs for information about individuals were created by bipedalism and led to a new mode of communication by symbols, i.e., language.Deacon offers convincing explanations of these two puzzles in the evolution of language.

And all of this contributes toward the construction of the "interpretant filter" through which all mediation begins. The presentation is very systematic, risk -taking, multi-dimensional, and responsible. You'll be able to put together an excellent organized picture of the entire enterprise with this well-thought-out presentation. You'll take tons of notes to keep up, but it's worth it. I think he plugs in well with ramachandran and his IPL. Language loop. They compliment each other. I recommend this book as equally as strong as ramachandran - that's saying something. Accurate to a degree... However, not every N disappears for weeks on end or changes their phone number. I was involved for seven years, four of which were as a married couple with a child together. My N did do many of the behaviors the author describes, but honestly, had I caught my man in the act or had him disappear for weeks on end I would have caught on immediately. My N is what is consideted as a covert narc, and therefore much more difficult to unmask. I liked this book for its candidness, but it didnt touch on the SPECTRUM of NPD, and how there are many different degrees, levels, and behaviors that can be seen in these people. My own N was as cold and callous as they get, but used stonewalling and physical abuse, as well as a claim of having been diagnosed with PTSD, as his reason for the atrocious acts he committed.Bottom line: There are many forms and variations of NPD, and that mine didnt portray the long absences or constant phone number changes does not mean he was not on the NPD spectrum. It just means he was a different level on the spectrum. So I think its important that readers understand this is only one of many examples of what NPD can look like. It doesnt have to be obvious to be true.

As a psychotherapist, I did not expect this to be a wide range assessment of narcissism, however, I felt it was more of a personal biography that narrowed the circumstances down to just a single experience. This does not offer a broad range that would allow the person involved with the narcissist to consider sociopathy or another Cluster B personality disorder. There are also many types of narcissists-and they behave quite differently. Many are covert, and that can include some truly hidden behaviors that are never discovered and do not include overt anger and such obvious actions. A cerebral narcissist behaves one way, while a somatic narcissist another. It isn't so much that love is a "lie", but that the narcissist only cares about weaving a mask that deceives and hides their true motives. It is a good idea to examine love-bombing, discarding, ghosting, hoovering, flying monkeys, grey rocking and the many other terms that can help the person involved apply some structure to the situation so they can not only get out-but can see their own repeating patterns and heal them. After all, there is something intoxicating about the love-bombing that creates such an elation (almost like a drug) and that needs to be recognized and healed.

I just got out of a horrible relationship with a sociopath. I have scoured the Internet reading everything I can...this book is DEAD ON and has touched on aspects of my former relationship that I never even realized anybody else would comprehended. If that makes sense. I have not been able to relate to anyone, no one has a clue what I just went through. This book has made me feel welcomed and strong and I finally feel like I have the upper hand with all of this knowledge. It has significantly improved my perspective and my heartbreak. This has a lot of good insight.I can't help thinking, though, that it would be better, more useful, and funner if it was written as something that you could simply read or share with family, rather than essentially a "teacher's guide" for parents.I feel like I read it and think, "yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right" but then I forget to actually convey the ideas/info to my kids.

The Greek text is accompanied by footnotes providing textual variations and there are also extensive notes from the translator discussing points of interest, including the relationship between the text and known history or conflicts with other contemporary accounts. The books that comprise this volume (18-19) are of particular interest to students of the New Testament. Josephus discusses among other things the various religious groups in Palestine at the time (Essenes, Sadducees, etc.), the machinations of the Herodian family and their interrelationships (it is from Josephus that we learn the name Salome, misapplied throughout history to the daughter who dances for Herod in Mark), and the career of Pilate. Book 18 also contains the so-called Testamentum Flavianum attesting to the historical existence of Christ as well as the equally contentious passage concerning John the Baptist. One cannot help agreeing with the scholars who argue that Luke borrowed from Josephus in constructing his biography of Jesus. When we read Josephus therefore, we may be reading the very same material that the authors of the gospels were inspired by as they wove their narratives.
